If available, should Derek Barnett be the Cowboys’ pick at No. 28?

The Dallas Cowboys need a pass-rusher, desperately. It’s not a secret, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it clear that it will be one of their primary focuses this offseason (Via the Dallas Morning News).

“If I have a chance to bring one of these premiere pass rushers, one of these war daddies that takes two to block, if I have a chance to get a player like that – I would…it’s not a question of that. It’s a question of where is he? And who gives him up if he’s a veteran, or where is he in the draft, or where is he anywhere? So, yeah we do need pressure. We’re going to try to do something about it.”

On a team that was a couple of inches away from making the NFC Championship Game, a revamped pass rush could get them over the hump next season.

One of those players who has been brought up as a possible ‘war daddy’ is Derek Barnett.

The Tennessee defensive end is one of the most productive players to come out of college in quite some time. In three years with the Volunteers, he accumulated 198 tackles, 52 for loss and 32 sacks.

While those numbers are fantastic, one has to be cognizant of placing too much weight on production in college. Instead, it is important to contextualize the production by watching his tape and evaluating his skill set.

In Barnett’s case, the question becomes whether the avenues that he used to produce at such a high level are translatable in the NFL, which is where his evaluation gets a little murky.

Listed at 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds, Barnett has a squatty frame with great flexibility in his lower half.

Barnett uses his pliability to sharpen the corner while executing his speed rush. Barnett used this rush to wreak havoc on opposing offenses throughout his career. Here’s a great example:

Derek Barnett ER/DE Tennessee

TALENT
ROUND
3

STRENGTHS

He has good speed, and he shows solid techniques and effort on every play. He seems instinctive, and shows the ability to anticipate play in order to make impact plays. He is disruptive on passing downs and is solid against the run.He has excellent strength, quickness, and the ability to spit double teams in order to get into the backfield. Derek has enough ability to play as an Edge Rusher in a 3/4 defense or DE in a 4/3. The big question is, for the next level, what is the best position and style of defense Derek can play in for him to impact?

CONCERNS
The “what position” question is based off Derek’s lack of change of direction skills and lateral agility. He seems to be a straight line player who doesn’t have the size to play inside. As an edge rusher he’s disruptive but struggles to finish plays. If he wants to stay on the outside he has to learn more power rush moves, and how to set up offensive tackles.

BOTTOM LINE
What I see on film for the next level is a developmental player who could become a core player in the NFL very much like Patriots Rob Ninkovich. Derek has a lot of work to do and has to be in the right system with the right coaches but I think the potential is there. He can become a player who is smart and a leader and a player that if you make a mistake when blocking him makes an impact play.

Yes they should. M. Garrett, D. Barnett, and T.Williams are the 3 best pure edge rushers in this draft.

He's the fourth-best DL in the draft. He plays DE. We need DE. I don't care if he isn't a RE prototype, he's a very good pass rusher.

Barnett if there is the pick IMO. I would even overlook players at other positions that are better. We need a DE. I think he has a high floor and can be a double digit sack guy.

I take him over Ross, Humphrey, Peppers, Njoku and Tim WIlliams. Even though I think all 5 of them have higher ceilings.

Yes, yes the Cowboys should. Barnett has the best pass rush moves along with the best hand usage of any edge player in this draft in my opinion. Not everyone needs to be a track star to get to the QB. And a pass rusher can have all the speed in the world, but if they aren't able to dip and bend around the corner the way Barnett can the speed won't matter because those type of guys usually run past the QB in an arc rather than turning the corner.

out of that list, only Tim Williams is the better and even at that hes not a 3 down player like Barnett.

I have him behind Garrett, Allen, McDowell and Charlton, but there's a solid chance none of them are around at 28 so... yes. I do think he's a top 30 player. Like many have said you're not likely to find a flawless pass rushing prospect so low.

I have him ahead of Taco and Mcdowell.

I have Tim Williams no 3 but that would be contingent on the teams investigation into him regarding off the field stuff.

I have Barnett no 4 and he is the last of the elite DE's that I covet.

I like some of the others like Taco and Harris and Mckinley but not as much.

I hope his Combine really sucks. The good thing is, I don't think teams will see him as an OLB so that helps. Williams, McKinley, and even maybe Taco will be graded higher than him at OLB.

If he's there at 28, hell to the yes.
