Get in the oil industry, make tons and tons of money then make the Jones family an offer they couldn't refuse!

I would probably go into Dentistry. I have developed a real interest in it. As a kid I just associated it with pain and discomfort. But I have a pretty sweet job now so I can't complain to much.

I dunno...

I think any career choice where the goals are: a lot of wealth in order to retire early... may not be the best career choice. You could be headed to a 25 year career of not much fun. While I don't believe fully in the "Do what you love and the money will come" I think the enjoyment aspect has to be balanced with the financial rewards. If you need 6 week vacations a year and a goal of retirement by 50-- you've probably chosen the wrong field.

Keep in mind one doesn't need to be "very wealthy" to have a solid financial foundation. In a lot of areas of this country earning $100K a year will give you good living... especially if you're controlled about your housing and automobile needs.

I would suggest reading "The Millionaire Next Door" by Thomas Stanley.

I have very bad medical issues. I always have and probably always will. While many people can be happy with 60k a year, my prescriptions alone with a prescription plan cost me $300 a month. If I was to lose health coverage for a month I would be bankrupt. I have scored excellent on all local police exams, and one department in particular after 6 years has 96k base before overtime/time differential/health care/retirement.. plus absolute job security. This would be following in my fathers footsteps and allow me unparalleled job security + financial well being.

In the private sector I figure I would need to make much more then I would in the public (lack of pension, much less job security). It's not me listening to rap music saying "I want a rollie and a benz", it's me looking at the possibility of having to spend 3 months in a hospital (again.) and losing any private sector job. I have very much so over achieved and have 4 years of work experience while only two would be possible given my age + hospitalizations. I worked 3 jobs, went to school ft + volunteered at one point. Many people can live a lovely life with 100k a year, I can't :(. To counteract that I have set my sights high and my expectations of myself higher. My friends are content with B's, anything less then rank #1 in all of my classes is failure to me (In one of my classes on a recent exam I scored a 100, everyone else failed. Today the teacher offered everyone extra credit besides me, I don't think that's fair but I am not complaining lol). I'm transferring to the top public school in the northeast, got into more prestigious private schools (including the only ivy I applied to) but cost is prohibitive.

Definitely marketing/advertising/PR

Tons of money to be made, and it's a nice combination of professionalism/fun. I'm kinda doing that now, but as a writer only...with a diff college degree I'd probably be further along.

Learning about the restaurant business. Would have loved to open my own TEX/MEX restaurant, and have the Cowboys on TV every Sunday. I'm actually a very good cook. Got an opportunity to do it in the early 90's in upstate NY, but didn't do it. One of the worst mistakes of my life. The closest thing they had to Mexican food was the Taco Bell in Albany 40 miles away.

I would have gotten into a mathematics major in college and work to become an actuary.

Talk about cashing it in...

What...and give up your career as an elf, ambiguously named, "Hermey"?!

I would certainly rethink law school. While law school was a blast, being an attorney is stressful and frustrating.

Ive heard several horror stories of video game designers working 80-100 hr work weeks and not getting paid well enough to justify it.

Yep..
Even with EA or another stable company it isn't all it is cracked up to be. You'll make 100k a year at the top levels, but that's about it. I mean sure there is a great novelty in designing worlds for millions of people to play but the money and stability is just not there. Now if you created an Angry Bird's or Minecraft you'd make yourself a nice 100m+ :laugh1: but those games weren't built with a corporation behind them.

My first degree was Social Science so I could teach and coach. After a few years I got a BA in IT and have been in that field ever sense. If I coulld redo anything I would have skipped teaching and gone straight into IT. Instead of two bachelors I'd have gotten a masters in something in IT.

A commercial airline pilot. I love going to new places. I can sit in the airport and watch planes land and take-off all day.
