I wanna get physical, physical (mock)

Cutting Roy Williams makes absolute winning sense.......Does that make sense?

Its time to move on. The guy cant do anything right. We need a slot WR w/ return skills.

I think Marty and/or John Phillips can block out of the backfield. W/ how many touches our top 4 weapons need I wouldnt use a 4th and 5th on 2 players who will rarely see the field

Does Gronkowski barely see the field?

The $7+ million is money that has already been paid out to Roy, it's simply a figure the figure that would count against the cap would be accelerated if you cut Roy.

To be clear, you are not saving any of that money if you keep Roy or not, it's already been paid-out.

However, if you decide to keep Roy, you're going to pay him $5.1 million to be your #3 WR (#4 really when you factor in Jason Witten).

Keep in mind, there is no other team in the league that is paying its #3 WR anywhere close to $5 million.

If you let Williams go, you are saving yourself from paying $5.1 million to a glorified #3 receiver.

I don't care about what has been paid and what hasn't been paid. That's Jerry's money and he could do with it what he likes.

I care about the cap hit. What is the cap hit of signing versus keeping?

If there's a $7 million difference (that was reported by one of the beat writers I believe), I keep him and use that money to sign some OL.

I'm looking for hard, real numbers on the salary cap impact.

And this comes from someone who dislikes Roy Williams, thinks the trade was a disaster and wants to be rid of the guy as soon as possible.

Would love to have Matt Szcsur in this draft.

Here is what I was referring to:

His base salary is $5.1 million next season and his salary cap hit is roughly $9.4 million. But he has three years left on his deal and if the Cowboys cut him it would cost them $12.9 million against the 2011 cap.

http://sportsblogs.star-telegram.co...-the-2010-disappointment-with-their-jobs.html

So, if that is accurate, I guess the reality is that you'd be out an extra $3.5 million of cap space if you cut him.

That could still be an OL starter.

Those numbers make me sad.

Jerry and company needs to do a better job scouting other teams players and our own. Roy has been a bust since we got him. He is getting paid like a bonifide receiver such as T.O., andre johnson or even miles and he can't even hold none of their jocks. Cowboys blew alot of money in him and idk what happen to Barber. He just sucked this year. Maybe next year (unless he is cut) he gets better due to being more physical practices..idk.

I'm tempted to give Barber one more year to see if he can get back to that guy who just dominated near the goal line and was the closer in the 4th quarter.

Don't even give choice 3rd down duties. Give that to Barber to keep him in the flow and for pass protection abilities (which need brushing up).

Let me simplify:

You keep Roy and it's $5.1 million base salary + a portion of the $7 million against the salary cap if the Cowboys choose to keep him in 2011.

If they cut Roy it will count roughly $7 million against the cap because the bonus money that is gauranteed to Roy is accelerated in one lump sum to Roy. However, they don't owe him the $5.1 million in base salary.

Either way, that $7 million is gauranteed money Roy is going to get. Keeping him around this year for $5.1 million in order to just spread that $7 million a bit further is bad business.

You are not saving money by keeping Roy around.

That seems to be Garrett's theme.

Cut: Colombo, Barber (maybe)

Sign: Spears, Kosier, Sensy, Free

1) Gabe Carimi RT Wisconsin (trade down 5 or so spots and pick up a 3)

2) Mike Pouncey RG Florida (Wiz if he's there)

3a) Deuta Williams FS North Carolina

3b) John Moffett LG Wisconsin

4) Owen Marecic FB Stanford

5) Evan Royster RB Penn State

6) Mike Mohamed ILB Cal - Plays in 3-4 at Cal. Back up WILB who will compete for nickel. Best attribute is pass coverage.

7) Mike Blance DE Aubura

Carimi starts year one, Pouncey year 2, Moffett year 2 or 3.

I'd take it, especially the first 3 rounds.

I don't want to draft a FB as I happen to like Gronk, despite the fact that he got our franchise QB killed. Give him time.

I am having a really hard time pinning down when Pouncey will go, I've seen him everywhere from late 1st to late 3rd.

I'm not as high on Williams at both but I was a big fan of Patrick Chung coming out, I can't imagine Williams is much worse so maybe I just haven't seen enough of him.

Sucks he got hurt in his bowl game as I planned to watch him there.

Again, I don't care about money out of Jerry's pocket. I'm concerned with the salary cap number. I have a pretty good understanding of how the salary cap and bonus acceleration works. If you have contract details, that will help immensely.

I understand his base salary for next year is $5.1 million.

Where is the $7 million coming from? Is that the guaranteed bonus he for next year? What about the rest of the bonus money he's received? That also accelerates into the salary cap number.

