I think this team is in worse shape than we think

This disaster of a season has to leave you questioning the process that decided Brandon Weeden was an adequate backup after 2 seasons, and knee-jerking to trade for Matt Cassel after a couple of weeks. There are some legitimate coaching concerns from the top down. Special teams have been horrible, the defense can't get a turnover to save their life, and the WR coaching has been suspect. This is at a macro level.

At a micro level, when you start to break it down, there are some serious holes that need to be filled.

QB: Obviously, an adequate backup has to be a priority.

RB: McFadden is putting together a nice season, but do you really trust him to carry a big load 2 years in a row? Lance Dunbar is still unproven, and looks to be a one trick pony coming off a major injury.

OL: I think we're in good shape, but Doug Free needs at least someone to push him, if not replace him outright. Is this guy on our roster? There aren't a lot of good right tackles floating around in this league.

TE: Jason Witten is a sure fire Hall of Famer, but he has a limited route tree at this point in his career. He is good for intermediate option routes, and that's about it. He has never been a red zone target, and the two guys behind him aren't able to push for playing time. He is playing a ridiculous number of snaps this year.

WR: Where do we start? We have a lot of guys who are extremely limited, with very little explosion. I think Dez will come back better, but his lack of focus and production is pretty disturbing. Terrance Williams has proven that he needs to be replaced. Beasley, again, is extremely limited in what he can do. Butler and Street are JAGs.

So to sum up the offense, we lack explosion and playmaking ability. The only positions I feel really comfortable with are #1 WR and OL.

DL: What a disappointment. I think Greg Hardy's rust and time off have caught up with him. I don't think he will be back. Lawrence and Gregory have to be listed as question marks. Tyrone Crawford has been a big let down. Hayden, Mincey, and J. Crawford are JAGs. They have been weak against the run and haven't really generated much of a pass rush. 27 sacks is near the bottom of the league. You could point to basically any player on this defensive line and say you will need to see a drastic improvement to get this team where they need to be next year.

LB: McClain probably won't be back. Sean Lee will get hurt. Anthony Hitchens has disappeared. Players like Gachkar are a dime a dozen. No real depth here.

CB: Claiborne has been slightly better this year, but hurt a lot, as usual. If he comes back, it will be on a minimum contract. Brandon Carr hasn't been good. Hopefully, Scandrick will come back to true form. We have removed a lot of the depth guys from this team and are left with basically only Terrance Mitchell.

S: The safety play has been terrible this year, outside of Byron Jones, when he is covering a TE. Wilcox has been god awful and needs to go. Barry Church has been disappointing, to say the least. I think Jones replaces Wilcox, but we still need an upgrade for church.

I look at this team, and I see a lot more problems than just a backup quarterback.

I'm sure you'll get a countless amount of replies breaking down your every thought, so I'll just give you one. I think Hitchens plays well and at times better than RoMac. I know he's not as big and freakishly athletic, but Ro disappears. At least Hitch plays doe start to finish. I love Lee, but he doesn't have much longer. Maybe we can talk Patrick Willis into coming to Dallas.

No this is a legitimate debate.
Im hopeful the back up QB is on the rooster
TE position needs to be considered I agree
We certainly will look for new talent at RB

I think Hardy is back but I dont care about Ro
take him or leave him, dont trust much

We certainly need some new DB help and this is the draft
to do that.
I want a 1tach DT assed like many here do

I can't argue with a whole lot of this, but I disagree about Brice Butler. Street they can move on from, but Butler should be on this roster. With a QB, that guy could be something. He has a great size to speed combo. Fits the model of what the Cowboys seem to look for and he hasn't shown himself over a huge sample size to just not have "it" like say Williams. Give him an off-season with Romo and if he has to play next year I think he could be a big time find.

I like Hitchens, but he has taken a big step back this year.

I think Butler will have a chance to make the roster, but he is a wildcard. Hopefully, he will continue to improve.

Butler was a 5 star recruit coming out of high school, so he has always had talent. My question is does he end up a Miles Austin type (flashes but always knicked up) or just someone you are always looking to up grade like Church or Hayden.

Austin is exactly who I see with him. Given the injury troubles Butler's had here already it's probably for the best and worst.

Most of the op is strictly knee jerk and preconceived notions. This summer it was we can't trust McFadden. Now it's so you trust him for two years. Next year it will be yea he has been fine but he has never blah blah whatever it is. The only problem on this team has been the Qb play, the 3rd down D and lack of turnovers. We do need to get a viable back up if Moore proves he is not it. One CB and one strong safety. The dl is fine and good enough to win. We could use a late round pick on a dt to push the roster. The linebackers are good. The ol is good even with free. But if the rookie and take it that is great. I agree about Dunbar. But he is a 3rd down back. I would like to get a force to be the lead back and move dmac to the 3rd down role but dmac is fine as the lead horse. Would have had well over 1000k this year if he had Romo and Dez the whole year. I look forward to next year.

Its too bad JG doesnt recognize that Witten has some limitations. I personally thought Marty B and Escobar were brought in to help compensate for some of that but sadly JG is too stubborn, or too stupid to figure out how to get these guys a few snaps here and there to run some of the routes Witten no longer can.

Jason's idea of getting younger guys involved is putting Whitehead in for Dez and running the ball.

Wow! So let's keep 4 O linemen and Dez and star over? Lol

I'm amazed that the OP is actually discrediting d law. He's had a great season, Gregory needs to put on weight but looks to be a menace in thr back field already. Hardy is hardy. Crawford has actually had a good year considering he has need surgery for 12 games. Hayden. Yeah can't say anything good about him. I think d liNE is good. Lb I agree with, dB is obviously the main issue here. This team is also ranked 6th against the pass. So who knows what's going on.

Extreme knee jerk. Half of these points are moving goal posts

Yet another fellow fan that gets it. I would also add "basic" coaching to that issues list.
