I think the people who are unhappy with the draft are simply confused. I think they aren't see the forest for the trees.

First I want to say that the draft is only ONE aspect of team building.

I understand your concern because we didn't do ANYTHING in 2009's free agency, but I ASSURE you that was an exception not the rule.

Jerry isn't broke, but he thought that the 2009 playoff game winning team was good to go. Add Dez Bryant and add Sean Lee, insert Doug Free as the starting tackle instead of Flozell.

First I would like to address the fact that Colombo was probably a bigger problem than Adams was, and should have been a priority to be replaced last year, but I digress.

Jerry didn't do anything after the 2009 season, because he didn't think he had to.

2011 isn't 2010, just as 2010 wasn't 2009.

We went 6-10 and had one of the worst defensive showings in the history of our team.

The 2010 season had such an effect on Jerry Jones.

- Fire Wade Phillips mid-season. Never fired a coach mid-season before.
- Hired Rob Ryan
- Selected a 1st round offensive linemen for the first time since he has owned the team, after seeing his franchise QB go down for a year.

Jerry is going to be just as aggressive in turning this defense around and if not in the draft it becomes painfully obvious that it will be in free agency.

I have to say Michael Huff would seem to be like a complete lock. There are those that think we won't even look at getting Nnamdi Asomugha, but they don't realize that Terence Newman is owed 8 million dollars this year. I don't see Jerry Jones paying anyone who was associated with last years secondary, 8 million dollars. He is do at least 30 million dollars over the next 4 years. Getting Asomugha now and releasing Newman is nearly a push. True it might be slightly more expensive, but there is a need to upgrade the secondary.

The fact that we went 6-10 is NOT lost on Jerry Jones. There WILL be highly paid players cut.

People are complaining about the Murray pick but they shouldn't. First of all he isn't going to be our primary running back. He is going to be a 2nd or 3rd option. Was he hurt before? Sure. Should that be a huge concern? I don't think so. People seem to have a consensus that he has the ability to have have been drafted in the 1st round. What people don't understand is that he is going to be thrown into the mix with Jones and and Choice. Barber is gone. He is going to make 4.25 or 4.5 million dollars this year and is due a 500k roster bonus 15 days after the start of the league year. The guy is GONE. Lonyae Miller of DeMarco Murray? Yeah... the pick looks better now doesn't it? The offense is moving towards a quicker, faster, more agile, and more finesse type of offense. This is only going to help Romo (Romo Friendly).

The corner we drafted was only drafted for possible depth. That's all the is. Pencil him in as the 5th cornerback on this team.

The wide receiver is also more for depth and development. I don't think we're going to see Roy Williams on this team. Like it or not I think we're going to see Ogletree upgraded to the 3rd receiver. This might seem like Ball for Hamlin, but I think it's not that key. Ogletree and Harris could strive in our slot. It's a change in offensive philosophy. Why have 3 receivers who are X Y guys in a Z position. It's a waste of money and Roy Williams just doesn't differentiate himself enough. There are also quite a few free agent receivers out there that shouldn't cost too much to add in.

Arkin should be in the mix to push either Kosier or Davis. He would at worst be drafted to be a replacement for Holland. I think we could still make a change here in trade/free agency depending on what we do with Davis.

Chapas was obvious. Bring in competition and then at worst you push Gronkowski to get better.

........your post has some good points and lots of HEART but....the main problem remains the same: Jerry Jones. VERY good owner but VERY bad GM. That can't be argued. He just can't and/or won't get out of his own way. :bang2:

Good post.

I think people need to realize that JJ is NOT done yet, as per his after draft press conference yesterday.

They are going to look at FA to fill the gaps on defense. They said that.

As for RW, I think he's on the roster this season, but I doubt he's on the roster in 2012.

The Harris pick is basically solid competition for the 4th WR position this year. D Harris has a big advantage in that he is a good returner as well in the STs. Harris will take either Ogletree's, J Holley's, M Johnson's, or Hurd's spot this season.

My guess is that Holley's and M Johnson's spot is in trouble. Hurd may leave in FA.

Great insight.

I wrote this and I hadn't yet watched the final press conference, but it highlighted pretty much exactly the same points.

its like getting angry if in past years we didnt stock our team through free agency before the draft. The process is just flipped this year.

They are obviously waiting for free agency to make certain moves on defense, and like stephen said perhaps even on offense.

That told me that they will look for replacements for Roy Williams and Leonard Davis.

I think Huff is a lock and if it is an uncapped year we will do the Newman for Asomugha salary swap.

He's done alot of bad stuff over the years, but they did a good job with the draft the last three days.

Garrett made him get out of the way, like Parcells did.

Loved the tone of the OP. But, regardless of the draft results, people are going to complain. It's human nature.

Some people here loved the draft and are waiving pom poms and toeing the same line they have for years: All is well. Every single move is pure genius. The Cowboys can do no wrong.

On the other side it's the same old song and dance, too: Jerry will forever hold this team back. The draft was horrible. We're doomed, again.

