If our first two picks are...

Ramsey and Henry. Would you call the draft a success at that point or do we still need to get a stud DT/DE to make it a success?

IMO, If we get those two with the 1st and 2nd round picks, I'm elated and excited for next season and the future.

Thoughts?

Good start. But no, need a few more players that will contribute this year.

I'd like a DT and /or a DE that will eventually start with at least one of the first two picks.
But you never know who will be there and not.

Too much really good talent at 24 to take Henry there.
I'd be ok with him later though.
I'm even a bit wary of Ramsey, just b/c I think we want him at CB.
Would not totally complain though

Henry is not a 3rd rounder. He will be gone mid way through the 2nd round if we don't take him. The reason why I like Henry is because he's a downhill, barrel over you type runner, and would do very well behind this O-line. DMC would be the change of pace back, and most likely 3rd down due to his blocking and catching abilities. I agree with everyone that Elliot is stud, and wouldn't be mad if we took him even as high as 4, though I feel we could trade down and get him at 8 or 9.

Regardless of who we draft at 4, I want (need?) a defensive starter at 34.

I think that the 2nd round, specifically defenders, is the real strength of this draft.

Be interesting to see who is there. The strength appears to be DT and if one is there, that'd be a smart pick but he also likely wouldn't be a starter with Thornton signed and Crawford making a ton of money. I don't think there's much to this whole Crawford is playing DE stuff. I suspect he'll bounce out there in a pinch or in certain situations but he's not playing there a majority of the time.

Starter or not, a DT at that spot wouldn't be terrible.

It would be hard to call that draft a success when we only got two players and had like 9 picks.

Hate that start. Feel just fine at rb. Want the best front seven players available but happy to have Ramsey with another pass rusher or dynamic linebacker.

No. They do nothing to improve the pass rush or QB position.

You are wrong on both counts. If we draft Ramsey and he's a shut down cover Safety, QBs will take longer throwing the ball, which gives our D-line more time to get there. If Henry is a stud RB getting over 1100 yards (with DMC also getting close to 5-600) it will take a TON of pressure of Romo as teh defense now has to account for the run more.

So while yes, you are right in that they don't DIRECTLY affect the pass rush or QB position, they do supplement them and help. Also, if Romo stays 100% all year, there is only 2, maybe 3, QBs better in the NFL, so we don't necessarily need help there, but we do need to start considering the future a little bit.

The first three rounds should be pure defense, unless some unique offensive talent falls to us.

I'd call that the worst case scenario. I'd rather get a DE and DT in the first two picks. Maybe a slight trade back to get Rankins and a slight trade up to get Spence.

No. One of these first two picks need to be a pass rusher and I don't care for Henry at all.

See, I just don't see a DE/DT worth taking that high at #4. If we trade back to 15 with the Titans, sure maybe then we take a DE/DT, but at #4 I expect that pick to be pro-bowl caliber within 2 years, and if it's a DE then they need to get at least 9 sacks in their first year. Ramsey could be the next Ed Reed if he works at it. I love his cockiness and attitude, that's what you need on a defense. And I;ve stated several times before that I LOVE downhill, run you over style runners. and Henry is just that.

No, I am right on both counts, I watched every game last year. Those were the two biggest weaknesses by far and still are. Your picks dont move the needle at all. Defenses are built front to back, not vice versa. Even the best DBs can only cover for 2.5 seconds, so taking another DB at 4 makes no sense to me, particularly one who doesnt cause turn overs and isnt and a shut down corner.

Our D-line is gonna be so bad that Jones and Ramsey won't help. I think people get too caught up on whether someone is worth it at a position. That's why top 5 picks are usually tricky unless there's a "can't miss" or some trade value. Goff and Wentz aren't worth top picks but teams are desperate for QB so the Titans and Browns benefited from that. Bosa might not be worth the #4 pick but he'd definitely be worth the #12 pick in any draft. I just don't see the big difference between #4 and #12 to be honest. Every draft has guys that everyone knows is gonna be a stud but, for some insane reason, teams are afraid to draft them in the top 5. Look at JJ Watt and Aaron Donald. I'd rather have Rankins than Ramsey. If I can trade back and still get Rankins, that's a win-win.
