I understand the hesitation. I really do. But the last time I had this argument about a player I felt this strongly about was 2006 and it happened to be another UDFA. And I feel just as strongly now about Austin as I did then about Romo. But you don't have to take my word for how good this guy. I'm just saying wait until you see the guy in real action. Then you'll know what the hype from everyone that's been to training camp is about.
I wrote up a rather long post four months ago about that player and the ambient results of his success and the negative impact on the fans it will bring.
Cliff Notes.
Romo walked on and will set new records for the position by the time he is through. Some will hail him as the best this team ever had.
I will wait until he wins his thrid Super Bowl; and is MVP once in that game to crown him so.
But then I am a guy who thinks Marino was a quality QB, but no ring means he isn't top five in my book.
I digress.
The results of Romo walking on and being so good will cause fans every year to see people like Austin and Amendola and Danzler and Hambrick and believe if this guy just gets a chance, they will be sure he will be the next great thing.
Romo's skill set and success has now breathed life into the UDFA being the next Rudy for this team.
And each one of those guys will believe, as you do, that the player they now have this "feeling" about will be greatness.
But this league didn't make its money off UDFA. It made its money off recognizing talent and desire. Things you can measure.
So there will be threads each year professing, "if you just give the young guys a chance."
Those same threads were made about Quincy.
I think each player is a case by case incident. Deriving any inkling into the skill level of the player because of, "some other guy was a world shaker and I'm getting that same tingly feeling on the back of my neck" is almost to the point of being a paranormal experience.
I don't believe in ghosts or guys who have shown in one game thwey can sneak on a defense and the rest of the season didn't do much. Injury or no.
