Brian Schottenheimer. Hes working with the Cowboys already, was OC for some of the best offensive teams Seattle had, and have to believe he has a huge influence on the Cowboys run game this year. I think he may end up a dark horse HC candidate for Denver though.

i forgot about Schottenheimer being here as an consultant this year.

Some of the same rumors that have Quinn departing to be new HC Broncos, also have Schottenheimer going along with Quinn to be his OC there.
But if the Cowboys team sees an immediate OC role promotion to the OC experienced Schottenheimer, they could deny a team asking for permission to speak to Schott.

.....then there is an "OC in Training Program".......but how would Cooper bypass the QB Coach position that Air Coryell Jr went through?
He ticks all the boxes????........what boxes would be intriquing? Hmmm!!
This is Jerry's world, so trying to make sense of it is wasted effort.

The boxes are, in order of importance...
Jerry guy. i.e. Jerry found the diamond everyone else passed over. - Check.
Some chatter that validates the decision. Rush has been talked up as a football guy with a future in coaching. - Check.
Cheap. Rush is young and inexperienced. Will work for food. - Check

The timeline is perfect for this to happen. McCarthy finishes his contract giving Jerry two more years to implement the plan. Rush begins as QB coach next season or the following season giving him one or two seasons to go through OC boot camp. Promotions happen at the end of the 24/25 season, when McCarthy's contract is up.

I'm not saying this is the right direction. I'm just saying Jerry probably thinks it is, for reasons that don't make sense.

My analogy from this......so Jerry gives the "son" keys to the show-room Porsche to learn how to drive, while the dusty & dented Toyota sits over there only needing a new battery to learn how to drive with. It's coming.

Keep in mind, MM only has two more years on his deal. The standard contract for OC is generally three years. It's also a job Jerry and Stephen will likely have strong input ....coz of their investment in Dak. It's next to impossible to give a name but I personally think this could be his last year regardless of what happens post-season. Major decision on an extension for Dak coming up. Have we seen his ceiling? Can he take his game to another level under a different OC and/or scheme? These are fair questions considering any restructuring of his deal will likely cost $46-50M.

As for OP's question....it would not surprise me to see the job split between and running and passing coordinator with MM calling plays.

- If Cowboys decide to move on from McCarthy,,.. that opens the Sean Payton door -which leads to not only the Payton offense, but also Payton preferring his
own choice of asst. coaches.
That’s gonna be significantly big because that impacts key leftover asst. coaches such as OL coach Joe Philbin.

- Cowboys have been reportedly known to have an influential say in incoming or exiting out coaches.....
ala 'No " to HC interviewee Norv Turner wanting to hire DC Ted Cottrell...and with McCarthy keeping Kellen, and forced firing of Mike Nolan, and hire of Dan Quinn.

- Just me, but the vibe I get and knowing how the Jones’ like to use their “ influential” muscle, I believe if hired on, Payton will be made to keep certain asst coaches,
get rid/change out certain assts. - just as McCarthy was influenced” (forced?) to with keeping Kellen Moore ?

i truly believe should Cowboys depart from MM,. .. it’s gonna come down to Payton or Quinn. It's not gonna be a chance of a young assistant, new hired gun (ala Nathan Hackett)
and it's ridiculous to think college HC(ala Rule, Urban or Klingbury) .. Cowboys gonna want to hit the ground running
Just as we did with hiring on an very well established, proven HC in McCarthy, the Cowboys are gonna want a repeat with the next HC hire.
Coaches that have won or been in a SB.

Exactly.

Reason being, Jerry can not have his son driving around town in a clapped out old Toyota.

It's not about the son, or the car. It's about Jerry.

- As far as Dak, flat simple the Cowboys organization believe in Dak. He’s will be here until vast injury or age decide differently.

- Hit a ceiling ? We’re already among the very top, if not at the top in team offensive categories. And that’s not just this year.
His leadership persona, drive and skill set means the world to these players, coaches and upper management.

- I'm already quite convinced that the team decision has already made on Dak’s next record breaking contract. I’m not even fretting that.
Some keep forgetting that the NFL’s team cap is going to escalate when the new TV contract deal kicks in.
And restructuring his contract simply moves money around to other areas and restructures, to make room for current or future team cap.
It doesn’t mean it’s a pay cut.

My 2 cents from sitting on the porch (if there was warm weather) .......having money don't necessarily make you smart, but instead......it sometimes allow you to do more dumb things and withstand the consequences.

There are a few keyboard experts on this very forum I love to see try to run an offense.

We may go 0-17, but the entertainment value would be priceless

This. Or something similar. Bottomline is Big Mac has no problem taking more control over the offense if he doesn't trust any successor.

Here's a crazy idea - why not let the Head Coach pick his OC?
To be fair, he got to pick his DC and went with Nolan who was a clear and obvious favor for a friend hire. If a guy coaching for his last job is willing to make that type of decision then I can’t trust him to select coaches moving forward.

Even with Dan Quinn, Mike wanted Joe Whitt who he was buddies with and the FO had to step in and push for Quinn. Whitt still ended up on staff and has done a good job, but sheesh that could’ve also been a favor for a friend hire.

I think Mike has accepted the level of involvement of the FO. If that’s the case I hire someone from the Andy Reid or Shanahan coaching tree. Those are the two best systems in the league today and are extremely QB friendly.

If KM departs, and the returning McCarthy is given the full control reins of the offense, i think he's gonna decide upon one trusted assistant and OC to run his offense through.

- Ditto with OC's Matt Nagy and Eric B in KC Chiefs offense under Andy Reid
- Ditto with OC Pete Carmichael with Sean Payton's offense
- Ditto with longtime buddy Joe Philbin under McCarthy's GB offense.

If it was to go down today, i'd believe ex- OC and experienced Brian Shottenheimer would be the likely new OC. running the McCarthy offense.

He's leaving on Dan Quinn's lifeboat off this Titanic.

Then we would nail the Publicity Concept......"it don't matter what they think of you, as long as they are talking about you" or "Any publicity is good publicity." And with the long postseason drought getting to an NFC Championship game, never mind the Super Bowl......we could get the publicity part done, as we see each day on the talking heads shows.
Then we could get imaginative and spew out new sayings to counter the "Secret Sauce", "Hot Boyz", or "This is the year".
And if that doesn't work.....we could sling out 3 pass attempts at 1st and goal on the 1, before attempting a FG to top our offense philosophy.
Now that's some priceless entertainment.......you think?

I would be willing to give up a season to watch that.

Get one of the many people in here who thinks every time the run doesn’t work is because we should have passed it and every time the pass doesn’t work is because we should a have run it.

- Payton had OC Pete Carmichael call the X's and O's plays,.. but it was Sean's offense. It went thru him

- Ditto with Andy Reid in KC, with those like Matt Nagy and Eric B. calling X's and O's

- Ironically Joe Philibin was the longtime OC under McCarthy in GB, instead of OL coach, but it was generally considered McCarthy's offense.
Payton just had Carmichael calling plays this year. Before that it was him. Andy Reid still calls plays in KC

Should OC Kellen Moore leave to become a new HC elsewhere ... who then becomes the new OC
of the Dallas Cowboys ?

Who fills Kellen Moore's shoes as OC ?

Who inside the club could get the promotion,...?
..or if an outside hire by team, who would you prefer be the new OC ?
MM may take over the play calling duties..................

It's time for Coach Mac to install and run his offense.
That's his calling card...
