If we decide to let Spencer and/or Jenkins walk for whatever reason, it would seem that both would receive substantial contracts from their new clubs. With that being said ..... assuming we don't sign any free agents that cancel them out, what are the chances we will receive a 3rd round compensatory pick for each of them in the draft?

here are rules:

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

** In Dallas situation I sure wish the compensatory formula was based on what round they were drafted.

I know what the factors are. :) I am wondering if you guys think the contracts they will sign will net us the highest compensatory pick on each.

I would think both would be somewhat like the Brandon Carr signing by us last year. Does anyone know what draft pick compensation the Chiefs got for Carr (or how it figured into the formula) or does that sort of thing lag a year behind?

Spencer isn't going anywhere. He'll get a deal or the tag.

Jenkins is leaving.

it lags a year behind - they would get the pick in the '13 draft

You can't keep everybody. And you can't just give people huge contracts after one solid year either. I would be fine if both hit the open market next season. The money Spencer will require will be a lot more than I think the Cowboys can afford. Jenkins will look for a lot more than they'll be willing to spend. They both walk in my opinion.

If the Cowboys sign any substantial Free Agents, then it will cancel out the FAs that they lose in terms of comp picks.

Also, I think that any comps picks from Jenkins or Spencer would be awarded in the 2014 draft.

I think any comp picks for the 2013 draft would be based on Free Agents lost after the 2012 season. I can't remember losing any Free Agents after 2012. Newman was a cut, not a Free Agent.

I doubt we'll sign many qualifying free agents this year, and we have quite a few we'll lose, so I think we'll likely get compensation for both.

I think their salaries are likely to fetch a 4th each, not a 3rd.

I don't think we'll be letting spencer go, however.

Last year only asomugha warranted a 3rd, players with large contracts like sidney rice got a 4th. The year before only julius peppers warranted a 3rd, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Aaron Kampan only got 4ths.

Jenkins has not done anything to earn a substantial contract elsewhere, at least one that would result in us getting a 3rd in compensation

He will get a decent contract somewhere. He is still tons better than the Alan Ball's of the world.

I don't disagree, but we got a 4th for Bowen who got a 5 year, $27.5 million contract with 12.5 guaranteed, I have a very hard time seeing Jenkins getting a contract that exceeds that.

Spencer will be here at least another season. I believe Jenkins finds a fair contract somewhere else. If the Cowboys are committed to Scandrick, you can't afford to pay a 4th CB even average starter's money. And i really like Jenkins...

He's still fairly young, and he's been to the pro bowl. Someone may overpay.

Might be right. But it'll cost about 11 million to franchise Spencer next year. Worth it? I don't know. Personally, I think we replace him with Albright, then use that money to improve other areas, hopefully making us a better team overall. Just MHO.

That would be an awful idea. The whole reason we moved Albright inside is because he sucks as a pass rusher.

are we eligible for a comp pick this draft?

We won't see one as we signed several unrestricted free agents (Carr, Bernadeau, Livings, Orton, and Connor)
