I think it's pretty obvious that Hamlin brings more to our defense than credited

we didnt miss a beat with ball in the lineup, that tells me two things. either ball is better than i thought or hamlin was as bad as i thought. i think it was a little bit of both.

really? is that why 2 of our 5 losses came in those 4 games.

With Ball our pass D gave up 242 YPG whereas with Hamlin we gave up 220 a game. Considering that we faced a very bad Raider team and an inept Commander O in two of Ball's games makes it look even worse.

How exactly is Ball outperforming Hamlin?

did i ever say ball outperformed hamlin? it was more that we didnt miss a beat. we lost those games because our offense couldnt score not because our defense gave up too many points. i would hope hamlin would be a bit better than corner turned safety making his first starts at that position. come on now.

So he isn't as good ... but he wasn't terrible? Dude. We did miss a beat. With Hamlin out we LOST to two good teams. With Hamlin back we WON against two good teams.

See the difference?

He's good at what he's assigned to do -- taking away the deep routes. When he takes away both underneath and deep routes, I'll consider him all pro. But he's not bad by all means.

I'd just have to consider one thing about the stats... are you sure there aren't times when Hamlin has just blown an assignment so horribly that the play was technically his responsibility, but he doesn't get (dis)credited on these "stats" for it? This is all speculation here, but I've watched every game for the past few years and he's been out of position quite often from what I remember. Our pass defense in terms of yardage given up still is pretty average as well and has been over the past few years while our run d remains solid.

Mosley: Hamlin may be on way out

If there was one player on the Cowboys defense who underperformed this season it was definitely Ken Hamlin.
Matt Mosley from Galloway and Company was talking about what he's hearing on Hamlin...
Mosley on GAC talks future of Ken Hamlin
I do like the idea of drafting a big time Safety. From what I hear Taylor Mays is a big time Safety, but I think he was 'hotter' coming off the 2008 season.
Hamlin got a big fat deal and did not play well this season. He rarely made any plays and early in the season was pretty bad. There were plays where he took unusual if not just plain stupid angles on ball carriers. Then at other times he seemed to go out on his own and take himself out of plays with his guess work.
In 2007 Hamlin came up big with 15 passes defended and 5 INT's.
In the last 28 games, 16 in 2008 and 12 in 2009, he has a total of 1 INT and 4 passes defended.
Just imagine how great this defense would be with a ball hawking Free Safety like an Ed Reed. Right now Hamlin is certainly not that guy and he may just be on his way out of Dallas.

I mean people wanna ***** when he misses a tackle and stuff but how many times does he get deep or does any team beat our secondary deep?

I think teams not even attempting passes to his area is more of an indication on how well he covers -as his coverage on that Desean Jackson deep ball would show- rather than him just being back there, picking his nose and sucking on a sucker as most people wanna believe.

I also believe his lack of ints are more reflective on the system we play. Our FS is basically our protector back there and takes away the deep ball.

I agree. He's not the best tackler, and he does sometimes get drawn out of position by watching the quarterbacks eyes, but he's obviously doing a pretty good job because we had our best scoring defense in over a decade.

And, ever since he got here, the big plays in the passing game have been cut way down.

We could do a lot worse them him. I think that was proven when he went down with injury.

Ken Hamlin's lack of turnovers are a reflection on Ken Hamlin, not Wade's system. How many dropped INTs did he have this season? Last season??? It is not the system, it is his hands of stone. And a safety isn't going to force a lot of fumbles by tackling a ball carrier's ankles. Has anyone ever seen Ken Hamlin grab and rip with ANY kind of success on a tackle? That is a sighting even more rare than Bigfoot. Rarer.
