(In bold ^^^^): No, sir. The NFL made a new exception (thanks to the 49ers going through 3+ QBs in 2022 due to season-ending injuries) starting this year that every team can carry a 3rd QB without it affecting their 53 man roster.
I thought that they still counted on against the 53 man roster, but they didn't count against the active game day roster. So, you could keep all three guys active for game day without it costing you an active spot, but you're still limited to 53 total.

Grier looked good in college but may need time and opportunity to intersect at this level. I can't wait to see both these qb's in live game action.

Hmm, hard to truly understand. Here is what Wikipedia says:

"The NFL implemented a revised third quarterback rule for the 2023 NFL season in response to the 49ers sustaining injuries to both of their active quarterbacks in the NFC Championship Game.[4] The third quarterback can be placed on an inactive roster spot where he would not use a spot on the 53 player active roster. He may enter the game if the quarterbacks on the active roster are injured or disqualified. Unlike with the rule put in place in 1991, if a quarterback from the active roster is medically cleared to enter the game he may do so and the third quarterback must leave the game.[5]"

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thi...ack can be,roster are injured or disqualified.

Here is what the NFL's website says:

"Full language of the updated bylaw:

One hour and 30 minutes prior to kickoff, each club is required to establish its Active List for the game by notifying the Referee of the players on its Inactive List for that game. Each club may also designate one emergency third quarterback from its 53-player Active/Inactive List (i.e., elevated players are not eligible for designation) who will be eligible to be activated during the game, if the club's first two quarterbacks on its game day Active List are not able to participate in the game due to injury or disqualification (activation cannot be a result of a head coach's in-game decision to remove a player from the game due to performance or conduct). If either of the injured quarterbacks is cleared by the medical staff to return to play, the emergency third quarterback must be removed from the game and is not permitted to continue to play quarterback or any other position, but is eligible to return to the game to play quarterback if another emergency third quarterback situation arises.

A club is not eligible to use these procedures if it carries three quarterbacks on its game day Active List [47- or 48-players in 2023]."

Apply in to a specific team, i.e. the Cowboys - and it will be easier to understand.
QB1 = Prescott and (up to this point) QB2 = Rush - will be on the 53/active roster each week during the upcoming season. QB3 = Grier will be on the practice squad/inactive list each week as long as Prescott and Rush are not injured where they can't play.

Flash forward to week 5...Dallas @ San Francisco October 8th.
QB1 Prescott and QB2 Rush are on the 53 game day roster, and are suited up to play. QB3 Grier is inactive for the game (as usual) - but is in full uniform.
Qtr 1 -- Prescott suffers a groin injury scrambling for a first down, and is out for the rest of the game. Enter QB2 Rush to take over.
Qtr 3 -- Rush gets sacked on a passing attempt, and suffers a concussion, and is ruled out of the game.
QB3 Grier - who has been inactive since the morning of the game (as usual each week) - now IMMEDIATLEY becomes an active player for the rest of the game, and Grier takes the field to quarterback the rest of the game for the Cowboys.
No other Dallas player that was active for that game has to be declared inactive to account for Grier becoming an active player.

I'm hoping he comes out of pre-season #2, I like Rush, but he's a solid bandaid,. Grier has potential.
Does he? Carolina didn't think so, and they had a mess at the QB position. I'm not saying you are wrong, but it's hard to have much confidence given that he has been in the NFL 4 years and has pretty much been a rd team/practice squad guy.

That's what I initially thought. Thanks for clarifying brother @Motorola .

To answer @Kevinicus question, so Will Grier would not be on the 53 team roster? So he would then have to be on the Practice Squad? If so, does this mean Grier could still be stolen from our Practice Squad by another team, or is he protected from being stolen?

But he came back and won that 5 int game , isn’t it . If Grier can manage that then he may have a chance
Throwing 5 pics takes a quarterback, coming back from that performance takes an entire team.

Each week on the Practice Squad, a team can designate 4 players that cannot be touched by any team each week.

America's Cowboy -- yes...Grier will not be on the 53 active roster.
I just looked at a 'Bleacher Report' article from May about team rosters each game.
53 players are active each week during the course of the season...but only 46 can suit out. (Given the rigors and toll of the sport --- only 46 dressing for game day is absurd.)
But the new emegency QB rule means the QB3 is the only player not on the 46 gameday, or the seven other players that make up the 53 active roster -- who can be in uniform on the sidelines each game.

As far as Grier being "stolen" by another team during the course of the season - the league has a few rules that minimizes \ discourages teams from doing it.
Chief among them: a practice squad player on team A can be obtained by Team B -- but Team B MUST PUT THAT PLAYER ON ITS 53 ACTIVE LIST. So Grier can't be poached by the Eagles to put on their practice squad.
Then, in addition to him being put on Philly's 53, they must pay him three weeks salary...plus Grier will count against the Eagles' 53 roster for three weeks, even if they cut him sooner than that.

He must not have it between his ears. We know Rush is smart but doesn't have an arm, so what does this say about Will Grier? I wonder if he still goes up to grandfathers mountain. lol "good night john boy"

The rule says the emergency QB would come from the 53 man active roster

I have been watching a lot of Footage of Practice and the QB's look good. We watched Rush last year and we know that He is physically limited but is very savvy

I was interested in Grier, so I did a quick search. I was already aware that He was a highly touted QB recruit and even a Heisman Candidate. I never watched that much of His Film

After watching this . . . I have 1 Question . . .

Is He dropping Dimes?

I Do not think there was a QB that we could have drafted that would be better then Him

Go Cowboys

Good thing youre not in charge. He's trash.

Unfortunately for him I think Rush is locked in based on us going 4-1 last year with him.
not really a huge fan of that thinking. I am not in the FO but all the success Matt Cassell had as a back up he sucked when he came here. Back-up QBs are one of those things if you can upggrade without breaking the bank you do it. in the grand scheme of things Rush up until last year was pretty much an unknown.
