If Scandrick Is The New Safety Who Are Our Cb's

It sounds good, in theory, to have him at FS in the base defense so he's on the field and at slot corner in a 3 CB set but the problem, as already stated, is that we're too thing beyond that to try things like that cause at any moment if Newman or Jenkins goes down he is removed from the base safety position and you've got to put someone else in.

I'd rather they kept him at corner unless they get some really solid CB depth in here quickly than to use him at FS and mess up the corner depth.

We would probably have to pick up Springs and then a draft pick (since we have Alan Ball).

I'm sort of doubting this will happen. You don't take a very promising, young corner, who basically had a great rookie season and then move him to safety unless you are almost positive he'll be a phenomenal safety or if you are very desperate at the safety position. And last I checked, Newman isn't a spring chicken and has been hurt the past two seasons.

And here's the problem:

1) There's no telling how well O-Scan will play at safety since he's never even played the position before.

2) We have yet to sign Springs, who is also injury prone.

3) We used Davis and Hamlin at safety for most of last year. Not exactly the 'Soul Patrol' of safeties, but it didn't kill us last year either.

4) We have enough draft picks in the first 5 rounds to draft a pretty darn good safety.

I'd be for signing Springs and trying him out at free safety more than I would be for moving O-Scan around.

But, we'll see. The only other explanation I could see for moving O-Scan to safety is maybe Wade wants to get the best players he can on the field.

Sorry, where did it say we would be using Scandrick as a safety?

It's called misdirection. If teams think we are set at FS, they may not move up in front of us to take one should a good one fall.

Good call, it has to be this - Hamlin isn't a SS, and Scandrick should be our 2nd Corner.

I think people are overreacting to this. Our 2 CBs will be Newman and Henry. Our 3rd would be Scandrick. He's not gonna be playing S when we need 3 CBs on the field. We're using him in a hybrid position to take advantage of his skill set but it's not gonna be a regular thing. It'll be one of those novelty packages.

Our 4th CB would be Ball. We still need to add about 2 more CBs and a safety but this wouldn't change our needs or strategy one bit

People are overreacting -- this is ONE option -- the option that would be carried out if our roster stays exactly as it is.

I like the idea of having a cover-type ballhawkish guy like Scandrick at FS. The Hamlin part is what I don't like - he's just not SS material to me as he's not so great in run support.

Ideally, we bring in a SS

That's what I was wondering...is this purely speculation?

It could be....but this tells me we need to pull in a couple of more DBs via FA or the draft.

See that looks decent right now..but will Newman play all 16 games? What if Jenkins gets hurt? I simply don't think we have the depth to put Scandrick at FS.

I would think Scandrick returns to corner if something were to happen to Newman or Jenkins, but depth is definitely an issue.

I don't like any of our other free safety options, outside of Hamlin, but I did forget to inclue Tra Battle in the mix. Not sure if he's any better of an option than Watkins or Brown, though.

I'm kind of disappointed in Brown. I thought he was going to show some signs of development and be a potential option at the position, but he took a step backward last year.

There are alot of roster spots open... I expect that Camp Cupcake is going to be Camp Competition. The following players are not on the 53 anymore. Henry,TO,Williams,Canty,Berger,Thomas,Burnett,Johnson,Bollinger,Curtis and Maybe Polk and Davis. Procter and Ellis might not make it to camp. So far we've added Brooking, Stewart and Kitna.. We might add a couple more free agents but, That's 11 spots Up for grab.. Luckily we have 11 draft picks and the undrafted free agents. Either way the roster is being churned.. from the bottom and top.

Yes, but I think Scandrick is better than Jenkins. Can Jenkins play safety?

:)
