If You Were Born After 1975 - You Should Check This Out

I certainly remember that brutal loss to the Whiners on that bitterly cold January day. I had just gotten back to college (from Christmas break) the day before. Myself and many others gathered in the student center to watch the game. I was devastated after it was all over. The night before a huge winter storm came through, leaving about a foot of snow and below zero temperatures. After the game, my heart was as frozen as the ground. :D

It wasn't Ronnie Lott and Tony Hill it was Eric Wright tackling Drew Pearson. Almost cried after Danny White fumbled on the next play. Terrible play by right guard Kurt Petersen. He got run over on the most important play of his career (shades of Cory Proctor).

~sigh~

I've got to say, this game is still probably too painful to rewatch.

And that makes Alvin Harper's slant the sweetest play in NFL history if you count the historic significance of it all. It was 12 years in the making.

That was a long time to wait for payback...but how sweet it was.

NFL Network Presents

On Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24 at 8 p.m. ET, NFL Network will televise, for the first time since the original airing, one of the most historic playoff games in league history, as NFL Classic Games encores the 1981 NFC Championship Game between the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.

For those too young who never experienced it, this game will give you a sense of how much the 90's meant to those who did. A brutal and devastating loss but a great game.

Be sure to watch when the Cowboys get the ball back after The Catch. With about a minute left, Drew Pearson runs a slant and is gone 80 yards for an historic touchdown except for a finger tip grab on the back of his jersey.
THAT would forever have been "The Catch"

Also, I've seen footage of this game where Jack Buck, (Joe's father) broadcast the game and I remember him throughout the telecast saying "Look Out Joe" whenever Montana dropped back to pass and was being chased. Not sure if it was radio or he did the national broadcast.

Yes they hated us back then too.

Gawd, I don't know if I can watch that, it's too painful...to this day everytime they show the damn "catch", I have to change the channel as it turns my stomach.

I'm still not over that loss or either of the Steeler Super Bowl losses and I'm just a freaking fan, I can't imagine how bad it is for the players.

Having said that, I suspect I'll attempt to sit through it

All I can say is "Thank you Jimmy!"

:starspin :starspin :starspin :starspin :starspin

You ain't kiddin', the pain of the loss to the niners in the catch game made beating them in back to back championship games the sweetest wins I've ever experienced, I think the 92' championship would rank as my #1 Cowboy game of all time

Then they left me sick to my stomach to this day when they lost to the Niners in 94', DAMN!!!!!!! I'm still bitter that two grown men let egos and pettyness ruin a chance at a 3-peat.

That's the game that made me a Cowboys fan for life.

It was a heartbreaker for sure, and I cried after the game, but I realized that anything that can make you hurt that much, must be pretty special.

I don't know if I can watch the game again... still a bittersweet memory, but I'll give it a try.

Damnit I hate staying at my parents house over Xmas break.

They dont even have digital cable, let alone NFL Network.

Now, I could be wrong, but I recall watching it (I was about 17 at the time) and at the very end of the game, didn't Montana run out of his own endzone with time on the clock? I guess I'll watch it tonight to see if that's true...I did read once that Montana was so concerned about a death threat on him that he wanted off of that field as soon as possible.

But if he did run off with time on the clock, shouldn't that have been 2 points for the Cowboys?

Again, it's been awhile and I also remember that I was in tears at the end of the game so I could be mistaken.

Ha! A high school buddy of mine made the same argument/observation the very next day. Yes, Montana did run through the endzone with the clock winding down, but only after taking a knee. In other words, it wasn't a "live" play.

Yeah, I guess I forgot about that! I'm still going to check it out tonight to satisfy my curiousity!

I downloaded the original broadcast of this over the summer, I was too young. 83 is when I really became a kid that watched football every week.

Watching it all these years later, knowing the outcome was still painful.

I remember watching the game and as painful as a loss as it was it was also one of the all time greatest games that has been played in the NFL.

I hate losing as much as the next guy but I also know losing is part of the deal when it comes to sport and while you don't have to like if I have learned to appreiate the great games that have been played and how many great games the Cowboys have been apart of.

It is games like the Cowboys vs 49ers in 81 as well as many other great games that has made the NFL what it is today and why so many love this game.

Gun:

For the pictures and link to the film. To this day, that still kills me.

I grew up loving that team..

Maybe they can really get under the skins of all the NFC East fans and show bad playoff losses by the NFC East to the 49er's. This game would be a good start followed by that debacle where the Giants blew that huge lead against them a few years ago, 2002 I think. Oh boy!

It bugs me that some people still hang this loss on White. He wasn't playing defense on the drive that led to Clark's TD, and it wasn't his fault that Drew was brought down by two fingers. OK, he fumbled on the next play, but he was blindsided. Hell, Montana threw three picks that day and lost a fumble of his own.

I agree White took the brunt of that loss and in my view it was wrong that many pointed at him as the reason. Personally I don't care much for fans who need a scape goat in my view 2 great teams went out there and played a tough hard game and at the end of the day only one could walk away with the win. It was the 49ers, I tip my hat to them for the great game they played but I hold my head high knowing that my team played very good as well.

I can understand not wanting to watch it again. I take games hard still but internalize it more. Back then I was a raving lunatic and yes I cried afterwards. But the pain makes the reward that much sweeter.

I think that game reinforces all of our love for Jimmy and what he did and the bravado in which he did it. He got us the revenge we all wanted so bad.

Merry Christmas Jimmy Johnson!
