and this BS happens every generation. I heard it back in the 90s, where WRs were being protected, not like the 70s when DBs would tackle them with no penalties!!!!

perhaps we should listen to my Dad who is 93, talk about NFL back in his time. when helmets were leather and didn't have face guards....when nothing was considered dirty hit or tackling...I mean those guys were tough....you think people in the 90s were tough...come on....back in the 50s and 60s was when they played real football, those 90s players were nothing but sissy's and none of them would last a season...

and then comes the next generation and they claim the previous generation had it tougher.... bet when rules change 20 years from now, some idiot will say, hey back in 2020s they played real football, not the sissy stuff they play now!!!! it never fails

You don't remember how blaming Chaz Green and Garrett was the cause de jour here at the Zone to explain the funk Prescott went in for the next few games, at least?

His normal struggles would have been magnified against the way defense was played in that era, even before he started getting pounded like he has never been throughout his career. I just don't see him surviving against that Philly pass rush that pounded Aikman to the edge of oblivion in his early days.

No. That is not what you said in reference to this specific tangent of the thread. I responded to you saying this, "Not one of those guys are more talented then Rodgers or Mahomes." The thread was never about talent comparisons. It was always about the difference in the way defense is allowed to be played and how QB's did take more of a beating back then. Nobody said current QB's were less talented than their predecessors.

I agree that Mahomes would have been fine in any era. I'm not so sure about Jackson. His style gets him gets him beat up pretty good in today's league. Not saying he's not tough, but he would take more of a beating just from his style of play.

Yeah, Hurts, Lamar, Mahomes woulda have been starting QBs back then, and they still would have run. Steve Young ran like a fool, and Tarkenton, Randall Cunningham, none of whom were were built like Hurts or Cam Newton, all ran and flourished.

Dak could have played too...but he just would have sucked. But there were plenty of sucky QBs even in the 80s or 90s that choked in the playoffs, so Dak could have been one of them!

thats a hard call on Jackson, his big plays might be even bigger but the hits wouldn't be monitored so the defense would for sure be trying to take him out because back then he would be faster than 99% of the DB's...Now the LB's and some DL's can run with him but they have to watch how they hit him.

Love to see how he would have responded to pass rushers being able to follow through on the hit within a step and to his bread and butter shifty slot receivers getting legally head hunted by some of those assassins at safety.

late hits would be the gameplan for sure he would be on his back every play no doubt. Both the Dallas and Pitt D's of the 70's would've glady taken the penalty to let him know how the day was gonna go.

Well, I think Dak could have played in those olden day because he is big and strong, so if any of those D's back then get a chance to hit him it would not have fazed him because he is so big and strong.

good points but again Kyler is small in todays NFL also, probably be harder to get to in that era since he would be the quickest player on the field by a large margin...but if he was too stupid to not take hits then yeah he would be hurt soon because no way the DC's back then would want him running around. Hard to say what would happen to those guys because the speed on D was not what it is today but if they could get too you they would for sure try and leave a mark.

Yes. He goofed mentally. As in the pressure got to him and caused him to lose focus and make mental goofs. Mental toughness is as important as physical toughness and often the two go hand in hand.

One of the differences between you and I is that you seem to be a very literal interpreter of what you read, whereas I tend to consider the overall context of the situation and leave a bit of room for interpretation.

Since the entire discussion was centered around how the differences in the defenses would affect the new QB's if they had to play against them I gave the benefit of the doubt on the talent reference and understood it to be synonymous with toughness in that instance. I very well could be wrong about that.

Back then the NFL was still real football. Quarterbacks had to be willing to take a hit while standing in and delivering a perfect pass that often made the difference in the game(s).
Not just Dak or Mahomes; would Lamar Jackson, Bryce Young, Jalen Hurts or any of the more mobile quarterbacks in today's game be playing still?
Would they even have been drafted?
In the NFL of the early nineties and before, the physical toll playing quarterback took on players caused teams to shy away from smaller guys because their mobility would disappear as the hits they took began to take their toll on them.
Nowadays the NFL penalizes any player who gets too physical when tackling a quarterback so much that they are basically playing touch football.
So why are quarterbacks still considered the highest valued player on a team?
Let's face it; the quarterback is now the easiest position to play in the NFL.
