If by "reckoned with" you mean 26th in the league in scoring and 29th in passing, he did just that. They were 30th in the league in scoring the year before. So Norv singlehandedly skyrocketed them up four spots to 26th. That and spending a lot of money on free agents and the sixth pick of the draft on Vernon Davis. And playing in the conference with the worst collection of defenses in the NFL.

What's most unfair is how people point to his failures at Oakland. Folks, that's unfair. Oakland hasn't won anything .. other than going to a Superbowl two years before Norv took over and a tuck rule away from going to a second one .. .but other than that, you can't win there. Look at what he was dealing with there. A bunch of fans who still dwell in the "glory days". A meddling owner/GM who forced staff on him. An egotistical, primadonna WR who is given free reign over the organization. You can't win in that type of environment. Totally different from what he would have in Dallas.

The guy knows offense. He is only 54 years old. He has been around the league enough to hire a quality DC. He knows what it is like to coach in Dallas.

He really stunk it up in those two cities. So, of course, he is suddenly a viable candidate for HC? Please.


Norv sealed his fate with Jerra long ago when he and Jimma's assistants had disdain for Jerra. Norv was among the smirkers at a table with Jimma present when the owner was dissed and then Jerra went to the bar to make his "50 coaches could coach the Dallas Cowboys" statement.

I was going to give you more credit than to think you'd resort to shoddy stats....It's not where SF started the season, but where they were at the end of one year with NOrv...to say anything other than Smith looked good and Gore looked great and the 49'ers could play offensively with most teams by the end of this year is just stupid....Their defense was awful, and that also affects offensive stats according to those on this forum.

I would prefer Norv over dufus Stoops or many of the other coordinators who just happen to also be on a strong team and have no HC experience....I'm not really sure why the guy in Chicago is getting so much credit for Lovie Smith's defense....Lovie is the defensive guy.

Witten is already more involved than Jay Novacek ever was.

I definitely don't agree with that...stats again are misleading....Novachek was Troy's security blanket and the guy he always went to when the rush got to him...the offense was set up for him to be out there all the time, not pass blocking like Witten.
