Dan Quinn will likely leave in the offseason for greener pastures. As much as I like McCarthy, this will leave him with Dak Prescott running the offense and a huge variable at defense.
While Dak has shown what we hope is some improvement, is he good enough to carry the Cowboys when the defense is not getting turnovers and giving the offense as much help as they have this season? We already know the answer to that. With the Cowboys certain to extend Dak's contract, their fate will be sealed.
It takes either consistent marquee coaching and/or a special collection of players having a great year at the same time to achieve success, and only by having that for more than a single year at a time can they achieve greatness.
This is it. If the Cowboys don't show a noticable improvement in crunch time and advance in the playoffs to the championship game at least, the chances of them improving next year are slim and none.

Why is everyone so certain Quinn is leaving? He had some good opportunities last year and took himself out of the running. So why is it a certainty he will jump ship next season? What golden opportunities will he find out there after this year? The Chargers? Other than the weather what makes that team such a good opportunity? The Commanders? After trading away their 2 DEs why would he want to go there? The Jets? eh, no.

I have no doubt he will be sought after, but I still think it is 50-50 that he leaves.

The bigger problem for Dallas is all the players they need to sign including Dak.

Okay, two things. One, it would suck if DQ left, but I could see someone like Al Harris being promoted to DC, and he knows DQ's system. So, we can weather it that storm potentially. Secondly, I don't think he will. He clearly likes it here. Jerry is paying him well. I think he stays at least one more year. The teams that I see looking for a coach after this season are as follows:

• Panthers - DQ would be nuking his own career going there.
• Steelers - they need an offensive mind (though, maybe we could see if Tomlin wants to be our DC if DQ goes there?)
• Chargers - they also need an offensive mind for Herbert. I see Jim Harbaugh going there from Michigan.
• Patriots - Why would he go there?
• Bucs if they miss the playoffs - Possible, but not likely
• Falcons if they miss the playoffs - tried that and I don't think he'd want to go back there.
• Saints if they miss the playoffs - with Derek Carr?
• Raiders - they're a mess.
• Maybe the Bears? - they'll probably want an offensive coach, and I think Eberflus has done enough to save his job for the time being.
• Maybe Seattle if Carroll retires - this is the one spot, if Carroll retires, that I'd be worried about. This is the only possibility on this list where I could see him maybe trying to make a play for the HC spot.

With these possibilities, the only one that I can really see tempting him away from here is Seattle if Carroll leaves. Otherwise, I think it's safe to presume he will stay here. If he does leave, then maybe Harris takes over, so not the worst thing in the world.

I could see that being possible too. Florio was talking about him possibly mutually leaving Pittsburgh, and, like you said, if he is, we might want to hire him (assuming he hires an OC that uses the WCO to keep Dak developing).
