If we can cut Aikman and Emmitt, we certainly can cut Romo

I guess only in the sense that the partner trading team might require one.
How much would DAL get in return if they restructured his 14m down to a 2m base and THEN traded him.......the new team would only owe 2m...........that could fetch multiple 1sts......is that worth 12m?

OP seems to think cutting Romo would be disrespect..:but the opposite is true.

Why in the world would we trade him, when there are teams like the Broncos that would give us a quality draft pick to get him?

Tony will not likely come in after not playing sustained football in almost two years and look like a top 5 QB. There is a far greater chance of this killing any trade value he potentially has.

Maybe but I would take that chance. And if what you are saying is true that is more the reason to get him some playing time in case anything happens to Dak down the road.

Tony will retire. Look forward to seeing him as an ESPN analyst.

He could be the next Dandy Don.

Neither Aikman nor Smith were cut. One retired and the other was a FA who signed with another team (with a better offer on the table from Dallas). Facts and all, ya know.
Retired, signed with another team.
The point is Dallas let those two go, in their own dignified ways.
Another point: those two each have 3 Super Bowl rings. Romo has 2 CAREER PLAYOFF WINS. BOTH IN THE FIRST ROUND.
So, imho, Romo does not even ascend into the pantheon where Aikman and Smith reside.

Why cut him? I know I am in the minority but I let his contract run out. Not paying anything for Dak now anyways and no need to do so till 3 years from now.
Yeah, let's just keep 25 mill locked up in our backup QB for 3 years. It's not like we need to address any other positions on the team or keep any of our other players who's contracts will be expiring.

Relax they'll let Tony play a series or 2 in the last couple games, mostly runs and a few slants or flares, and it will raise his trade value exponentially; maybe even to a conditional 3rd. Either he retires and coaches, or goes elsewhere a plays a game or 2. But he won't be on this roster next year.

Just call me the Jerry-Whisperer... hehe... er... one of the Jerry-Whisperers, since there's no shortage of us who can read the owner/GM after all these years before he even opens his mouth... it's like I said a couple of times now... it's going to come down to how Romo thinks about this. And we're not going to learn that until the season is over.

http://sportsday.***BANNED-URL***/d...northodox-absolutely-want-keep-tony-romo-2017

..."Certainly I don't want to knock the rust off and risk injury," Jones said on the G-Bag Nation show. "As sharp as he looks in practice, there's no rust I'm interested in knocking off.

"He's so sharp out there [in practice] it's unbelievable. He picks it apart."

Despite much talk about where Romo will be playing next season. Jones believes there's a chance it will still be in Dallas. Many would argue that the Cowboys can't afford to pay a backup quarterback Romo's current salary.

But Jones says they can, and he's not factoring in a renegotiation.

"We have anticipated having Romo's salary on our cap structure for years," Jones said. "His staying doesn't alter what our plans have been."

One reason the Cowboys could afford it is because Prescott's four-year, $2.7 million rookie contract extends through 2019. Dallas owes the rookie just a $450,000 base salary this year.

"I think if I ask Tony to go with us on that and let's try to win a championship, I think, yes, he will [stay]," Jones told the New York Daily News.

Jones added: "I think Tony is going to compete. He will never accept it. But do I think it is possible that he could be in Dallas and it's good for him and good for us and be the smart thing to do? How many times have we ever seen one drawn up where you see that kind of depth at the quarterback position? How many times do you have to be reminded if we had the concussion protocol the way we had it today, Troy Aikman wouldn't have played in the second Super Bowl."

Quarterbacks are suspect to injury, Jones said. Having Romo on hand in 2017 would give the Cowboys insurance behind center. And 2016 isn't even over. Jones thinks his longtime playmaker "is going to get his opportunity."

"I don't want it to happen," Jones said. "But I think he may get his opportunity to get us a Super Bowl. While that's a mixed bag when I think about it -- that means you don't have Dak out there -- but it means, what a story, one for the ages, if he'd step in there and this year help us win a Super Bowl on the field with his skill. That can happen here. We're not talking about a bus driver out there. We're talking about a guy who can go out there and move our team."
