Herschel Walker was the celebrity participant in the 2006 Cox MS-150 Atlanta Challenge... a 150 mile bicycle ride to raise money and awareness for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He and I were at the same hydration stop. Herschel was having his bike looked at by a bike mechanic, so I had a couple of minutes to chat with him. Nice guy. Here's a rough transcript:

Me: Hi Herschel, my name is David.
HW: Hey.
Me: I wanted to let you know that you are one of the reasons I started getting in shape.
HW: Really?
Me: Yep. When I was growing up, we used to hear stories about all of those pushups and situps you did everyday...
HW: (laughs) yeah, I still do all that crazy stuff.
Me: I am also a life-long Cowboys fan... so I wanted to thank you for your years in Dallas, and thank you for the benefits DC received from your years away from Dallas, and thank you for coming back and helping the team again.
HW: Alright. I think Dallas has a really good team this year. I think they will win the East.
Me: That's what I am hoping for!
HW: The Giants will be good, but I think Dallas wins it.
Me: Well, we are trying to get throught this ride as fast as possible so we can watch the game this afternoon.
HW: Have a good ride.
Me: Thanks. I appreciate it. I just wanted to meet you, because you have been one of my heros.
HW: Oh! Thanks!
Me: Take care...

He was very friendly to everyone there... he even picked up my friend's 4 year old daughter for a photo before the ride.

I also have a new claim to fame... I passed Herschel in the ride.
My wife pointed out that beating a pro athlete is quite an accomplishment. However, it was a charity ride, so there were no losers - only winners! I think I will leave out the part about him riding with his wife when I passed him ;) .

Hi. Wimbo. I don't post often but I will because I did enjoy your conversation you had with Herschel Walker. He too was one of my heros and you basically asked all of the questions I would have asked him given the opportunity to meet him as well.

Thanks

He was one of my favorite Cowboys of all time back in the day. As a matter of fact my best friend who happens to be a Commanders fan met Herschel and gave me an autographed football of his.

He was awesome; I shudder to think what Landry would have done with him had he been with Dallas from the start of his pro career. Landry was great at utilizing offensive talent, getting mileage out of outcasts like Mike Renfro and Ray Alexander.

One of the classiest guys ever to wear the star IMO.
Probably my favorite Cowboy player of all time, and then there is always Tom Landry.

Nobody used Herschel the right way except Tom Landry, ... 1500 rushing and 500 receiving in 1988.

And over 1500 combined in 87 & 86.
