I think Tyron Smith, if healthy, will start

People just need to stop with the "Tyron should be the swing tackle" argument. When healthy, Tyron will play. Why? Because he's still the best OT on the team. You don't sit your best player just because he MIGHT get hurt. If he's healthy, he's one of the top 2-3 OT's in the entire NFL. If he get's hurt, you deal with it.

His restructured contract is incentive based, where he gets docked pay if he does get hurt. But Tyron will start. He will either start at LT or RT. Tyler will start. He will either start at LT or LG. The undrafted Terence Steele will either start at RT, or be the swing tackle. There is NO SCENARIO at all where Tyron Smith is the swing tackle. Either he's healthy and starts, or he's hurt, and the younger guys play. If Tyron gets hurt, then the Cowboys have 4 players on the roster who can fill in at the swing tackle position - Waletzko, Ball, Edoga and Richards. All but Waletzko will get time at both Guard and Tackle during training camp.

I think they will put Tyron back at LT. And he will rotate with Tyler. Tyler may kick inside at LG. Steele at RT. We are in good shape at O-Line until players start getting dinged up. We will see at training camp.

Yea I’ve never understand how anyone could think otherwise.

Sure - maybe he gets hurt again but you don’t just bench him in fear of that.

He’s the best LT on the roster so he needs to be out there.

I totally agree he will start, but I'm not so sure going into this year I would call him "the best OT on the team" any more. I think he starts more because Tyler can play LT or LG just as well which allows us to start all 3 and since Tyron is clearly more comfortable as an OT I think he plays LT or if you want to believe some of the rumors about Steele playing OG it could mean Tyron starting at RT. Regardless all 3 will start when healthy. Where matters less to me than who. Note - I don't think it is going to be the case that Steele plays LG all of a sudden, but it has been talked about.

If the plan was for Tyron to at best be a swing tackle we would have just cut him. His cap hit says he is starting. Whether he starts or dresses and sits we pay him that per game bonus and he is less likely to be hurt which would make his cap hit ridiculously large for a backup - part of the cap hit would hit next year not this year.

There are 64 starting Tackles in the league. He's in the top 5. But yeah, let's have him be the backup. We have a weird fanbase.
Lol. Like they want to save him for later. He got hurt in training camp last year. He needs very little practice. He shows up in shape every year. Why they had him trying to run down the field blocking a LB at his age for practice purposes didn’t make much sense. He knows the playbook. Keep him in shape and take the chains off and unleash the beast for game time.

That statement is only true if you go back in time say 5 years.

I don't have a problem with him being on the field if it makes your best 5 combination but acting as though we are going to get 20-21 games out of him is ignoring actual results from recent history.

Thinking you are going to get his best each week given his age & injury history is wishful thinking.

I do think sometimes the JG years here messed with some fans heads.."This guy can only play here...." it was such a hostage situation that some fans got stockholmes... MM looks at talent and says "These are our most talented guys, get them in spots and lets make it work "

I don’t think anything has been decided yet, and Stephen said it’s on MM to find the best five.

This really depends on Tyron’s health of course, but also front office desire to have Tyler at LT, his future position, right now, and not be moving him around. Personally I don’t think it will impede his progress as a player, but they don’t ask me.

There’s a good chance Tyron opens the season at RT for that reason, but I also can’t see starting Edoga at LG and leaving a healthy Tyron on the bench.

If you’ve been listening, the FO is very high on and proud of Steele. I expect him to get a second deal here and start at RT when healthy enough, which is yet another factor.

Waletzkos development (which we have heard good things on) is a factor as well.

Edit: I changed the wording above. I suppose that word has to be banned in an environment where people seem to enjoy calling each other names. Obviously I didn’t use it in that context. Apologies.

As he should. Just because the guy struggles with injuries doesn't mean he's not one of the best when healthy.

A part of me is looking forward to him retiring and going into the UFC, if he wants. He's a freak if nature. 300+lbs and he's ripped.

This argument is short-sighted when you take into account the importance of continuity and the development of Tyler Smith.

Yes, Tyron (on paper) is better that Tyler and LT. Though, even when playing LT he has posted poor games when returning from injury--he really needs 1-2 games to get back to himself after missing time.

So what will happen is that eventually Smith will exit the line up and you will begin the game of musical chairs which weakness the entire left side & stunts the development of your future LT.

Swing gives you excellent depth and maintains his heath.
