I am not surprised by this. I hope they stay in St.Louis. I have always thought it hurts the sport when teams relocate to other cities. If they were going to move again, I would prefer them to stay in that area and perhaps move to a place like Birmingham or Memphis. Since there has been a lot of talk with our new stadium, let's talk about Edward Jones Stadium for a minute. I always thought that was a poorly planned stadium. For one, I know that it gets humid but St.Louis needs to be an open air team, come on. I never understood why St.Louis and Atlanta built domes. Of course, I hate domes anywhere they are built. I would love it if Minnesota would go back to playing outdoors whenever they settle their stadium issue. Edward Jones is such a dark stadium. It always looks dark inside and the crowd doesn't seem to get into their games very much (granted they don't win a lot). I am all about having fun at a game and the NFL needs to do more to make it exciting for fans.

They sure were having fun when I was at the Dallas game last year. Getting taunted left and right, especially as we were leaving.. My only comeback was that at least I'll have a team in a couple years. You just knew Chip wasn't interested in having a football team.

Your right, the Ed sucks as far as a football stadium. I hate too see them lose another football team, but they dropped the ball the year the league expanded and Jacksonville took their slot. Now their stuck with whatever greedy owner wants to use them as leverage, if or when the Rams leave.

I can only hope that both cities hold firm and agree not to spend tax payer dollars refurbishing/building stadiums for billionaires.

I also predicted they were going back to Los Angeles. That remains to be seen.

Aren't we supposed to give out cookies for predictions and/or I told you so's?

Just checking.

For some odd reason, I've always liked the Rams. Don't know why. Just one of those things.
Here's a trivia tidbit for everyone. The Rams are the first professional team to have a logo on the side of their helmet. Back when they were in Cleveland the ram horns were the first.

I like the old Rams colors of blue and yellow much better than the darker blue and gold they sport now. I think the blue and yellow was a great combination. The new ones not so much.

Maybe the guys saving up for that billboard can shift focus and instead pool their money to buy the Rams.

That way, the armchair GM's can run the team (into the ground) how they see fit.

I bet they could draft better than Jerry did post Jimmy.

Rams' future in St. Louis appearing shakier

May 31, 2009 12:58 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando

If you aren't following Bernie Miklasz on Twitter, now might be a good time to start. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist just let followers know that the Rams have retained Goldman Sachs to help find a buyer for the team, and that selling to an out-of-town buyer could be an option.

This should shock no one. Rams owner Chip Rosenbloom has been open to offers. The latest development means the team will be seeking a buyer. It's what an owner does when being "open to offers" doesn't produce a buyer.

Miklasz has filed a column providing additional details and analysis:

Rosenbloom wants to sell to local owners, but none have stepped forward.

Rosenbloom declined comment to Miklasz, saying he didn't want to disrupt efforts to build a winner. Might be too late on that one.
The Rams can break their stadium lease agreement after the 2014 season if the Edward Jones Dome does not rank among the top eight NFL stadiums. Miklasz called that "virtually impossible" given that about two-thirds of NFL teams will have stadiums newer than the Edward Jones Dome by 2010.
Moving the Rams back to Los Angeles jumps out as an obvious possibility. The league has wanted to return to the city. The Rams have roots there. I'm heading to St. Louis for Rams minicamp next week. The team won't be gone by then, of course, but the NFL's future in St. Louis appears more tenuous without strong local candidates among potential buyers.

I had expected the Rams to take this step earlier given the massive estate-tax bill the current ownership group assumed once longtime owner Georgia Frontiere passed in January 2008. A prominent St. Louis tax expert provided the following information to me at that time:

The tax is due nine months after the date of death.

Upon application, the IRS has discretion to extend the payment date. This is usually for a limited amount of time. An extension prevents late-payment penalties, but interest will still be due from the original due date for payment.

There are also circumstances where payment of the tax can be deferred for a number of years. (Again, interest must still be paid.) Whether extended deferred payment is available is often a complicated question.

Ms. Frontiere's estate might be able to borrow to pay the tax. Or it might have assets other than the franchise that it can liquidate to pay the tax. Absent those options, and absent a deferral as described above, the estate would probably consider selling its interest in the franchise.

I asked the Rams to clarify this last season. They refused. I had not followed up on the matter this offseason. I do not know to what extent the estate-tax situation might be playing into Rosenbloom's decision. However, I wanted to pass along the information at this time, as it could help us understand one of the potential issues.

I have never thought gold was a good color for a manly sport.

I suppose one could say the same for yellow (the old Rams color), but...I hear what your saying.

As an aside - I loved the old Viking/Rams rivalry.

Jerry keeps protesting that he would never sell the team, but like they say, "every man has his price." I wonder what his is. $2B?

I think yellow is.

The Rams, Packers, Vikings, Chiefs, Chargers, Steelers, and even the Commanders all look decent with yellow accents. I know two of them call the color gold, but it isn't.

Here is another bit of trivia. The Rams originated in one of the old AFLs that came and went. The Rams were the only team to survive by merging with the NFL.

Correct, way back in 1937.

I agree with you on the old colors, they were unique, now they are like several other teams'. I knew about the helmet logos but I bet most here didn't. I loved the rivalry we had with the Rams from the late 60s through the mid 80s, especially since I was the only Cowboys fan in a family of Rams fans.

I really respected the Vikings and Rams of the 70's and 80's when we were going head to head with them all the time.

If the Rams get moved, San Antonio would be a good choice I suppose. You'd probably need a new stadium as the AlamoDome only seats like 40K.

San Antonio's market ranking is 37th putting it 200,000+ households ahead of Jacksonville, Buffalo, and New Orleans.

If you do somehow decide to build a new stadium and get both San Antonio and Austin to collaborate, then you've got a total household TV market worth 1.4 million TV households. That combination would put it at 18th overall, and 200,000 households more than St. Louis currently has.

The big thorn in the groin is the fact that central and south Texas is HUGE Cowboys territory and San Antonio is a big part of that. However, when we took in New Orleans after Katrina we made a pretty good impression and really supported the Saints at the games even though they were only on loan.

If you give San Antonio a team, I'd go watch just because it's an NFL team in my backyard SO LONG AS the Cowboys weren't playing at the same time. I don't care if I'm willed an NFL team by mistake in an estate, the Cowboys would be first and foremost in my heart and mind.

Secondarily, it allows our Mexican neighbors to the south a chance to come up and watch a real NFL game on a regular basis thereby growing the NFL brand in another country. For those of you not familiar with San Antonio, we have a fairly substantial transient population of monied folks from south of the border. There is a great influx during major holidays and Mexican national holidays.

That might be something the NFL would consider in allowing a sale to a relatively small market such as San Antonio.
