I think drafting tweener S/CB and coverage Safeties

in general will really help our Defense this coming season.

We know that Wade can get pressure on the QB. And I'm sure we'll draft at least one more LB who can add more pressure in April.

I think the complete package of a healthy T Newman, and a more experienced Jenkins and Scandrick will be an ugrade over what we've had over the past few years at the CB position.

One of the things that really hurt our defense last season is not having a SS who we felt comfortable in coverage with (even with a healthy Roy Williams, IMO).

Sensabaugh should be an improvement. That said, I think we'll draft at least one coverage Safety to add to the mix, and probably one more CB with Scandrick-like qualities later in the Draft (who can also play the STAR position in some circumstances).

As long as the front 7 can continue to apply pressure, we should be able to play tighter coverages and hopefully force more turnovers.

I don't think Wade is going to draft a typical "in the box" type Safety, unless it's late in the Draft and more for STs play.

Of course, along with adding another coverage Safety, we also need to get an athletic LB with coverage skills to take care of the underneath routes. And I think we'll do that too in a few weeks.

I really think that with Safeties who can make plays on the ball, along with our young and talented CBs, as long as we're healthy and can apply pressure on the opposing teams' QBs, our Defense will take the next step.

true, just like patriots head coach belicheck said, the big bruising safety days are over in the box, now you need a safety that can cover with the spread offenses of 3 to 4 wide receivers

I'll never understand this fascination that Cowboys fans have with continuously drafting DBs.

How so?

It's an integral part of the defense.

Considering that we usually keep 10 DBs, you have to typically keep on drafting them.

Plus, they are also key for STs.

At this point we need some DB's to fill the roster and we've had some pretty decent success recently drafting DB's (Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, even Roy, etc). With Ball apparently going to safety, we really don't have a 4th CB. Furthermore, Newman is 31 and has been injured the past two season and while I'm projecting Jenkins and Scandrick to be the future starters at CB, we'll need a #3 CB in today's passing attacks.

Sensabaugh is only on a one year deal. I still like Hamlin to a degree, but I'd still rather see some better coverage from the safety position. Remember, Dallas had 59 sacks last year, but only 8 interceptions (30th in the NFL). And 4 of those INT's came from Newman, who missed a good part of the season to injury.

To me we need to get some DB's, backup ILB, backup O-Linemen, a backup QB for the future, and a backup NT and hope the WR situation works out.

It's too bad we let Oglesby go last season. Rolling the dice on Pacman ended up hurting us when it didn't seem like it could.

Not exactly fitting in the mold of the original topic - sorry Woods :), but thought this list would bring some possible consideration late in the draft to possibly compete for the #4.
Some nice speed here...

Brice McCain - projected 6-7 round 40 time - 4.33
Height: 5-09 | Weight: 185 | Position:CB | College: Utah

3/18/2009 - The Mountain West still isn't getting the credit it deserves for being a quality football conference. Apparently its players aren't getting the credit they deserve, either, for the quality they bring to the field. Utah was the only BCS team to finish unbeaten in 2008 but the Utes were not invited to play in the national championship game. Utah's Brice McCain was a three-year starter and an All-Mountain West selection but was not one of the 36 cornerbacks invited to the NFL combine at Indianapolis in February. But McCain (5-9, 187) showed the NFL at his pro day this month it may have made a mistake omitting him from the combine rolls when he blazed the 40-yard dash in 4.33-seconds -- the fastest time of any cornerback on this draft board. "They must be looking at the stats and not watching film," said McCain, of Terrell, Texas. "I had one interception last season and only three in my career. So everybody says, `He's not a playmaker.' Buf it they look at the films they'd see I don't get thrown at that much." McCain played in a man coverage scheme with his back to the ball on most plays and still broke up 21 careers passes. His pro day performance will give him a second chance in NFL draft rooms. "Speed gets their attention," McCain said. "Maybe they'll go back and watch the tape now and see I have the skills to cover anybody." - Rick Gosselin, The Dallas Morning News

Tony Carter - projected 7 or UDFA 40 time - 4.34
Height: 5-09 | Weight: 179 | Position:CB | College: Florida State

