2nd & Goal at DAL 1

I think I know where Peterson is going

if its a mid first, pull the plug and draft him, im not sold on all this cute stuff and if a team needs a good OL guy they'll take him. All the mock drafts are tossed out the day of the draft, or need we forget the good players that slide that day.

Sorry all the good players wont be taken by the 9th pick and lets face it, Dallas needs to keep Romo uprite, How great was it taking a WR with the first pick and Romo cant throw to him? Pretty good right? Right?

Take the CB or grab the OL but dont get cute, we cant afford it, 09 set us back hard and if we can make something of Smith, grab him at 9 and pay the man and move on past this horrendous bug that keeps coming back and biting us in the butt every year. Every year we try to get cute with the OL men and every yera around playoffs we're screaming "WE NEED A GOOD O LINE"!!!!!!!!!

Be done with it.

Dumb teams reach. If you have a guy rated as a mid or late first value, you don't pick him top 10. If you grade one player as a top 10 pick and another as a top 20, your scouting staff feels the top 10 guy has got a better shot at NFL success. You don't just take the worse ranked guy b/c you have a need.

Furthermore, Smith is a guy that many scouts feel may need a year to develop. He is a junior and needs a serious gain in strength. Don't get me wrong, I think he could be something special but he's likely not ready to plug in and contribute at this point

But would it be wrong or just different if the Panthers took LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson with the first pick in the draft? The short answer is this: it wouldn’t be wrong if he’s the best player.

“Why can’t you take a corner first?” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “A shutdown corner, or a very, very good corner who can harass the receivers, throw off their timing is important as it is because it’s turning into a passing league. How is he going to impact your defense? Can it also help the offense? There are a few really good ones out there. Does he help our pass rush? Does he help get the ball back and get our offense back on the field?”

Bill Polian of the Colts is one of the best drafters we’ve ever seen, so I asked him what he thought about taking a cornerback first. “I don’t think there isn’t any position that shouldn’t be taken first,” he said. “That pick carries a high price tag with it, so you want to make sure you are getting your money’s worth. So it goes back to take the best player.”

Well, I said some time ago that I did not think Carolina was locked into a QB. I honestly felt like they would be taking a big risk if they did. I think Newton is a Coach Killer waiting to happen and while I like Gabbert more then I do Newton, I don't believe he is worthy of that pick either. If I were the HC making the call, I would take a can't miss player over either one of the QBs. JMO.

In my honest opinion, this is how I see the first 4 picks going

Newton
Dareus
Miller
Gabbert

Obviously, it only takes one team to throw a monkey wrench in this and it could change everything. However, let's pretend these are the first 4 picks..How on earth do the Cardinals NOT take Peterson here? Who else is left?

I think that Jerry is going to have to trade up to AZ to get Peterson..it's not impossible but I think that's where we have to go.. I wouldn't be shocked if a 3rd rounder was still enough ammo to move up

Buffalo would definitely take Gabbert in that scenario.... Alot is made of Chan Gailey's love for Cam Newton, but he is equally high on Gabbert....

The ONLY way that Buffalo doesn't take either Newton or Gabbert is they go 1-2 in the draft....

stupid reaches, and by reaches look at the skins and Campbell. Drafting a guy maybe 5 spots ahead for a good upside and a year is not that bad. Come on, Dallas needs the OL men and hes right there, just draft and move on. Its not a reach and i dont want to lose a good thing. Again, stop anazyling every inch of every foot and get the guy you need.

Your logic would also suggest that we should go out and overpay for FAs. I mean, after all, we need them, right?

Get the best guy on your board. Don't have a scouting department if you want to draft to need every single time

just like any other team, we should draft BPA at a position of need; or trade down. If you cannot trade down look for a position that while not a need is not that strong and take the BPA there. Don't do one or the other.

okay first of all, lets think clearly, have you seen our scouting department? It irks me that they still have jobs. Second of all how many spots are you classifying as reaching" Come on, we need the guy, or once again did you forget that Romo got hurt, can get hurt and needs to be upright to play the game. Why pass up a sure thing at number 9? What are you going to get a few spots down that is going ot make the difference? Will you save enough dollars that we could afford 3 more players? Are you going to expand the roster number so we can add more mediocre players to fill the gaps?

The guy is standing right there, grab him and go. Come on, i expected better from you than this. Its a need, its a good player, the draft is a crapshoot anyway, we worked so hard to get to number 9, lets just take him and run.

"We need the guy"

Yet everyone is saying he likely isn't going to be able to contribute immediately.

We worked "so hard to get to #9" - That is exactly why you take a guy who deserves that rank, not someone who is a mid first rounder that we reach for b/c of need

I tend to agree.

Personally, I don't consider taking a guy at 9 whose theoretical value may be around 12-14 a "reach".

A reach is what we did when we drafted Q Carter, for example.

Now, if the Cowboys have Smith and let's say Carimi/Sherrod/Costanza ranked the same and they don't care who they end up with, and they can engineer a small trade down, that's different.

But from all the stuff that I've been reading on this site and other sites, the Cowboys appear to have serious interest in Smith. This information comes from guys like Broddaus (sp?), respected posters on this site, various media outlets, and that they are bringing Smith in for a visit to Valley Ranch.

What we don't know is where they rank Smith relative to guys like Carimi and Sherrod.
