Another reason I made this thread is because of something that happened to a female friend of my dad's back in college. He went to the U of H (Houston). A friend of his was raped. A guy crawled into her window, raped her, and left. Since that night, the girl's dad slept in her bed, while she slept with her mom in her parents' bed. One night, the same guy came back. He started to open the window and crawl in. The dad, well aware of what was happening, waited until the guy was completely in the house. The dad slept with a shotgun. As soon as the perp was in, the dad rose up, and blasted the guy's head off. True story (although I realize it sounds made up).

For me, I wouldn't even ask a question. You've broken into my home, and that's enough for you to DIE. Sorry.

Didn't Downey Jr. one time break into someones house? I bet that was in California and that is the reason he is still around.

Which brings up an interesting question. Would you give them the chance to get out? In such a situation can anyone afford to hesitate and say 'put 'em up; now leave or I shoot'?

Hell no. There is a reason they are there. And it's not to do me or my family any good. If they are hungry and need something they would be better off knocking on my door and asking for it. I would help them. But if they come in unannounced they will be leaving in the worlds largest zip lock bag.

.....could you kill them? I'm not talking legalities here. In Texas, it's perfectly legal to shoot and KILL someone that breaks into your house, and it's also perfectly legal (according to my cop neighbor) to shoot and kill someone that's breaking into your car, as long as it's AT NIGHT.

For me...YES! If someone broke into my house, I would not hesitate to shoot and kill them. Why? My home is my sanctuary, and I should always feel safe there. I'm not a gun-toting crazy, but as soon as I become a home-owner, I will buy a gun. It amazes me that there are places where I would go to jail for murder for protecting my home.

So my question to the fellow Zoners. Could you actually shoot and kill someone that broke into your home?

If someone breaks into your house you have a legal right to defend your property that should appy for any state you live in.

You have the right to protect yourself and your family and if you have to kill someone who breaks into your home it's self defense.

I had a couple of thugs snooping around my house last year.

I have surveillance all around my home and one of my house keepers saw them poking around and called the police and they were apprehended.

I'm not about to negotiate with someone who breaks into my home and is probably carrying a weapon I'm taking them out with my first opportunity because that might be my only opportunity to save me and my family.

Most of them hope nobody is home or if they are home they are asleep and will never know they are in there to begin with.

They hope no one is home but sometimes someone is home and that's where most tragedies occur. Someone in the home hears a noise and walks in on the burglar and it turns into a botched robbery attempt and the burglar panics and ends up killing the person.

Resident fatally shoots armed intruder in SE Houston

icon_ktrk_byline.gif

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A resident turned the tables on three armed intruders last night in southeast Houston. And now, one of those gunmen is dead.

Police say three suspects -- two men and a woman -- knocked on a door at the complex. When a female resident answered, one of the men grabbed the her, put a gun to her head and made demands.

Police say that's when a male resident inside the apartment heard the commotion, grabbed his pistol and began firing, hitting one of the men in the chest.

As I stated, when you choose to break into the homes of people that live in very pro-gun states like Texas, you are really taking your life in your own hands.

What also makes places like Texas a very dangerous place to choose a career as a home burglar/invader is that not only is it very pro-gun but the people that own those guns are typically very skilled at using them.

So many people I know here go hunting all the time and 9/10 they will be more adept with a weapon then your average criminal.

Was just browsing through some of my favorite blogs and saw this:

2010 Saw Dramatic Rise In Home Invasions

Maybe it’s the economy or maybe people are just getting nuttier, but my news alerts have been pouring in describing horrific home-invasions with many resulting in growing levels of violence.
In some places, there is a correlation between home invasions and organized crime, drugs, prostitution and gambling.

In Calgary, our neighbor to the north, the Calgary Herald reports “The violent home confrontations typically see victims assaulted, threatened and bound with duct tape, plastic zip ties or rope while thieves ransack their homes for cash and valuables.”

It seems that home invasion has become a crime that knows no boundaries.
The pseudo good news is in 2/3rd of the home invasion cases the parties involved (invaded and invaders) were heavily into lowlife activities. So if you are not dealing drugs or involved in gang activity then you’re less susceptible.
However in almost 1/3rd of the cases the victims were people who kept large sums of money in their homes. So if you are a person who stuffs your mattress with cash you are more vulnerable.

If you fit into the category of mattress stuffer:
#1 Put your money in the bank! It makes no sense to have wads of cash around. Even if it’s in a safe, a home invader will force you to open it.

#2 If you insist on having wads of cash around then tell no-one! Home invaders are often deprived people in a position of trust who turn on their victim.

#3 Take some of that money and invest it into a home security system. For about a dollar a day your home can be fully monitored and alarmed.

Not if I didn't have to. I'd rather not kill someone, and I'd rather not kill someone over theft. I imagine if someone did break into my house, my fear would react first and I can't say what would happen. I hope I never find out.

A crackhead tried to crawl in my window in East Austin a few years back. I gave him the Louisville slugger treatment. Just two hits and he fell out the window in front of my desk where I was studying. I called the cops, he was later found a few yards from my house and arrested for attempted burglary.

I never followed up with the case (because I don't like dealing with police or the courts), but I'm betting the knot on his head and the broken collar bone taught him a pretty good lesson. LOL

Just for breaking and entering, or would they first have to physically threaten you in some way?

Breakin and entering is pretty damn threatening.

Threatening enough to get shot.

Mussel loader and a bow and arrow!!! Those two sentences will have me laughing all day. Thanks (and no, I'm not being sarcastic).
