If it was still the early nineties would Dak or Mahomes be playing in the NFL?

They didn't protect the quarterback position until the late nineties/2000's.
Neither Dak nor Mahomes could've stood up to the punishment Aikman took.
The quarterback in today's NFL really does wear a skirt, and if he gets hit he is rewarded with a first down.
You actually do not know this. You have no point of comparison because today's QB can only play under today's rules. Today's QB didn't make the rules, they play under the rules the league made. But one thing you can be sure of is talented QB's like Mahomes would be playing, and for all you know they would be able to adapt just fine to whatever rules were in place

If the shoe fits....
But it's not just about Dak.
Over all, the NFL has turned what once was professional football into a touch football league.
And that's the point.
It's not professional football anymore.
You have no point. You may have had a semblance of point if you had maintained none of the names you posted would have become starting quarterbacks at that time. No. You said, and I repeat:

Would they even have been drafted?

And you base that... whatever you want to call it on the quarterback examples of:

Patrick Mahomes
Lamar Jackson
Bryce Young
Jalen Hurts and *drumroll*
Dak Prescott

You have not thought your claim out thoroughly. At worst, NFL franchises, from the 1980s forward, would have taken a chance on each of your suggestions as backup quarterbacks. By the way, James Harris and Doug Williams say hello from the 1970's.

I will reiterate. Your open-ended question was, "Would they even have been drafted?" You posted that question despite the fact NFL teams have drafted players with less talent than those five college quarterbacks for targeted NON-quarterback positions.

You literally, LITERALLY, follow a team that selected Isaiah Stanback, who played the majority of his Washington Huskies career as a quarterback, and targeted him in the fourth round solely as a wide receiver at the professional level.

Stanback did not have the quarterback talent of anyone on your list, including Prescott. Stanback was a mid-round selection. Yet, you believe all five of the guys on your list would have gone through all seven rounds without getting picked. Period.

The NFL draft has been around for many decades. How long have you been paying attention to it?

I think I will put my moderator hat on from this point forward. Hopefully, Lucy will not yank it off my head. AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH!

Go look back at the QB's drafted between 1990-94. There was a real dry spell there in terms of talent. Guys like Jeff George, Andre Ware, David Klingler, Rick Mirer, Heath Shuler, etc. all were supposed to be franchise saviors and turned out to be duds, journeymen, or both. The fact Drew Bledsoe was probably the best QB drafted from that era sums it up.

So, to answer the OP question, yes. Dak and Mahomes would have had no problem playing back then.

Still, it's true.
They don't have to worry about being hit because they are protected. A lot of 14 year olds could do what they do and be more accurate than some of these guys.
The position has changed and therefore the salary requirements should change. Not as much is asked of the quarterback now, so he shouldn't be paid as much.
you are now dug in, except you are in quick sand (or quick shiet, whichever) and sinking...sinking fast, now up to your nose.

14 years being able to play and what these guys do. is there any statement more stupid, more dumb than this.

wow....wow...no wonder you are divorved twice and your kids refuse to talk to you...
and off the band wagon...again

LOL. ok, let me put you and Allen in the same room. lock the door and you tell him that.

oh, wait, what's that brown stuff coming down your pant legs!!! :lmao:

Wow. Jeff George. That guy had a lot of talent, he really did. But something held him back. Maybe he did.

It was his attitude for sure. But he threw some of the best deep balls I have ever seen, even though I was really young when he played.

Say what you like, but with the way the NFL has changed the rules the quarterback position is nowhere near what it once was.
There are still some warriors out there, but that isn't required to play quarterback in today's NFL.
With all of the game film showing how players go out of their way to avoid hitting the quarterback, one can only assume that the NFL has made the position soft.
Or, has rigged the games.
Or both.

Dude, stop! Mahomes gets hit all the time and is tougher than nails. Hes a generational player. Stop this nonsense! It’s embarrassing

Yeah, keep believing that.
Meanwhile, there's video of defenders purposely missing him.
Keep being the kind of fan the NFL wants.
Bet your house on a game.

Lot of things going on in this thread first DAk and Patrick mahomes are not on the same plane to be compared.

It's not so much about quarterback talent as it is about being able to protect yourself well quarterbacks back then put just concentrate on being a great quarterback they had to be very much concerned with protecting themselves .
Today the rules have made it much easier for quarterbacks to just concentrate on the mechanics of being a good quarterback without having to have eyes in the back of their head for fear of being killed.
Dak seems to have trouble protecting himself now and keeping from getting injured it wouldn't improve if he was playing in the 90s.
Patrick mahomes is a smarter player able to improvise and keep track of a lot of things going on at once and I think would be fine playing in any generation.
All that said I'd love to have seen Roger Staubach playing in today's game could have probably played till he was 45 the hits and abuse he took back then today he would be able to be protected and dominate the game

The point is that quarterbacks are paid to play a position that was once revered.
Now it's just a touch football league, but they still get paid based on what is not required of them anymore.
I don't think most of the guys I named would have even been drafted back then.
You’re wrong, talent gets drafted, lots of shorter, or scrambling QBs played years ago l guess you haven’t been watching football long enough to understand that. QB is still the premier position and most important. Talent like Jackson, MaHomes Allen, and others would play well. Lol
