I Know Many Are Fed Up With Marion Barber

Supposedly we need to do things like the Patriots do. Well, not all the time.

In the 2006 NFL Draft the Patriots used their first round pick on Minnesota RB Laurence Maroney.

The year prior to that we grabbed his backfield mate, Marion Barber, in the 4th round.

Maroney has only been a flop. He's always injured, lately always high it seems, arrests, and may be about to kiss his NFL career goodbye.

Our little 4th round pick paid off big. You can argue that he's run himself to death. I'll listen. You can tell me he's washed up. I'll listen. You can tell me he's over paid. I'll agree.

But the bottom line is Marion Barber has been a blessing to this football team. Especially for the minimal price we paid for him of a 4th round pick.

Place him side by side against the kid who was rated higher and expected to be better and the evidence just punches you in the gut.

Barber has more than doubled Maroney's TD scores.

He has approximately 1800 more yards rushing.

He has almost 800 yards more receiving and 6 TDs to 1.

But clearly to me the biggest thing is the respect Marion has in our locker room. Even amongst guys who if he carries the ball it takes away from them, he is admired.

I think we've been blessed to have him and I will be sad when he is gone.

The people that said he couldn't last long in this league with his style were right.

I love Emmitt Smith too, but I don't want Jerry paying him $5+ million a year right now. Barber was one of the funnest players I've ever watched. It's too bad it was only short lived.

Good post, but for the price...........he's not worth keeping cuz he's respected in the locker room I like Barber, but his time as a Cowboy has came to a end I think.

I wish him the best in all endeavors, and hope he a good long career, but he's body doesn't want to stay as strong as his heart.........
best of luck Barber if ur gone this year u will always be a Cowboys to me

Yep........

I don't think anyone has a problem with the draft choice we used on him. It's the big contract he got that's irritating. Maroney being a bust is really incidental.

I don't think we keep him. I've been saying that all off season. His contract doesn't match his production. It is unbalanced in the wrong direction.

Yeah. I couldn't be more happier with what Marion Barber did for us.

But the guy only had 3 gears to begin with and he lost his 3rd gear.

Add his contract to that and it's just a good idea to move him.

Love the guy but it's obviously time to move on.

Average NFL career 3 years, particularly RB. Cowboys got 3 years out of the guy so it is all good. I will say running behind that line it is hard to assign percentage of blame for his decline between him and the line.

It's the never being the same player once he got that contract that is the problem. Its an epidemic in Dallas and he is one of the main contibuters to it. Had he continued to be the same player, we would all be loving him right now despite the contract.

Also, not his fault but wish he had kept his position as the non-feature back..he was better then.

I personally haven't accepted the belief that Barber has lost a step or has taken too much of a beating because of his running style. I believe he has changed his running style and his approach. His first couple of years he would have never accepted stepping out of bounds, and the last few years he can make a cut to the sidline from the middle of the field. I think he took to heart the advice that some gave him about his career possibly beng shortened by his running style, but what he and those that gave the advice failed to recognize is that it's exactly that running style that made him successful. Once he accepted the notion that it was okay to avoid contact sometimes, he lost his edge.

I agree with this and made the same comments several times during the season.

I do think he has lost a little burst, but more than anything I think he runs almost completely different now, and he's just not a good enough back to be productive trying to make people miss.

I think there is some truth to this. I never understood why Dallas gave Barber so much in his extension. Call me cheap, but you don't extend guys like Barber with that kind of money. Adrian Peterson, yes. Barber, no. And if he didn't like the offer I'd have proposed, then I'd probably have said goodbye. There are usually plenty of backs to be had in the draft, guys that you can somewhat rely on for a few years before you need another. That, and if anything the Packers have shown everyone that a running game isn't that crucial to winning it all.

This is interesting...the thought that perhaps Barber's problem is more mental than physical. Still, if that's the case, it's obvious that his new approach isn't helping the team out any which is too bad. I really liked him a few years ago. Now, not so much...

Pay cut, put on 30lbs of muscle and I'll love you again as a monster FB that can also catch out of the backfield a little.

Hey Marion, don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya! :p: Kidding. I'll miss that intensity he brought as well. But I really think his time here is up. We have two hungry guys with fresh legs in Jones and Choice who are ready to take the lead.

And the one small thing he did last year during Jason's interim really rubbed me the wrong way. Jason was trying to set a tone for the same guys that laid down on Wade by having them dress up for business. Marion either didn't get the memo, or wasn't buying into Jason's sweeping changes. That alone tells me he is better served playing for someone else.

Yep, that's exactly the point.

That's right. In the end it doesn't matter if it's more mental than physical, it amounts to the same lack of production.

great post Hos

I don't know a soul who doubts what he HAS done for the team. The problem is now what he CAN do for the team, which is not in line with what he is being paid.
