I wish I could believe otherwise - but no great HC is headed here

Many Cowboys fans are discussing some big names who could be our next head coach. I’ve done some of that dreaming too. But at this point unless the man in charge makes MAJOR changes in how he operates, there will be no new coach that can rescue this mess. Because the owner won’t allow it.

I wish I could believe there is a new and better head coach headed to Dallas for 2025. But I just can’t. As long as Jerry Jones is breathing he will never hire a head coach that would or could upstage him.

To support this belief, here are some key points that have seemed obvious to me for years:
  • Jerry Jones does not think like a normal owner or GM who wants to win a championship so badly he’s willing to hire a great HC, pay him handsomely, and support that HC by backing off. He does not want to win bad enough to change. Period.
  • Jerry hires HCs not based on who gives us the best chance to win a championship but who makes him feel comfortable. (Your honor I submit these names into evidence: Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, Wade Phillips, and Jason Garrett)
  • The job of being HC of the Dallas Cowboys is not attractive to a HC who wants to do what normal HCs do in the NFL; like have control of the locker room, select his assistants, decide who starts, control the message to the press, etc.
I do not believe this job is attractive to any self respecting up and coming HC who is young and rising star (like Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn) because (a) Jerry doesn’t want to be upstaged ever again by a young star coach like Jimmy Johnson. (b)He will not change.

Our only hope rests in any of these things happening:
  1. The Jones kids are tired of this 3 decade treadmill and want real changes. They pressure the old man to hire someone who can and will change this culture and force the old man to back off after the hire.
  2. Jerry himself is tired of this cycle and decides to go after a coach that he will pay well, gives him freedom to run the team like a normal HC, and allows him to transform his culture.
  3. Things stay exactly the same and we somehow just flat get lucky with whoever is hired.
Of these scenarios (all of which are unlikely) I hope scenario 1 could somehow, some way happen. Maybe Stephen, Charlotte and Jerry Jr have had enough of this wash, rinse repeat cycle of playoff irrelevance and put some pressure on Daddy to change.

My friends, without major change at the top, we cannot expect different results.

I don’t care who is brought in here, they aren’t winning.

The HC after the next HC is when we can think about starting to head in the right direction.

The culprit is nothing more than Jerrys ego. Has to be a celebrity and prove to the world that he can do what Jimmy Johnson did. Too bad that ship is already way gone.

the front office dynamic of the owner being the gm would swallow up guys like johnson or slowik.
i'm gonna keep saying it.
the only way for a hc to have success here is to figure "around" jerry.
about the most success he'll have is what mccarthy has had...double digit wins, division titles, make playoffs, get a wc win now and then.
a veteran, tough minded hc who can/will coach "around" jerry.
small list of guys who could/would do that.

That is a good point that ship has sailed and jerry cant see or accept that.
Just this year he stated that he is by far the best possible GM for the cowboys lol.
He lives in his own fantasy world.

Well said and Jerry is so predictable. We can’t have a strong, big name hc cause it will mk our beloved fuhrer uncomfortable. So we are left with B type personality “kitties” who are soft, punching bags for Jerry to exercise his immense skills at head coaching while keeping a soft, scapegoat as the fall guy head coach. Jerry will hire staff for the next head coach often before they are even hired. It’s as ***** up as a football bat, but here we’re are three decades later wondering if we will ever win another div playoff game.

Lather, rinse, repeat as Jerry fires another hc without the power to hire and fire. He hires another Jones “whipping boy” who is willing to be Jerry’s itch and willing to kiss their head coaching career goodbye to sign w Dallas.

There is no hc alive that can come in here and be extremely handicapped by all the BS the Jones boys put their so-called head coach.

No, I stopped being fooled by a new hc hire decades ago. I’ve seen this movie over and over again. It literally makes zero difference who Jerry hires since he will emasculate the new hc like all the other hc since Jimmy. Jimmy had power and we won three with the talent he assembled. But no other hc has ever had the power Jimmy had and we will never make a deep playoff run under the iron fist of the Jones family.

BULLET!
If Red Jesus (Jason Garrett) was here for 10 years, MM has plenty of time remaining.
wow dont say that !!
I want all new HC and staff. I prefer one HC, but anything new would make it more interesting.

We have seen mike and staff, and I am now bored with them and their stupidity.

I think plenty of coaches would come here, but we all know Jerry isn't going to bring in someone who will overshadow him and get the credit if they turn the team around.

He only hired one real head coach since Jimmy left and that was only because he thought he needed a big name like Bill Parcells to ensure his stadium deal got approved.

Finance, marketing and doing it his way are all way more important than winning, no matter how many times he says otherwise.

He won't because he thinks he is winning. Top of the Forbes list, stadium full each game, top of merch sales, top of tv ratings....

Jerry has all the proof he needs that he is the smartest person in the room.

Bob I wish I could believe otherwise as well, but I can't see it happening. If we had a good situation for a HC here with Jerry, I think good coaches would be standing in line to coach the Dallas Cowboys. But we don't have a good coaching situation so they're not standing in line and I don't blame 'em.

Any young coach worth his salt and with a sack of brass balls, will jump at the chance. Coaches have a lot of confidence and swagger....they believe they are the one. If they don't want this challenge, we definitely, shouldn't want them.

Really? There will be seven or eight teams, minimum, that will have a new head coach for 2025. Who do you think will be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys next season? A name, not a colorful description (salt and brass balls). Keep in mind compensation carries a lot of weight for coaches, young ones and otherwise, when accepting a job offer.

Two Serious questions: you said “plenty of coaches would come here”…so
  1. Who would be on that list of “plenty of coaches” who would want to be here under Jerry’s way of doing things?
  2. Why would any self respecting HC who wants all the normal things HCs do like hire his own assistants, have control of locker room discipline and has control of the message to the press like 31 other HCs want…why would they want to come to Dallas where they would not have that control?
One other thing…why come here when JJ pays his head coaches in the lower half of what HCs make? Not only have to put up with JJ but for less money?

I don't know if I agree with you on this. I don't think any proven winning head coach will come here because Jerry/Stephen wouldn't be willing to give up the control it would take to get one. Offensive and defensive coordinators are looking for the next step up and usually jump at the chance to take it. They know that things can happen the next season (such as our injury problems) that can knock them off the hot candidate list. Plus, most coaches have egos just like the players and believe in their abilities. And they see football as a business, not like we do as fans.

Coaches are going to pick the best situation. Realistically, they know this was a 12-5 team the previous three seasons and a slew of injuries have helped it not come close to that this year. They know they have one of the top defenders in football in Parsons, two former All-Pro corners in Diggs and Bland, one of the top receivers in the game and a quarterback, whether you like him or not, who has been top 10 most of his career and was an MVP contender just last year. Plus, there's Brandon Aubrey. Who wouldn't want to coach the best kicker the game has ever seen.
