If available, should Derek Barnett be the Cowboys’ pick at No. 28?

Barnett looks like exactly like a Dallas DE. Athletic, strong dude who can play both end spots and at 20 years old has nothing but upside.
Doubt he's there at 28. Seriously doubt it.
Exactly. I doubt he is there at 28. If we are serious about the guy, it's gonna have be a trade up of about 5-6 spots. I'd rather sit tight and grab Harris (if he's there).

I have him ahead of Taco and Mcdowell.

I have Tim Williams no 3 but that would be contingent on the teams investigation into him regarding off the field stuff.

I have Barnett no 4 and he is the last of the elite DE's that I covet.

I like some of the others like Taco and Harris and Mckinley but not as much.

100% agree on all this

I really, really like Barnett. If he is anywhere near the Dallas pick, they need to go get him. He is a couple/three notches above Harris, McKinley, etc. IMO.

Barnett is just a good football player. Taco has more potential but if both were there at 28, I’d go with Barnett 10 out of 10 times. McKinley isn’t really a DE IMO and again, I’d take the Vol 10 out of 10 times.

I realize that athleticism is important and that Barnett isn’t the most athletic specimen… but his production in the best conference in all of college football and the manner in which he played his whole career there in Tenn. Is simply overwhelming. It really was quite remarkable.

I’ve seen too many Terell Suggs and too many Mike Mamulas in my time watching the NFL and the draft to overlook what Barnett did in the SEC. Suggs combine was horrific yet he continued to do in the NFL what he had done to the PAC 10.

That doesn’t happen every time for every slow timing edge rusher… but it does happen a lot. Just like Aaron Donald was too small, too short and his arms were way too short for him to do well in the NFL. All you had to do was watch his college film and you knew the guy was a terrific football player.

Like I said… Barnett is a really good football player. I like him a whole lot.

Exactly.

This is the guy we need to target. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility either.
Unfortunately for us, I think he goes a good bit earlier than the 28th pick.

I've certainly been wrong before and I hope I am here... but I think someone takes him way earlier than we pick.

Having said that, it is still crazy early in the draft process and it is difficult to know what is going to happen.

if we trade romo then i would use that pick to trade up to get him.barnett garrett and lawson are going to make an immediate impact at de because they have advanced techinque.harris and mckinnley will take time to learn.

Calling it now....

A Claiborne type trade up w/ Cincinnati @ 1/9....I might cost us our 2nd rounder....but it might be worth it.

But then again...just played w/ a draft pick calculator...and the trade doesn't even come close to being even. We could trade our entire draft...and it still wouldn't be enough to get into the top ten.:(

1/9 = 1350

1/28
2/60
3/92
4/133= 1131.5

Tak McKinley has been compared to Vic Beasley. That's the kind of player I want. If he's injured, and he drops, good for us.

Taco will be the best pass rusher from this draft. Barnett isn't a bad player, but he will never be a reliable double digit sack guy. He doesn't have the explosive first step, the length or the agility. He's essentially the same player as David Irving (but smaller) and Tank. No thanks.

He's essentially the same player as two very different players?

Its funny i feel that Taco is a more boom or bust player,if he had Barnetts pass rush skills then he would go top 5 .

I'm guessing you've never even watched him play. Watch at 6:25 and specifically 7:20 and then maybe revise your comment.

Here it is at 10:05 mark against Alabama and Cam Robinson as well.
