ya know I never did do the high school band thing (I played trumpet and barritone in JR High but opted to choose football over band in HS) but I do know those guys had to be real dedicated to what they did to pull off some of the stuff they did on the field at halftime....that being said, band practice has nothin on football practice and the same could be said during gameday...still though...Im notsure why Rome is bashing it as it sounds as if he's never played an instrument in his life...I mean a harmonica, and a recorder...REALLY JIM...what a dousch

Two things here:

1) Oboes are not generally part of the marching band. I know because I played the oboe.

2) Why would anyone consider Jim Rome an authority on this issue?

That's pretty impressive. The double reed instruments (oboe and bassoon) are considered the most difficult instruments to learn to play, followed by violin, which I played.

"Look, I'm sure that being in the band requires, I don't know, some dexterity," Rome said. "You do have to walk backwards and blow into a recorder or a harmonica or whatever you're playing. What I'm saying is I'm sure there is some minimum dexterity involved. Just don't tell me that you're as athletic, or working as hard as the guys playing the game. Because you're not."

I agree with Rome.

Ever notice how much louder highschool bands get when they stop marching? I guarantee if you have 100 members 40 can't play and march at the same time.

Thanks.

And the violin is very difficult to play. Because our high school had no orchestra program, it didn't have any violin players.

And regarding the topic, although a high level of athleticism is not usually necessary for high school marching bands, competitive marching bands are a completely different animal. Drum and Bugle Corps, for instance, are physically very demanding and require rigorous training regimens -- especially for performers in the rifle or color guards (depending on their gender).

1 more thing here.

1) Who plays the Oboe? Do kids run up to the marching band try outs with anticipation to play one? :p::p::p::p::p:

No.:D

Most high school bands have a marching season during the fall (football) and a concert season during the spring.

During marching season, I played xylophone in the pit, which required minimal physical exertion as it was mostly just standing around while the band marched behind me.:p:

During concert season, I played oboe.

In middle school, I was stuffed in a cabinet by the tuba section -- that's as close as I've come to being stuffed in a locker.:)

The tuba section was very mean. They were bigger than most of the football players.
