With the news Romo will miss the rest of the season, its become painfully clear that the Cowboys will have a high pick in next years draft. However its likely we may not wind up bad enough for the #1 pick. The name that has been thrown around alot the past couple days , Paxton Lynch, is most likely going to be the #1 overall pick.

Lynch however is not the only franchise level QB in this draft. Before Lynch’s ascension, Jared Goff seemed like a strong contender for #1 overall. He has slipped some, but mainly due to Lynch leapfrogging him, he is still viewed as a franchise level QB and top 5 pick.

If Dallas isnt bad enough to get Lynch, do you view Goff as a worthwhile alternative

I know the knee-jerk around here right now is we have to spend a high pick on a quarterback in 2016, but I don't think either of these guys are as good as they're being projected. I like Wentz in the second better than almost any scenario where we take Goff or Lynch. I think there are a handful of can't miss prospects in the first five picks or so. This team needs to grab one of those guys. I am hoping we wind up #3 and Lynch and Goff go 1 and 2 respectively.

Here is my opinion at this point. We all have thoughts on taking a QB this draft, next years (2017) looks weaker than this years, and our draft position should not be as high next as it will be this year. Haven't really looked at the prospects yet. But the conversation is - do we use our 1st pick - top 5 at a guess, on a QB or do we take a stud at another position and take a QB in the second to groom ?
This right now to my rational brain that seems like the best case for Dallas, (2nd rounder) we want a QB to sit and learn for a year or two.
My problem with that and it will be a debate all thru the draft and after, I'm sure is - does anybody trust the Dallas coaching staff, especially Wade Wilson the QB coach to actually coach up a QB prospect ? I think Wilson is the most overrated coach on the staff ! Brandon Weeden anybody ? He had to be telling Jerry and Jason he could coach him up, otherwise why did they keep him so long ! Lee was the QB coach when Romo came up, he is now a head coach in college. Wilson has not done sh-- here in my opinion.
The theory is correct I think to take a 2nd round QB and coach em up for a year or two - who ever they decide on. But if Wilson stays the QB coach - I don't even trust that !

The more I watch and read about Wentz, the more I think he goes in the 1st round, especially with so many teams needing QB's. He's going to rise up draft boards after the combine and Senior Bowl once he shows off his big arm and athleticism.

I have thought about that. There are only so many selections though. I think he stays in the second just because of the amount of talent ahead of him. If he does go in the first, we may have to settle for Cook or Brissett.

Wentz hasn't played in weeks and I wonder how many here like the idea of Wentz versus actually watching and evaluating him. My opinion on Wentz is great size and tools but need to see him more with and against tougher competition. The Senior Bowl should reveal a lot about Wentz.

I think so. Very promising from what I've seen. Intrigued with Wentz also. If we could get Hargreaves and then trade up to get Wentz that would be a dream draft.

I'll copy and paste what I said earlier:
Oh man, people who are comfortable picking Goff with a top 5 pick, you guys are insane. The guy flat out sucks. Has anyone even watched him? I'm actually surprised so many here are down for that. I can't comment on Lynch because I literally haven't seen him play a snap, but this is a atrocious year for a qb needy team. Connor Cook imo is the best of the bunch, and even he looks like a game manager at the next level, give him a top 5 defense and top running game you'll be fine. Would rather go Jalen Ramsey or Joey Bosa first then Carson Wentz secon

Can Goff do the zone-read option? I get the sense he is a straight dropback passer.

I've watched every 2015 snap and most of the games he's played in since winning the starting job as a true freshman during the 2013 season. He has steadily improved the cal squad since he's been there in spite of poor offensive line play.

He's owner of 25 cal passing records, Aaron Rodgers alma mater for those that did not know.

He's never finished a season under 60% completion percentage and approximately 2:1 TD to int ratio. (18:10 his true freshman year).

Furthermore, he has only missed 1 game in 3 years of starting at a power five school ( where the competition goes on to play at the next level). Which flies in the face of the second biggest argument about him, his weight and the notion it will suddenly cause him to be more fragile at the next level. (sacked 33, 26, and 27 times in '13, '14, and '15 which ranked 99, 68, and 80th nationally)

Most importantly of all if you watch him you see a qb who has active feet, goes through multiple reads, has a quick release, is mobile in the pocket and has very good pocket awareness.

What's more is that he has accomplished this on team that does not have top recruiting classes and still competes with the USCs and UCLAs of the world. Can anyone name another player on the cal team off the top of their head that is draft worthy?

His deep ball accuracy could use some work. And he does tend to throw off his back foot at times.

They bears record has improved every year since Goff has been under center, with the exception of his true freshman year. He's no Luck but there is a lot to like there.

Very good assessment. I'm really high on him and would be fine with drafting him. He uses his head on the field and thats just something you can't teach.

As to the OP, I'm really torn on what I would want. Lynch or Goff has plenty of merit, but I would love Hargreaves, Ramsey or Bosa wearing a star also.

I see a QB that can make some accurate throws and it's no wonder he has a good completion percentage.

The big difference I see between Goff and Lynch is release. Lynch has a little bit of a long-armed windup. Goff flicks the ball.

I don't know, you make some good points, but that other guy did says he sucks. Such strong arguments on both sides.
