No no no...not THIS Parcells guy... but ...THAT Parcells guy.

I couldn't sleep last night...so I was flippin' around the channels on the tube and found a program about the '86 Giants.

They mostly interviewed Simms (Who I think is a great character) Parcells and LT.

A few highlights...When the team was playing poorly against the Packers Parcells went nutz on them in the locker room at half time and ended up throwing garbage all over some defensive player and then tossing the pail against the wall. And then informed them that the were all "Horse S---"

Of course they went out in the second half a dominated the Packers but it became a running joke for the team from that point forward to ask Parcells "So are we just regular S--- today or Horse S---"

In the SuperBowl vs the Broncos, Simms was 22-25 (with two drops). On the drive that won the game for the Giants, Simms took a sack but later came back to throw a TD pass that iced the game. As he's going back to the sidelines, he sees Parcells waiting for him. Simms figures he's gonna be congratulated but instead Parcells says "Simms, come here. You CAN'T take a sack in that situation" and Simms replied "Parcells, WHO GIVES A S---?!"

From that game forward, every time someone asked him a question about Simms he would correct them, "It's not 'Phil Simms"...it's 'The GREAT Phil Simms'...ya gotta add that to make it correct"

Against the 49ers, before a playoff game the Giants would win 49-3, Parcells was all over his offensive line because during the season, the Giants had rushed for only 13 yards vs the 49ers. So, Parcells called them "Club 13" all week. Needless to say, they went out and manhandled the SF defensive line.

Before the Championship game vs the Commanders, he was asked if he feared the Commanders and he replied "I'm afraid of spiders, snakes, and the IRS."

And when his team won the coin toss, he chose to hand the ball to his defense and put the Commanders against the wind in the first quarter. The Giants kicked off to start the game and put the proverbial wood to the Commanders.

Throughout the entire program, there was an animated Parcells on the sidelines...at times laughing...getting in the face of players too...but at all time, very animated.

After watching the show, I remembered why I was so happy when we signed him. As I've said for the past three years, This is NOT the same coach.

I like THAT Parcells guy.

I'm afraid, that guy has been missing for years. It's a different game, and he can't scare anyone anymore. He needs true talent on the field now, so every draft choice and every FA pick, he needs to hit on about 90% of these guys, and unfortunately, we've missed on the OLine.

Well said J.

We certainly didn't see THAT Parcells on the sidelines this year. And he almost seemed removed from the whole situation.

If that's what we are going to get in 2007 then I suggest he retire.

Nice post Juke. Perhaps we might see "That Parcells guy" this next season. Reason being, it is most likely going to be his last year as a coach, and he will want to go out at least giving his all to the organization, players, and his legacy.

Let's all hope anyway.

But then again, we have not heard squat from the guy on whether he will return or not, although all signs point to him giving it one more shot.

Nice read.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure those motivational techniques would work on teams these days, particularly the Cowboys, whose players seem largely unmotivatable.

I cannot understand the concept of an unmotivated athlete, to me the term is self-contradictory. In all the athletic events I have ever participated in, every player who didn't give his best was benched or cut. But then, we didn't have MTV and the players weren't millionaires and the coaches had standards and the players wanted to play and took pride in winning.

I have no idea whatsoever about what passes for pride or dedication or motivation these days. I feel sorry for anyone who has spent money to watch this crap.  :(:

And I'm sure the Skins liked "vintage" Joe Gibbs too. But that guy has left the building.

Oh, I don't know if they'd work or not....

I'd just like to see the guy be as passionate as he used to.

I've always believed and have seen it proven time and again, a team/organizaiton takes on the personality of it's leader. This team, except for when Romo first started, sleepwalks through games and plays without passion (especially on defense)

I stopped hoping for a return of this guy a while ago.

I started out VERY upbeat about him...but during the 2004 season, I kinda gave up hope.

Even his press conferences are different now. Back then, he had this crazy little spark in his eyes..and he was amusing as hell.

NOW, ya get a litany of mistakes that were made...and a lecture about football...and on and on.

He just looks like it isn't fun anymore.

Agreed, he doesn't look like he really wants to be here, but he has to regain what he lost to his ex-wife and he now has this really big expensive house he has to support and that takes megabucks, plus he needs to amass a fortune for medical expenses and other retirement needs and then there's all the other financial needs of a man of his stature in NY society, the racetrack etc., ZZZZZzzzz.

I think he's hanging on for the money more than for the potential of accomplishment, which I think is actually still there if he will let go and delegate to competent OC & DC and quit hindering the team, which he has done an excellent job of improving.

Any way you look at it, he's still better than Jerry.

Well, how do you expect the guy to concentrate on the game when he has an 87 pound cat, a jar of peanut butter and a case of Fig Newtons waiting for him at home?

The only way for this to work:
1-BP has to come for 2 years not one.( at least publicly)
2-He has to bring guys with fire like Jim Burt ...Bryan Cox...Pepper Johnson..etc.. to be in his coaching staff.( since they all know him well)
3-Give control of play calling to his Coachs
totally.
other then that it will be like this year.

so basically you think Parcells has to be a figure-head only?

thank you for re-affiriming what I already knew...that the guy is a liability now
