I really hope our coaches look at how the 49ers generate pressure

My biggest pet peeve with regards to our defense this season was our inability to generate pressure, even with heavy blitz packages. If Ware didnt get there nobody did and because Ware spent half the year playing hurt we didnt generate much of anything in this regard. I'm not even talking about the number of sacks, I'm talking about consistently hassling opposing QBs and making them uncomfortable.

Our philosophy this year was to have the players beat their men one on one, and when that didnt work we just kept bringing more guys until it either worked or more often we got beat for a big play. It works great if you have a loaded front seven like Pittsburgh or Baltimore, but when you have ONE legitimate star and only one other quality pass rusher it usually proves ineffective. Hell even the teams I just mentioned used a lot more confusion in their packages even despite being more talented.

Now, look at what SF did tonight and really all year long. They hassled Brees all day despite one of the best lines in football protecting him. Did they rely on their players beating their matchup every play? No, they had the Saints' line guessing all day. They ran stunts, brought exotic pressures and did it from every direction. On one play in particular in the fourth they blitzed five guys from one side and dropped the strongside end, linebacker and the nose tackle into shallow coverage. I rarely if ever saw exotic pressures from us this year, just blitzing into gaps hoping a hole would be there.

Rob Ryan's scheme turned out to be no different than Wade's schemes. The only "exotic" thing they did this year was bluff with all the linemen standing up at the line of scrimmage look.

I only hope that Ryan kept it vanilla because the players just aren't any good, they're stupid and couldn't handle the concepts, or possibly even both.

A year ago we were all getting excited about Rob Ryan because of the creativity he was supposed to bring to the defense. That Cleveland win in New Orleans in 2010 was the highlight.

It goes both ways. A better scheme and play calling result in more pressures and sacks.

Rob Ryan was supposed to being these exotic packages, schemes and blitzes. It flat out didn't happen. I will give him another year to see if personel was the problem but right now I am not sure that was it.

Aint's had nearly 30 points on 5 unforced turnovers. They gave Drew Brees nearly 10 seconds on one play and he almost threw a pick. Those linebackers and secondary were BEASTLY today.

Bingo!!! Or said another way, Spears can't execute the pash rush stunts like the niner's defensive ends.

They'll get a few INTs but only if the DBs can cover reasonably well and we get some pressure on the QB. O/W they'll just make a few more tackles.

The Cowboys don't have a player like Justin Smith, hell most teams don't he was an animal and was destroying any Saint or two Saints they put in front of him.

They were using 4 and getting pressure, there DB's and LB's were also covering like ours could never dream of, it's not scheme it's better players.

I love Lee, but he's no Willis, Bowman was athletic enough to stay with Sproles for the most part, They were athletic enough to slow Graham down. Hopefully Carter is our answer for that.

The key difference is Justin Smith. Aldon Smith and Ware are similar. We need another guy in the front 7 that can cause problems. I think it can be DE, NT, or OLB

The sack numbers can be misleading. I'd like to see the numbers for pressures and hits along with those sack numbers. San Fran generated consistent pressure all day and still gave up 32 points. Even with all that pressure you're bound to have some games where you give up big points. However, I'd say more often than not consistent pressure over the course of a game has probably led to victory often. One thing you don't hear too often anymore is Peyton and Eli having "happy feet" in the pocket. You could tell they were disturbed and some of their focus taken away because they could hear footsteps. Brees was "uncomfortable" all day but the guy is a great talent and found the focus to make plays around that pressure. He's on that level.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The story of the year was lack of interior line push on the both sides of the ball for us. No pocket for Romo, no pocket taken away from the opposing QB. Restore the trenches...restore the rings.