According to Star Telegram, his cap number is 12.9 million if he is cut. That doesn't jive with what you are saying, so I'd like to understand the true salary cap hit if he is cut.

Based upon their blurb, his yearly bonus impact to the cap is approximately 4.3 million. With three years remaining, that is how they came up with a 12.9 million cap hit.

Not sure if this will help, but here ya go (from rotoworld):

10/19/2008: Signed a six-year, $54 million contract.

The deal contains $26.6085 million guaranteed, including a $10 million option bonus in the second year and $2 million of Williams' 2010 base salary.

2010: $3,452,629 (+ $9.5 million guaranteed option bonus)
2011: $5,109,971
2012: $6.802 million
2013: $8.498 million (Voidable Years)
2014: $9 million
2015: Free Agent

There was a discussion I was involved in a few days ago regarding the $12.9 million Calvin Watkins said was due Roy W. if the Cowboys cut him this offseason. I contended that info was wrong.. Ironically, Watkins had another article just a few days ago that conflicted with his other article.

If you add up the base salary and bonus money paid to Roy in 2010 ($3.4 + $9.5 million) it adds up to the noted $12.9 million Watkins mentioned. However, I think Watkins incorrectly stated that money would be due to Roy if the Cowboys cut Roy this offseason. I'm of the understanding that amount has already been paid out.

Hmm, probably need an expert like Adam to weigh in.

I'd assume option bonuses are still considered some sort of signing bonus and those are prorated over the life of the contract.

Based upon this, it looks like there is at least 19.5 million in bonuses that could potentially accelerate.

It looks like it may be getting close to the break even point on the contract of cutting him.

I'd be for it. What a terrible trade.

Not sure where you're getting $19.5 million in bonus money to be paid?

I don't think it's anywhere near that amount. My best guess is that if his contract is like most other players; he received a large chunk of bonus money upfront the day he signed (ie. signing bonus), the remainder was prorated throughout the extent of his contract.

If that is the case, he was just paid a $9.5 million bonus in 2010, so I wouldn't expect him to be owed more than $7-9 million in guaranteed bonus money.

But yes, it was a horrendous trade and contract.

4 Dwayne Harris, WR/KR, East Carolina 6-0 #205 Good hands, doesn't drop a lot of balls... Reliable player, comes up big on third downs and at the end of games... Good route runner, likes to work the middle of the field, does most of his work within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage... Solid burst off the line of scrimmage, can get separation in man coverage... Cuts well, very elusive in the open field... Hard runner, tough guy to bring down when he gets going, gets a lot of yards after the catch

Shorts, Harris and Sczur (spelling) are all the type of WR/PR/KR we need.

I think Shorts is better than the other two. Significantly beter than Sczur and a skosh better than Harris.

and what no CB ?

I think we need some draft pick

not a big fan of Marecic

other wise I could live with it

Fixing OL and FS are far bigger needs than CB. It's not like we just need 1 OL. We need 3-4 for now and the near future.

When you kick Ball out of the FS spot with Deunta you can move Ball back to CB. Good 4th to 5th CB. Newman, Jenkins, Scan, Ball, McCann. Don't forget about AOA.

Agree about Alan Ball, the switch to FS was a failure, but he still is quality depth at CB; no need to cut him alltogether.

I'm not as high on AOA as others are. My gut tells me he'll still be a long way from competing for significant playing time next season.

McCann is an anomaly; he returned a punt return for a fluke touchdown, but otherwise was ho-hum on both KR/PR and a bit inconsistent on ball security when fielding punts.

On defense, he had that great pick-six at the goal line but was otherwise torched that game, as well as with the other games he played in. Long story short, I wouldn't gaurantee him a spot on next year's roster. I'm sure he'll improve going into his second season. Let him compete in camp and see what happens.

on Carimi, Pouncey and Moffitt start from day 1 in my opinion. I do not like waiting for players. If their talented you plug them in from day 1 and let them learn as they go......it's the best way to be. I actually like starting alot of young players, even though they make mistakes they play with more fire than old, overpaid vets. This is the main reason Jimmy Johnson was GREAT. He wasn't afraid to run with youth.

Any bonus received up front would be prorated against the entire contract from a salary cap standpoint.

I believe any additional bonuses are also prorated against the years remaining.

19.5 was from the 10 million mentioned as option bonus in the second year and 9.5 in 2010.

There aren't many teams that are doing cartwheels over their 4th, 5th and 6th CB's.

I'll take our CB depth over our OL depth though.

AOA is an unknown but he has all the physical tools you could want in a CB or FS.

Time to put this OL issue to bed once and for all.
