Well, I didn't just walk out. I decided to venture out on my own as a contractor. If I can line up at least 8 days of work contracting per month, I can make more than I was making. I also have a part time job, just in case. This is the first time I haven't been gainfully employed since I was 14, so it's been a big jump for me.

Have any of you guys done anything similar?

I just retired at 50, not quite the same, but I'm already considering a job opportunity. My wife says I'm crazy. If you have skills, you will do great. If you don't, join us on the beer thread. Good luck, bro!!!

Bob, I come from a family that made their own living through hard work and creating their own business. You will love it, the freedom, the flexibility.

11 years ago at age 46. Living off of investments. Work a few times a year when it suits me. My situation is unique and I'm taking advantage of it.

You're in some type of IT right? I've always preferred full time employment with contract work on the side. You can always make a lot more money doing contract work. The standard has always been to charge triple my W2 hourly rate. I just prefer the steady work vs jumping from project to project and the inconsistencies of the people you have to work with.

In my current position, spent the first year building a great staff. Things are much easier when you can depend on those around you without having to badger them because they suck. Unless you're a one man workforce in contract. That is the worst part of it.

No, I'm a pilot. I dabble in IT, but not really something I can make viable right now, but I am working on that. I am planning on going to a coding bootcamp at some point.
 
No matter what the result, you will not regret trying. One less thing that will bug you someday that you did not try to do.

Same here bob! Good luck brother. I did the same thing, now I got too much time on my hands. Gonna find a little job somewhere just to keep from getting bored
 
My folks owned a shopping center during the 90s by valley ranch. Mike Irvin,emmit and the entire bunch would get their haircut at a place called Le Cheveaux. One time Irvin tried to bribe my bro $20 to get in front of him at the barber shop. He said he was running late for practice.
Being a good cowboys fan, my bro said fine but don't make it a habit.
