If we were a bit more active on free agency, would we need to be this active now?

Over the last few weeks/months, seems like there's a new player happy to be a cowboy. If we were this active in the off season, would we need to be this active now. Yes I know injuries are the biggest issue.

Yes, for the reason you said. We had a 53-man roster and apparently were mostly happy with it. Injuries open up holes, so we're looking to fill them. We've got some developmental players on the PS, but we're not looking to rely on developmental players when we're in the stretch run for the playoffs.

I think Hankins is the only addition we've made where we didn't lose a player and need to replace him, at least before signing Hilton. (Well, technically we lost Ridgeway, but we chose that loss.) The plan at receiver was for Washington to fill that third role. I was unsure about that plan because he had never won that job in Pittsburgh, and it appears we've abandoned it.

You have no idea how free agent signings are going to pan out until the season starts. You go in believing in the roster you have but things could change as the season progresses. Even had the Cowboys been more active in free agency there’s no assurances those signings would have panned out and we wouldn’t be looking for players now.

I was very vocal this off season about our lack of signing free agents.
I was especially disappointed we did not sign any offensive lineman.
Then Tyron went down and we were fortunate to sign Peters

Well a lot of the positions people were calling for all off-season we had to fill with lesser players during the year, so I guess yes. Imagine if we added a stud DT over the off-season? Maybe all this talk of needing to improve the run defense and no push up the middle wouldn’t be an issue. We added an older OL who while seemingly still good doesn’t seem to be able to play even half the game and an older WR who we will see what he has soon.

They are being active on injured positions, not really a lack of free agents signings.

I would have liked more activity on FA and possibly another trade, but this front office likes the christmas season player savings.

Hankins and TY Hilton aren’t replacing injured players. These type of signings probably should have occurred in April.
I was speaking of the players they are signing now

The Cowboys are only active because of injuries and TY is cheap. We are 10-3 and will probably lock up a playoff spot this weekend. Relax…….

I.e. miller out for the season. Gregory barely played

I wish, the draft came before a free agency. They would put a lot of these high priest, prima donnas rights in their place.

If we had been more active in free agency, would we have less flexibility now to respond to the injury that is totally unknown from the totally unknown position? Your point is still true. However, the opposite approach is also true many many times.

Free agency is one route for acquiring talent while we are proficient in the most prolific route, the draft. But after these 2 have played out and the season starts then weaknesses in personnel rear their ugly heads (like our inside DL). While we did good getting Hankins the front oritice stubbed their collective toes by (#1) not getting Suh and (#2) letting Suh go to our mortal enemy the Philthy team. Both of these hurt our team. Suh was still strong in the middle against the run (as we will see on 12/24).

So many half arsed moves spawned by the prideful "We like our guys" FO philosophy vs the "Let's do EVERYTHING we can to bring home the Lombardi" philosophy on getting the best talent available. We have seen that philosophy (the 2nd one) bring home the trophy multiple times lately.
