With as many snaps as he played, I think a really tough JV player could do that over the course of 16 games.

Linemen fall down, miss assigments, hell QBs slide right into you sometimes.

You would almost have to try to only have 4.5 QBPs.

Quite frankly it's stunning how bad he's become.

Frankly I think the idea that he was on roids or the like is about the only thing that makes sense. You see how hard he was to move a couple of years ago and what a soft piece of crap he is now and that is the only answer.

In order to field a better team next year we need to make some cuts this year to push unused cap into next year to deal with the $20+ million of dead money next year. I think it was $20M before the cuts to Gurode and Olshansky so there is probably another $3M or so to add to that figure now.

Ideally, we will want about $15M of unused space this year as we know there will be some growing pains with the young OL and new defensive scheme. Next year we have a better chance at contending and may need some ammunition to make a key acquisition for the secondary or DL.

Yeah, I agree with that.

It's nice to say, "take one year at a time" but you just can't "choke" the team's cap situation next year with all that dead money and not be able to offset it to some extent.

Gurode was a tough one for me too because he could still play. He was probably the best Center in the league going up against 3-4 defenses because of his ability to handle massive NTs one-on-one.

Since we are basically "rebuilding" and he isn't part of our future with the degenerative knees I understanding releasing him this year. I just wish he was worth something on the trade market.

I bet he was worth a 3rd rounder on draft day (if we had been allowed to make trades).

His 3.4 mill base pay salary was way too high for his pushover/backup services. I got so sick of seeing him get owned by his man. It makes sense he is not as strong as he once was because of no longer being juiced.

The thought hadn't even crossed my mind for some reason, but you're right it makes total sense. That San Diego defense was probably all juicing.

Also, from all of our released players, you have to factor in their next years salary too. That won't be counting against us and will make that approx. 20 mil. of dead money so much more manageable.

Well, we haven't been talking about salary cap projections so it's hard to say how much impact we have made there.

Regardless, the thing about dead cap money is that is money that counts against the cap without any benefit to the team. If we can push $15M from this year into next year then we only have $5M dead cap money and can put together a fairly normal roster.

I really hope Jerry has learned his lesson about giving long-term deals to older players. It just doesn't make financial sense most of the time. You always have to prepare for this situation by grooming some younger players which means beefing up the scouting dept. and getting the best coaches possible for player development.

That's really not how it works. Dead money really doesn't mean anything other than the players aren't on the team anymore. The only thing that matters is available space and that's where pushing salary counts. But it can't erase the dead money.

It wasn't just with the Chargers. His last year against the Chargers, he was weak against the run and people who covered the Chargers noted that.

But in his first year with us, he was very stout against the run.

I still remember watching him against Larry Allen in the preseason game years back (06 I think?) and how he held his own. He was also leaner then but a beast. Now he's getting pushed around by Doug Free (and anybody else present) in practice and congratulating him for being very strong.
