I don't doubt that you may be a better evaluator of QB play than me. Just for fun, where do you think he might go in an NFL draft if he'd played in college the way he played in preseason this year?
Interesting thought. I'd have to separate into two facets.
1. If he only played as little as he did in preseason, still late in the draft.
2. If he played all season that way, then 2nd or 3rd, most likely.
To be clear, to get my evaluations I read a ton from what experts say, and then extrapolate that info to attempt a reasonably logical conclusion.
In this case, Milton showed to be a good playmaker, but we already knew that. However, to be a good starting QB you must go through progressions and you must have the ability to see and interpret the entire field. It's a very strange ability, because a QB has nanoseconds to go through all this. You can't just be smart, you must be fast/smart.
Milton did play very well, of that there is no doubt. However, I didn't observe him going through progressions. His first read was mostly open. So, why were they open? Because in the preseason you mostly have DBs who can't mirror a WR.
So, you're not just watching for completed passes, you're analyzing why the pass was completed and then trying to evaluate whether that same pass would've been good against NFL talent.
That's why you see so many backup/young QBs look good in preseason. Poor coverage.
