Iloka versus Thomas

A 71 score puts Ikola in the realm of league average. It’s not inconceivable we could get both Ikola and Thomas (doubt it but possible)

I say that because there may not be a big market this time of year for strong safety, and it’s possible he’ll be signable for $2 mil or less.

Neither are hybrid players: One is emphatically free safety. One emphatically strong.

Ikola? Well now we have to sign him.

next there's Dlaw's contract and Dak probably.
then Zeek the year after along with BJones who will get a big contract also
probably more.
Id love to have ET I just dont think so
My question is how many wins does he bring to the table?
The very things you mention above are why I don’t want his expensive contract.

As well as I have little faith in him staying healthy and the last thing we need is another guy with injury concerns

I don’t think he’s worth it but hey I’ll root for him if he comes

So when you find out IIoka cannot play well enough to make the Dallas secondary better, will you sit back and think, "Well, he's taller, and a bit younger, and weighs more, but mostly the team saved a bunch of money and one draft pick."

I wonder what the age group of the people who continually talk about money in regard to Thomas is.

As Deion said, "Both."

As Deion brought with him - -

It takes a special kind of football ignorance to make a thread trying to compare Thomas and Iloka

The Cowboys consider Iloka a Strong Safety.

So you’d want Heath playing center field? That terrifies me. Teams will be launching deep ball after deep ball all day.

I can see it now, find the fastest WR put him in the slot where Dallas has questions and even with safety help it’s gonna be an easy completion.

Why? Heath is the fastest player on the defense. He's faster than the CB's on the team.

Sorry but, IIoka can be signed for low money and no draft picks. ET will require a high pick and loads of money which might cost us Lawrence next season. You are right though there is no comparison for whom we should pursue.

This isn't an either/or scenario!

Is Iloka anywhere close to ET? Nope. Is he a solid, durable, legit NFL safety with tons of starting experience? Yep.

Currently, our starting safeties for week 1 will be Jeff Heath and Frazier. Our backups will be two guys that went undrafted and havent played a meaningful snap in the NFL. Sounds awesome!

We have plenty of cap space. I doubt Iloka will cost very much and will be happy with a shorter deal, and in no way would it keep us from continuing to negotiate with Seattle.

Heath runs 4.3 last I looked and he brings the wood which Jones never did. Jones is exactly where he belongs at CB.
Heath can play center field and IIoka could play up.

What does being the wood have to do with the speed debate?

Is his where we start to overrate Jeff Heath again like he’s one of the best safeties in the league?

There's little comparison between the two. ET is a much, much better player.

Iloka is a zone DB who gives you some solid depth at a reasonable cost. Thomas is a game changing defender.

Thomas has been a game changing defender in his past. Now he's a guy who has missed 7 games the last two seasons, been sitting on his couch all summer, and his priority is getting a big contract. What he'll be going forward is unknown, and veteran players who already have a ring aren't always so motivated once they've been paid.

Again, I'm amazed how there are 31 teams yet it's only the Cowboys who could/would possibly trade for him. Not one team has stepped up and given Seattle what they want for him.

He's definitely serviceable IMHO and he can play single high which we seem to be playing more and more. We obviously
disagree on ET as a potential Dallas Cowboy which is fine. Makes for fine conversation, right?

Lol you like his size? Well the guy can’t run! Earl is 10x’s the player of this scrub.

Agreed. I didn't realize Iloka was 28. I thought he was a few years younger than ET, no way, plus George was slated to make 6 mil this year, I doubt he is looking to play for half of that. He is slightly above average and ET is HOFer, you get what you pay for.

Right...but you know what Stephen says....you don't pay up for age or anything else. You also don't give up valuable draft picks for age. Besides all this is moot. Seattle doesn't appear to be shopping him any longer.

- He's not going to get $6MM now. And when you take into account the depressed FA market for safeties this year where guys were just sitting out there in FA, he's not going to get some long term big money deal. More than likely, at this point, he'll get a one year deal from someone looking for S help.

- The aversion to guys that are in their late 20s is frankly bizarre. Oh my god, the guy is 28?

- The reality is this team had a S issue before Woods even pulled up lame. The other reality is that while Thomas is a much better player, it's not as easy to get Thomas because it's a trade. So if this team is trying to plug a hole here, especially in the short term, then guys like Iloka make sense. What doesn't make sense is thinking that Jeff Heath and Kavon Frazier are good enough to man the S position for a team that has aspirations of making the playoffs.