3/17/2009 - Tony Carter was upset not being invited to the NFL Scouting Combine...The former Florida State cornerback did something about it Monday. He ran the 40-yard dash in a hand-held time of 4.34 seconds or better. Carter, who is up 9 pounds to 179 since the 2008 season, also bench-pressed 225 pounds 17 times during pro timing. "I got pretty good feedback from coaches and scouts," Carter said. Carter was among the former Seminoles who took advantage of pro-timing day on the FSU campus in which NFL scouts and coaches observed them run the 40-yard dash, bench press 225 pounds multiple times and participate in agility and skill drills. "Because we had so many guys not in the combine, this workout became a little more important," FSU strength and conditioning coach Todd Stroud said. "We really had some impressive workouts. The numbers that Michael Ray (Garvin), Tony Carter and Antone (Smith) put up in the 40 should help them." - Steve Ellis, Florida Today

Jacob Lacey - projected 7 or UDFA 40 time - 4.42
Height: 5-10 | Weight: 177 | Position:CB | College: Oklahoma State

3/11/2009 - Oklahoma State Pro day: The Oklahoma State football program hosted its annual Pro Day Wednesday morning in the Athletics Center with 19 National Football League teams represented. Eleven Cowboys were on hand. Included in that total were 2006 grad Grant Jones and 2007 senior Jeremy Nethon. Oklahoma State's former players participated in the 40-yard dash, bench press, two different shuttles, the long jump and had their vertical leaps measured. Cornerback Jacob Lacey had the best day among the Cowboys with two clocking of 4.45 and 4.42 in the 40 and a vertical leap of 41 inches. Among the teams in attendance were the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tennessee Titans. Lacey measured in at 5-foot-9 7/8, 177 pounds. He ran a 4.50 and 4.45 in the 40-yard dash, had a 41-inch vertical, a 9-foot, 11-inch broad jump, a 4.25 short shuttle, a 7.51 cone drill and 11 benche press reps. - Oklahoma State football/Gil Brandt, NFL.com

Michael Ray Garvin - projected 7 or UDFA 40 time - 4.24(burner!)
Height: 5-08 | Weight: 174 | Position:CB | College: Florida State

3/16/2009 - Florida State Pro day: Florida State's pro day was held outdoors Monday on FieldTurf in Tallahassee, Fla., and was attended by 26 NFL teams. Linebacker coaches from the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles were in attendance, among others. Fifteen players worked out at the pro day. A player to watch is CB/KR Michael Ray Garvin (5-7 5/8, 174 pounds). Garvin, a world-class track speedster, turned in times of 4.24 and 4.28 seconds in the 40-yard dash. For comparison, either one of those times would have been the fastest at the combine in Indianapolis, as Maryland's Darrius Heyward-Bey had the best time at 4.30 seconds. Garvin also had a 36-inch vertical leap, a 10-foot, 8-inch broad jump and times of 4.34 seconds in the short shuttle and 6.97 seconds in the three-cone drill. Gil Brandt, NFL.com

What exactly confuses you?? In the current NFL, which is a passing league, you need to have guys who can cover... you need to have as many of them as you can possibly get, up to maybe 10... seven or eight real good cover guys will work a lot of the time...

That said, do you see even seven or eight real good cover guys on the current roster?? If not, some upgrading is once again in order...

Good stuff, Typhus.

I think we may need 2 more CBs, esp if Ball is going to play Safety. Regardless, even with Ball at CB, we only have 4. Typically I think we like to keep about 6 CBs.

Sean Smith come on down. Can play safety and corner. I think Dallas trades up to the top of the 2nd and tries to nab him.

It's probably due to watching opposing QB's dissect our secondary over and over again.

No team has 8 real good cover guys. Spending yet another top pick on a DB.....that's the Al Davis approach.

If I had to choose between the front 7 and DBs, I'd take the front 7 every time. With Ellis on his way out, we have one guy who can rush the passer on the outside.

The NFL's a passing league? Yes, so you need OL who can passblock. We have a group that struggles with it, and they're all 30+ to boot, and the guy in the most important position on the OL is on his last legs.

We also have one semi-proven receiver, a journeyman as a #2, and one intriguing prospect at #3. If the NFL is a passing league where we should be prepared for teams to try to overwhelm us, then we would need to be prepared to do the same. The Cowboys clearly are not.

It's a recipe for failure that this organization has been following most of this decade. And yet year after year there's an outcry for more DBs.

Who's talking about a top pick?

I think the numbers dictate, however, that we're going to need to draft at least 2 DBs.

Kenny Phillips or Brandon Merriweather would have been nice.

I wanted Kenny Phillips but the Cowboys had to go with a Corner.

Henry was on his last leg and Pacman is Pacman.

Im glad we got Jenkins. Especially that late in RD 1.

Im even more glad we found a player like Scandrick who played like he has RD 1 ability too.

We drafted 5 guys that if you took them in RD 1 you'd be more than happy with their production so far.
