Position:
Thomas: Free Safety
Iloka: Strong Safety

Size:

Thomas: 5’10, 202
Iloka: 6’4” 225

2018 PFF rating:
Thomas: 90.2
Iloka: 71.4

2018 salary hit:
Thomas: $8.5 mil
Ikola: Unknown. Will be free agent. I project $2.5-3.5 mil

LongTerm Commitment to Aging Player:
Thomas more likely requires huge-dollar long-term deal.
Iloka might not require a long-term commitment. Could be one-year.

Age:
Thomas 29.2 yrs
Ikola: 28.1 yrs

Recent Durability:
Thomas: late 2016 broken leg
Ikola: Started Last 76 games

Ikola. No question about it. Half the cost of Thomas and all 2019 draft assets are kept. I also like his size.

I'm sure he can learn the FS position if needed. He is an experienced vet and a solid player or Heath can be moved to FS.

Lol you like his size? Well the guy can’t run! Earl is 10x’s the player of this scrub.

Ikola is definitely a strong safety type based on size and (relative lack of) speed. True Heath can play both spots.

A 71 score puts Ikola in the realm of league average. It’s not inconceivable we could get both Ikola and Thomas (doubt it but possible)

I say that because there may not be a big market this time of year for strong safety, and it’s possible he’ll be signable for $2 mil or less.

Neither are hybrid players: One is emphatically free safety. One emphatically strong.

Who has the highest PFF ranking amongst all the available safeties? And how do Cowboys safeties rank against those numbers?

Why not? I’ll be surprised if the Cowboys don’t grab Ikola.

Exactly. There was already a depth issue at safety, but with Woods out, an acquisition is now inevitable. I'd be shocked if Ikola isn't signed by the end of this week.

As for Earl Thomas, I feel like he'll eventually be a Cowboy but Seattle has to lower their asking price. The Cowboys just aren't going to give up high draft picks to acquire him.

It is not outside the realm of possibilities that both Ikola and ET are Cowboys by Week 1.

So when you find out IIoka cannot play well enough to make the Dallas secondary better, will you sit back and think, "Well, he's taller, and a bit younger, and weighs more, but mostly the team saved a bunch of money and one draft pick."

I wonder what the age group of the people who continually talk about money in regard to Thomas is.

As Deion said, "Both."

Who knows, but bottom line is someone has to be brought in this week to start learning schemes etc. ET would be the easiest to bring in because he knows our new system better then those currently in camp because he has been in that system for years.

Talent on our team?? Oh wait this is the Cowboys forum, your right perennial probowlers, sorry....

next there's Dlaw's contract and Dak probably.
then Zeek the year after along with BJones who will get a big contract also
probably more.
Id love to have ET I just dont think so

Yeah as much as they say about ET's age, Deion was 28 when we acquired him, ET is just a year older at a position that ages better.

Now Deion is different, IMO the goat in terms of coverage corners, but ET is the best at his position in today's age and could have a pretty long shelf life since he is a FS.

Iloka is average, but average could fill out our rotation back there even if there is no ET.

We do actually need both, but I don't see that happening.....and ET, well Seattle knows our situation now so I just don't see them lowing the price any at all so we either pay them their resources or go after a guy like Iloka. I'd go for both, cause if we want to actually have a chance at winning anything we have to improve one of our big weaknesses.