Last season I tried to be a little more balanced in my view of the Boys. Not everything the happy fans were saying was out of whack. And the "realists" had some valid arguments. In the end, the negative nancys' view ended up being closer to reality. That's just a fact. Unfortunately (depending on your viewpoint) the 6-10 result validated many of their points. That has carried over into this season. To which many will scream from the roof tops "I told you so!". Until things change the swell gets louder and louder.

There were some picks in the draft that puzzled me (considering the team needs). The Murray pick comes to mind. I didn't necessarily like the Thomas pick either (too many low round CBs on this team that don't seem to make an impact. Though I love McCann). But, I'm not going to type on a message board all day about how the world as the Dallas Cowboys know is doomed. I'll just sit back and watch with the cautious optimism of an "optimistic realist". I think many on this board are in the same boat. Unfortunately, none of us are heard amid the volume level of the psycho-babble of the extremists on both sides of the spectrum around here.

Go Cowboys.

We are not paying Nmadi $15 millon +

Nmadi wants to play for the Cowboys for free, but the NFLPA won't let him. :laugh2:

Jason Garrett is the new head coach. Rob Ryan is the new defensive coordinator. No trades during the draft and all of the players coming in are 'clean players.' And NOTHING has changed....:lmao:

Sorry, the chain of command still works...but this group is getting better. Now the team, and not talent hunt, starts to be molded.

Fixed it for ya.

Wow, really? It's sad when you're a hater in a historically pessimistic poster's thread. (Galian Beast)

It's simple really. Some fans just fell in love with certain guys that they scouted and watched video of... like Rackley.

They watch and read everything they can find on the guy and convince themselves that the guy is going to be a star at the next level.

In the meantime, a guy like Arkin doesn't even get mentioned on this message board and even though he's a very good prospect, he is an unknown quality around these parts.

Then, when Dallas doesn't draft Rackley, who many are sure is going to be a star, and they instead take Arkin in the next round... well, in many fans minds, we passed on a sure star and drafted a guy who is a nobody.

Draft after draft tells us that just because we love a Rackley, it doesn't mean he's going to pan out. And just because we haven't read much about Arkin, it doesn't mean he isn't going to be a starter.

But fans still rant about the missed opportunity with the known player and say that the unknown player was a terrible pick.

It is clear that Garrett influenced Jerry to sit and take the best player on their board (unless a home run trade comes along), and frankly I can't think of a better way to run a draft.

The year we drafted Emmitt Smith there was a DT named Marc Spindler that I was sure the Cowboys needed to get over the hump. I was so upset when we drafted Smith instead of Spindler (who was still on the board). Needless to say, I was a little off on that evaluation... and many are going to be off on their evaluations this year.

We fans need to try to fall in love with individual players a little less and when "our" guys get passed over, we need to try to not have a ****-fit.

A draft full of great athletes who love the game and were team captains in college isn't something to get upset about.

I think I am coming off negative like I dislike the draft. That isn't really the case. But I feel like a lot of posters have unreasonably "optimistic" expectations here. Since when have the Cowboys had a draft where every player was great or a star? I don't understand how you can watch the clips of Carter and think "this man will replace Bradie James". Bradie is a fierce tackler who fights through bodies and can jar the ball loose from guys. Carter is not that guy and you don't suddenly turn into that guy. I think he should be pretty successful in coverage but there's no way in my mind that he's replacing James any time soon. Murray should be a decent third down back. Choice is not irreplaceable and MB3 isn't either (we all know that). Arkin could be good in a couple years. Guard is the number one position you can draft a pretty talented guy in the middle rounds and train him up. Harris is just a guy, the only way he makes the team is ST (if he's a better/faster gunner than Holley) yet people think they're going to cut Roy for him?? Thomas could work out in a couple years or he could get cut before the preseason a la Jamar Wall.

I like that they are bringing in guys that are going to practice hard and fill needs but I don't think they're really going to make the team a lot better next season. Smith and Carter do fill probably fill 2 of the 3 biggest needs though.

Very well said . This is the issue with Mock drafts , Over at the draft zone day after day mock after mock fans posted "expert" mocks from other sites as well as there own.

Even then you would see someone post there mock and then see countless replies to the OP's mock saying nice mock but... I would take Rackley in the third over player A or or Kendrick Ellis over player B. What no Hysnoski? FAIL!

Mocks are fun to look but they are also harmful because people see them and then place a value on where that player should go . Like John moffit was in just about every cowboy mock but as a 4th or 5th round pick and he went 3rd . Nate irving was also a mock fav who we should have got in the 5th or 6th round and he went in the 3rd. Now these guys are reaches because he was suppossed to go lower at least according to the "experts" .

Carter is slated to play on Brooking's side not Bradie's. Lee can play both and was always slated to take over for Bradie at some point unless they find a big run stuffer.

This alone is an indictment on the team's ability to create and maintain the winning edge.

In business you are either moving forward or moving backwards. There is no treading water in business.

If Jerry - and that is the Royal Jerry meaning his staff as well - believe they needed only to hire back-ups as stated, they are idiots.

"Ya know Stephen, we have a pretty solid team, so let's not rock the boat and see if we can get players to challenge the guys we have starting."

I have seen the drafts over the years since Jimbo set sail and they underwhelm for the most part.

Our record, which is in direct proportion to the draft and free agency indicates this team isn't very skilled at stocking the pond.
