I must say this is by far one of the most confusing drafts for the Cowboys in some time. Mostly because we are in good shape with our starting lineups, and so many players have very similar grades in spots we will be picking, despite their positions.

It will be very interesting to see how the Cowboys approach things.

I dont know about anyone else, but I find myself flopping back in forth with players and positions that should be addressed almost daily.

I can not remember the last time I was like this regarding the draft.
_________________________________________________________
Lets see here, what absolute needs to we have? IMO we have 2.

DT- we have very little behind Ferguson. He will need someone to give him breathers and keep him fresh now, and start at a later time, and we all know Wade likes them like mountains at DT.

Center - We only have 1 center on the roster, a backup is needed badly.

Both of these positions (DT, C) should be able to be addressed on day 2 in the 4th and 5th round, at least I hope.
__________________________________________________________

What moderate needs do we have? IMO CB, WR, FS but all positions are probably fine for now.

CB - fine with the starters, could use a nickle back (who knows how much Glenn has left), never can have enough good corners, and always want a good one to take over if needed, not any depth here that is starting material.

WR - Our WR's are getting up there in age, we need a legitmate #1 WR to replace Glenn or Owens down the line. We have some depth here but probably not difference makers.

FS - Will Watkins develop, can Hamlin provide what he was signed for, and prove himself for a long term contract. The answer is not known, but we have 2 chances here, probably both 50/50.

Then I look at the fact that all 3 of these positions probably have decent value where we are picking in the 1st round, then I start looking at all the players and I have so many graded about the same, all with pros and cons, but for different reasons. I just like to many guys @ 22. Some I like better than others just depending on the day.
Ginn, Meachem, Bowe, Nelson, Merriweather, Jarrett, Ross, Houston, Revis
________________________________________________________________
Then there is the what seems to be Nice to have positons for now but could be needed depending on different variables. OLB, Guard, Tackle

OLB- This is a mess to me, at least in my mind. What do we have here? Will Ellis rebound? Can that be counted on? Probably not. We saw what happened last year when we lost that pass rushing from Ware's opposite side, but does Wade's system make this less of a concern? Can Carpenter make this move if needed and be disruptive, how about Burnett? We know we have to have a threat on this side of the ball opposite Ware, it could make our defense lethal.
I like both Moss and Spencer, if either pans out to be a top notch rusher imagine the heat QB's would feel.

Guard and Tackle - The O-Line has hampered us for a while, I have been clammering for 3 years to fix the line. Is it fixed? Is Davis the answer? Is Adams our LT next year? I want a big, mean, dominant O-Line. I don't think we have that yet. I really like guys like Brown, Ugoh, Sears, Grubbs, and Blaylock and would love to add them to this line.
_______________________________________________________________

I am sure many are not feeling like I am going back and forth every day and know what they want, and many want very different things, and honestly most make very good points. I am not even sure there are right or wrong answers with all the draft talk that has been discussed.

This is one heck of an interesting draft for the Cowboys, frustrating for me, and I can not wait to see how it unfolds.

This is a good sign, actually a GREAT sign.

We finally have the chance to pretty much draft BPA.

AKA our current roster is loaded and ready to make a move.

I don't think you're the only one that feels that way. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of others who are scratching their heads too and like Smarta said, it's not a bad thing for once. :D

I agree. We could really make moves to upgrade FS (means Watkins), replace Roy Williams and Terrell Owens, and maybe even replace Julius Jones THIS year.

The possibilities are endless.

I feel you man, i have been going back and forth for a while now. I also agree with your assessment that DT and C are positions that 'need' to be addressed. Although i would add LB position in the mix also. Across the board we are very thin at the linebacker spot, especially for a team that runs a 3-4 defense.

I also agree that at #22 there will be 5-10 players that are valued somewhat equally at positions the cowboys need to address. Because this draft is loaded at the WR, CB, and OL positions, there should also be quality players in the 2nd and 3rd rounds in those positions. And they happen to be positions the cowboys need to address.

I raised a question in another thread a few days ago about trading out of the first round, if the opportunity presents itself, particularly if the boys can get an early 2nd and 3rd round picks this year and what ever else. But i wouldn't be against droping a few spots in the first and getting an additional first day pick this year either. Basically, i like the idea of getting four picks in the first day of the draft, since we need to address a number of positions for depth purposes.

Having said all this if by some divine intervention someone like Levi Brown, patrick willis, Amobi Okoye, Alen Branch, Gains Adams, or Leon Hall, is there when the cowboys pick at 22, i will thank the heavens and just make the pick;)

You know, I was thinking a trade down would probably be a good idea as well, as long as we can pick up a extra 2nd or early 3rd rounder.
It just may be the best thing to do unless the cowboys have some one at 22 they just love. But I am really strating to think that we can fall back 5 or 6 spots and get the same kind of player we would get at 22.

I go through this too CH. I really want Meachem at 22, but I no longer think he will be there. I think Tennessee will keep him in that state and get a weapon for Vince Young. They might go CB with Pacman in trouble, but I just have this sick feeling.

I've already resigned myself to the fact my first two loves will be long gone when we pick. I still say Laron Landry is second only to Calvin Johnson in this draft. Patrick Willis has shot up the Draft boards since the Combines.

Right now, more and more I am thinking trade down is what I want. The problem is when I look at who might be there at 22, I honestly have trouble thinking other teams are going to be itching to get there. That is the problem when there isn't a no doubt about it 3rd QB for the 1st round. Instant calamine lotion to soothe those itches.

IMO we need these positions.

WR (age of starting 2 & injuries)
CB (age & smart to always have depth)
NT (age, no depth)
QB (future)
OLB/ILB (depending upon where they play Carp)
OT (age, no depth)
TE (only 2 healthy on roster)

That's 7 slots and 10 picks with 5 of those pick being 6th or 7th round. This Draft is trickier than normal.

The TE prospect list is so poor that I wouldn't be suprised if we didn't draft a single TE but instead focus on a couple as undrafted free agents.

I agree. I feel that LB prospects are thin, but luckily for us WR, CB, and OT are fairly deep.

I also forgot C in my previous list.

If Jason goes 2 TE more than a FB offense then Olsen could be the choice.

I absolutely couldn't agree with you more here. Everyday I seem to flip flop on what I think we need.

Could use a good wideout for the future
Could always use a good CB
Need help at FS, although I think Watkins will be ok, it would be hard to pass on Nelson if he were there.
OT....C'mon, Flo hasn't impressed me lately
DE.....bookends opposite Ware would be deadly
DT....Ferg is old, and there is some quality DT's in this draft
RB....I'm not a Julius believer

Today, I was thinking about what we did the worst last year. Without question, I think it was our pass rush. It was FOUL. I truly believe that if we had a pass rush, our secondary would improve by leaps and bounds.

So for today at least, I'm on the DE, DT kick.
Tank Tyler would be ferociouss
Moss from Florida is going to be a PLAYER !!! I guarantee it. Imagine Moss and Ware as bookends? Lord have Mercy on opposing qb's.

Ask me tomorrow and I'll probably say somone else, but today, its D line.

zIf Garrett finds a FULLBACK in the moose type, like Hoyte learns to catch, or get someone like Anderson from Tenn, you will not see much 2 TE.

Why don't you stop being so rough on yourself and wait until we are on the clock when you know what the first 21 picks were. Once you know who is left, the choice will be much easier.

I decided to stop in and clear this all up. The draft this season is quite simple actually. The Cowboys:

1. will select players for offense, defense, and perhaps special teams.

2. will either stand pat, trade up, or trade down.

3. will make phone calls to the players they select.

4. Will NOT select any women players.

See how easy that was. :p:
