In 1977 we needed a RB in the worst way. We had the 14th pick in the Draft. We traded that pick and two 2nd round picks to the Seattle Seahawks to move up to the #2 spot.

Then Tampa Bay did something beyond shocking. John McKay went complete homer and took Rickey Bell whom he recruited at RB for USC over Tony Dorsett, leaving the best player in the nation to fall right in the Cowboys laps and right into the Super Bowl.

If we had not had this happen we probably would have taken Ricky Bell and no disrespect to him, but he was no Tony Dorsett by any wild stretch of the imagination.

If we had gone another direction the best RBs in that Draft class were Wilbert Montgomery (6th), Terdell Middleton (3rd), Wendell Tyler (3rd), Rob Lytle (2nd), Horace Ivory (2nd), and Rob Carpenter (3rd, Bobby's dad). Other than Wilbert Montgomery there is not one other name on that list I would even remotely want in retrospect and that includes Ricky Bell.

Yep, I love it when fate smiles on us.

I actually have. I just don't think my two areas of "expertise," the NFL and the Old West, would be much sought after courses.

I was absolutely giddy when we got Dorsett.

The only other time that came close for me was when the USFL folded and we got Herschel. I literally had a dream at night of watching the two run out of the same backfield, that's how excited I was. I've since realized that having two franchise backs does not come close to doubling your firepower.

The only other time I dreamed about the Cowboys was many years ago (I forget when) when I dreamt that Roger had come out of retirement and was under center again. :laugh2:

depends on who you ask ;) I would almost guarantee there are enough history buffs for the NFL who would love to hear tales of the past Legends, I say you get on the phone to Mr. Jones and talk to him about getting a history zone set up in the new Stadium :)

Those would have been my two favorite courses during my 9 years of college. :D

yes, you have to have fate, like in 1974 we traded toby smith and billy parks for first overall draft pick, which turned out to be Ed Too Tall Jones.
In 1975 we traded Craig Morton for the 2nd overall pick in the first round, which turned out to be Randy White.
Atlanta Falcons had the chance to draft Randy White, but they chose Steve Bartoski. So, yes you have to have fate fall on your team now and then to help you get that excellent player.

I'm still confused about the sequencing. How long before draft day did we make the trade? Did we know for sure that Tampa would take Bell? If not, were we rolling the dice and hoping that Tony would be there? Or did we consider Dorsett and Bell to be equally talented, meaning we'd be happy to draft whoever was left?

I loved the running back by committee that Dallas had just prior to '77. Preston Pearson, Scott Laidlaw, Robert Newhouse and the immortal Doug Dennison were some of my favorite players.

But everyone knew that Dallas was a gamebreaking running back away from being almost unstoppable. It all happened perfectly.

Trade.

Super Bowl.

Hall of Fame.

And Dallas came back in the third round that year to draft Tony Hill.

:laugh2:

That's almost unfair.

No, I think we were as shocked as anyone when McKay tabbed Bell. The trade happened 2 weeks before the Draft if I remember correctly and the guy who pulled the trigger for the Seahawks (name escapes me right now) used to work for Tex Schramm and some people whined that it was him owing Tex a favor. When we ended up with Tony over Ricky the whining got even worse.

Tony Dorsett is the only player in NFL history to do all 5 of these things.

1. Be on a National Championship team.

2. Win the Heisman trophy.

3. Win Rookie of the year.

4. Win a Super Bowl.

5. Be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I loved Tony "Thrill" Hill.

Where is Dorsett's son playing football now? For who, and what position does he play?

He was a safety for the Titans and the Raiders, but I think he's been out of the league for a couple of years.

He's out of football, but he had a solid enough career. About 8 years or so.

And on a random note, I believe Ty Law and Anthony Dorsett are cousins.
