If the Cowboys didn't have anyone they deemed worthy of the 51st pick, then there was no need to select anyone. I trust the Cowboys' current scouts. Plus I see lots of value in the 3 through 5 rounds. These are the players I really like (and hope some are there when the Boys pick):

WR:
Brandon Tate
Mike Thomas
Juaquin Iglesias

LB:
Jason Phillips
Tyrone McKenzie
Gerard McBath

Safety:
Rashard Johnson
Chip Vaughn

DL:
Jerron Gilbert
Michael Johnson
Lawrence Sidbury

CB:
Bradley Fetcher
Asher Allen
Mike Mickens

If we end up with three or four of these guys, I think we'll be ok.

The problem is that we didn't get good value for the pick we traded away. Had they thrown in a 3rd next year as well then it would have made sense.

I want Johnny Knox, Jarett Dillard, or Mike Wallace at WR.

I'd also like us to pick up some OL.

Ditto.

Denver gave away next years 1st rounder for the 37th pick overall this year.

Next years draft will be much better than this one too.

I would have thought we could have gotten at LEAST a 2nd rounder next year thrown in.

This trade stunk. Simple as that.

If we can't find trading partners tomorrow to package up these picks for next years picks, this entire draft will be a waste. This is a POOR draft class this year. And we have 12, SECOND day picks???

Ridiculous.

I agree, it's not the idea of a trade down that's all that horrible (although, I still say we could've easily moved up to #48 to grab Unger and that would've been a much better move), it's the fact that we didn't get great value out of it. I think they could've thrown in Roscoe Parrish and it would've been a fair trade.

If Parrish was part of it, I'd be very happy because we would have our return man and veteran WR help. Without him, I think it was a bad trade. There were good players on the board at positions we need.

I find it hard to talk about value, especially when it involves the value chart. In some years, first rounders are definitely more valuable than other years. Likewise, in other years, middle round picks are more valuable, which I think this year falls under that category. I just looked at the players the Cowboys passed on, because they were picked, and none of them were must haves for me. I really like Johnson from Alabama an hope he is one of our targets...

I'm defending our front office in other threads, but the reality was this trade was not good value for us. That happens when you're stuck, no one wants to move up in a weak draft, and everyone knows you pretty much need to trade down. The Bills obviously have a pretty good idea what our needs in the draft really are.

Right the value absolutely sucked. I can understand the trading down. But the value.....sucked....

This draft, as was stated by several "draft experts" said most of the 1st rounders in any other drafts would be bottom of the 1st to bottom of the 2nd. But they will go 1 through 15 because someone has too.

So we trade down, get extra picks, and then the talent starts evening out. Like water seeking it's own level. At #51, we could actually get a #75 talent in a normal talented draft. So now we get that actual value.

But we don't now, because I think we gave that away with this trade.
If you look at it from a straight value / points system.

I do not understand, nor will I try. Will just wait and see what happens Sunday. Maybe we will all sit back and say "WOW", they ended up doing good after all.

I'm neither wowed nor disappointed yet.

This draft was weak from the get go and everyone knows that, especially at the top. With that in mind I like that we are in a power position during the meat of this draft.

With that being said, with our overabundance of picks in day 2, I think it is imperative that we turn some of that surplus into something next year. I'm willing to be patient because I expect us to do just that.

So why are you pissing on everyone that is questioning why we traded down when you yourself admitted that it was not good value for us?

There's quite a pile of players left who could be good finds:

QB: Rhett Bomar. Stephen McGee

WR: Derrick Williams, Brandon Tate,Juaquin Iglesias,Louis Murphy, Ramses Barden, Mike Thomas, Quan Cosby, Jarrett Dillard, Mike Wallace, Deon Butler

TE: James Casey, Chase Coffman

OT: Troy Kropog. TJ Lang

OG: Duke Robinson, Herman Johnson, Kraig Urbik, Louis Vasquez

C: Antoine Caldwell, Jonahan Luigs

DE: Michael Johnson, Lawrence Sidbury

DT:Jarron Gilbert, Roy Miller, Sammie Hill, Dorrell Scott

ILB: Jason Phillips, Daryl Beckwith, Dannell Ellerbe, Jasper Brinkley

OLB: Marcus Freeman, Jason Williams, Nic Harris

CB: DJ Moore, Coye Francies, Mike Mickens, Asher Allen, Victor Harris, Carey Harris, Bradley Fletcher

S: Rashad Johnson, Michael Hamlin, Chip Vaughn, CJ Spillman, David Bruton, Terence Moore

That's 48 players who may or may not be players in the NFL. There area few "pet cats" in this group and a few varying opinions. Hopefully, some of thse guys, or others I have not mentioned might make the grade.

We'll see tomorrow.

I really like the trade, too.

There are some players out there for the taking. Plus, the value is going to be real good.

Nobody at #51 to have wet dreams over, so trading down not that big of a deal.

A dozen picks tommorow is freaking sweet however!!!

who wanted the trade more, Dallas or Buffalo? Did Dallas want to trade down or did Buffalo want to trade up.....and which was more desperate to do so. Usually it is the more desperate team that gets hosed.

If we didn't get proper value, that leads me to believe we wanted to trade down far more than Buffalo wanted to trade up.

Is the value better if we reach and take a guy we rated 3rd round anyway?

It's clear to me we just felt there were zero 2nd round values left.

So while we didn't get equal value according to the value chart it is better to bite the bullet and take the best deal to move down you can rather than reach 20 spots for a guy. Because that is absolutely horrid value.

This team has a number of huge contributors who went in rounds 3 and 4 while round 2 has been a bit of a bugaboo for them.

this from nfl.com answers that question....

Cowboys’ Jones moves down for better value on Day 2

Posted: Draft | NFL.com Staff | Tags: 2009 NFL Draft, Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, Michelle Beisner

IRVING, Texas — For those of you watching on television, it may have looked the Cowboys passed on the 51st pick, before eventually trading it away to the Buffalo Bills, but that was not the case. I am told the official war room terminology for what happened is that the Cowboys got caught without a player.

Sources inside the Cowboys organization tell me the reason Jerry Jones opted not to pick at 51 is because all of the players at the Cowboys’ positions of need were taken. The Cowboys entered the draft looking for safeties and wide receivers, but Louis Delmas went at the top of the second round to the lions, Patrick Chung went next at No. 34 to the Patriots and Brian Robiskie went to the Browns two picks later. With those guys off the board, Jones set his sights on offensive lineman Max Unger. But when the Seahawks took Unger just two picks before their own, Jones decided the Cowboys would be able to get a bigger bang for their buck with tomorrow’s price tag and moved back into the third and fourth round.

A typical Jerry Jones draft usually includes at least one move up the board to select the player he covets. When I spoke to Jones earlier in the day he indicated that wanted to move up, but it looked like he was going to have to stay at No. 51.

Of course, we now know that didn’t happen. The Cowboys traded the 51st pick to Buffalo in exchange for the 75th and 110th pick. This is extremely uncharacteristic of trader Jerry to not have any movement in the first two rounds, but unless something drastic happens, it doesn’t look as if the Cowboys will be selecting their first player until Day 2, when the team will have 12 picks.

That's the point most people are missing here. It is worse to reach than not to get full value for moving down and still getting one of those similarly rated guys later.
