It’s odd because I pretty much agree with you, the reputation is deserved but I have a couple stories that contradict that. I’ll try to keep it short...I was in the Meadlowlands last year for the MNF game (black cat game) and will agree with the Giants fans. Most of the fans I encountered are very working class people from New Jersey. One I met on the train into East Rutherford even bought me a beer and invited me to his lower level seats.
The Eagles though - that's real hate. I normally can endure plenty of trash talking, but those guys like to throw hands and I'm not getting locked up over a football game. You don't get the reputation as being the worst fans in sports without being the worst fans in sports.
I live in DFW but travelled to Philthy for a tattoo. On one of the trips there was a blizzard and we holed up at the usual bar we go to in Old City, it’s usually filled with locals but that’s all it was on this particular day because everything was closed and it happened to be one of the only bars open. My accent was quickly noticed, football came up, yadda yadda yadda...we ended up buy those heathens beers and they did for my wife and myself as well. This wasn’t just with on group but several over the course of the day and at another bar as well.
My old roommate is a huge Giants fan, we used to the CowboysGiants game go every year here in Dallas. There was always friendly trash talking but the first game if the year at the new stadium when the Giants beat the Cowboys with a last second FG was an embarrassing as a Cowboys fan. Literally before the game even started there were Cowboys fans being pretty aggressive towards him in the parking lot, then waiting in line to get a beer, then in our seats...after the Giants won I even had to step in and was about ready to throw down. I was disgusted but chalked it up to one bad experience.
The following year we had a very similar experience so that was the last time I went. I don’t mind the trash talking, I actually enjoy it but when it gets to people getting in someones face, throwing things, etc then I’ll lose my crap, even if it’s an opposing fan (unless they started it). I get your in enemy territory but people have a right to attend a football game without having to worry about being hit or just enjoy the game in general.
Anyways, hopefully Cowboys fans have cleaned it up over the past decade, I wouldn’t know though because I haven’t been back and have no plans to.
