I Know Many Are Fed Up With Marion Barber

I think it's 2 sides of the same coin. I believe Barber took such a beating his first 3 seasons that he knew he had to change the way he played....which took away the primary reason he was on the field to begin with. He may have made a conscious decision to do that, but at his age and the mileage on his wheels, it's not like he can go back to the runner of 3 years ago.

As I have said and will continue to say....the fanbase of this team has become drunk on mediocrity. Has he been productive? Sure. Has he been a hard worker on and off the field? Sure. Has he won? No...so who the you know what cares?

I agree to some extent. I've said this many times. Being 41 and growing up in the mid-70s forward with the Cowboys you got used to excellence. It was always expecting excellence. With the exception of the late 80s they always seemed to acheive success. (I mean you had 20 winning seasons from the late 60s to mid 80s). But after the 90s runs things have tailed off. Now people seem to just want the playoffs and the gleem of expecting excellence has turned to expecting mediocrity and hoping to win. People wouldn't be here on the board if they didn't care but I sure as heck don't like the same stuff, different day with the way things are panning out. Barber was a beast but he shouldn't be in the plans.

I was amazed at how many posts/threads there were last year(in the middle of our 1-7 start) on these boards about "who was going to make the Pro Bowl".

It starts from the top down. Jerry has created and cultivated this environment. Which is WHY year after year HE thinks and is able to convince fans/media that we are drunk with talent...only to see this band of pansies crumble under the pressure and jump out to a gaudy 1-7 start.

Sorry, not in the mood to opine on guys we "can't live without"

Barber is like yesterdays corn bread. I say cut your losses. Watch the highlight video posted in this thread to warm your heart of what once was. The time has passed.

I personally haven't accepted the belief that Barber has lost a step or has taken too much of a beating because of his running style. I believe he has changed his running style and his approach. His first couple of years he would have never accepted stepping out of bounds, and the last few years he can make a cut to the sidline from the middle of the field. I think he took to heart the advice that some gave him about his career possibly beng shortened by his running style, but what he and those that gave the advice failed to recognize is that it's exactly that running style that made him successful. Once he accepted the notion that it was okay to avoid contact sometimes, he lost his edge.

Spot on! He was coached out of running his style. Add the O-line issues and here we are. The writing does seem to be on the wall for him tho. I think he could have a show and prove season this year. Although I don't what uniform he'll be wearing.

I think Barber could rejuvenate his career somewhere else, he just needs a line that gives him a chance to get some speed up into the line.

As it stands, the worse our run blocking has gotten, the worse Barber has gotten. He's not a guy that can make a guy miss at the line of scrimmage, never was.

I don't really think his decline has anything to do with his running style wearing him down.

Exactly this.

He is 28 and 10 lbs. lighter.

He is the same player, the line is getting fatter and worse. Barber cant make himself small or bounce it outside(no matter how much he tried to lol!!1! derp).

He will be solid somewhere else next season at the appropriate price

If Dallas finally solidifes the OL, I'd love to see Barber running behind it again in a complimentary/short yardage RB role, because I believe he'll look about 3 years younger running the ball under those circumstances. And if that happens, a year from now we'll be posting to threads titled "Thank goodness we held onto Marion Barber".

He was productive for a short while, but "The Barbarian" is gone. Also, I grow tired of his on-field antics. He acts like he just trucked six defenders on his way to the Superbowl winning TD after every four yard run.

Supposedly we need to do things like the Patriots do. Well, not all the time.

In the 2006 NFL Draft the Patriots used their first round pick on Minnesota RB Laurence Maroney.

The year prior to that we grabbed his backfield mate, Marion Barber, in the 4th round.

Maroney has only been a flop. He's always injured, lately always high it seems, arrests, and may be about to kiss his NFL career goodbye.

Our little 4th round pick paid off big. You can argue that he's run himself to death. I'll listen. You can tell me he's washed up. I'll listen. You can tell me he's over paid. I'll agree.

But the bottom line is Marion Barber has been a blessing to this football team. Especially for the minimal price we paid for him of a 4th round pick.

Place him side by side against the kid who was rated higher and expected to be better and the evidence just punches you in the gut.

Barber has more than doubled Maroney's TD scores.

He has approximately 1800 more yards rushing.

He has almost 800 yards more receiving and 6 TDs to 1.

But clearly to me the biggest thing is the respect Marion has in our locker room. Even amongst guys who if he carries the ball it takes away from them, he is admired.

I think we've been blessed to have him and I will be sad when he is gone.

Nice post. I'm not sick of any of our backs. I'm sick of our O line, and lack of real attention our franchise pays to it.

The extension was insane. Just stupid. For a speed back you might have been able to justify it. But for a power back that everyone knew only had a couple of years left at best it was totally stupid.
