I have one complaint about Zach Martin

Martin needs a killer instinct

The rookie is fantastic, but I do have one complaint. He doesn't play to the whistle. I saw it on several plays against the saints where Murray is pushing the pile, other lineman are coming in to help push the scrum, and Martin is standing around waiting for the play to be over.

I was shocked to see it. I hadn't noticed it in other games, so I assume the coaches are going to call him on it in film study this week.

Anyone else notice this?

I had not, but all these recent discussions about not being able to see certain things on TV broadcasts has me really considering getting that NFL Game Rewind so I can look at the coaches tape when someone says something that either doesn't jibe, or gets me to wondering- like your comment.

But I think I read the All-22 doesn't get released til Wednesday and I want to fit at least two weeks worth of film review during their 7 day trial run before I decide to commit $70 to it.

So I may wait one more day.

Interesting observation and an unexpected one to be sure.

I saw at least two plays he dove right into the scrum and pushed Murray.

I think as the game slows down for him he will be a bit more aggressive...
and hey, it's always good to have different types of personalities on a team...

Yea, I don't really agree with this, but playing to the whistle is overrated anyways. Plays are often over for certain players long before the whistle blows.

There was a play where Collinsworth illustrated Martin getting off his initial block and getting to the second level. Murray showed up and was pushing a group of New Orleans back. Martin hesitated.

I think that has nothing to do with killer instinct. I think it has to do with being a rookie.

I saw him helping Murray when he broke all those tackles in the 3rd or 4th quarter.

I think that is probably it. in practice, you are not going to be told to play that way as it increases risk of injury. Hopefully the two plays in question are shown in the film room and they correct it and move on.

the two plays in question, playing to the whistle would not of been overrated as we were close to the first down mark

Eric, I look at the second series and Street was alone, trying to get Romo's attention on a third down. I have nothing to back this up, but if he were alone aqnd unguarded, why did he not run a post pattern and Romo lay it out for a touchdown?

I could be off on this, but I chalk that up to being a rookie.

But, I do hope Romo addresses this fopr in the future so all receivers know to just go for it. Because that little fade was lame.

Maybe he is smart and doesn't want to cost his team 15 years or be fined for committing a personal foul. I haven't noticed him having any lack of aggression. If fact I think he has a ton for a rookie.

Its possible that i am making this up, because it hasnt ever been called, but i thought it was illegal to push the pile. Or is it just directly pushing your own player?

I don't even know what two plays your talking about, but Martin is a savvy enough football player to know whether or not he could have made a difference on a play. There's no sense in pushing the pile just for the sake of pushing the pile.

I think there's a misconception about football in general that you're supposed to just hammer guys until the whistle every play. Smart players know how to do the exact opposite of that. I'm going to give Martin the benefit of the doubt.

lol I looked up the same thing, but I think it's that you just can't push your own player. Doubt that would get called anyways.

Play smart as a rookie and dont be making bone head plays so he can "look tough"

as long as he's making his blocks i can give a hoot how he finishes the play once the RB is 5to10yds down field...

thats when blocking in the back B.S calls are called

I just got done re-watching the game and that stuck out to me. He did eventually make his way to the pile, but I am sure he will be called out for it by the coaches. I am not really worried about it though, Martin is a heck of a player.

Two plays is not enough to reach a conclusion in my opinion. It is not illegal to push your own player(the one with the ball). It is my understanding that you can't hold them up, pull them forward up or carry them.

Martin is lucky to be playing at all folks... He has been suffering from plantar fasciitis for some time
and my memory serves me it is extremely painful and is long lasting. Please give this wonderful
rookie some slack for awhile. I understand that it's not an insignificant case and he will likely
play with it all season. The only cure is for him not to play and stay off his feet for an
extended period of time.
