I know that a lot of people have started the same threads and I apologize for doing the same...
But I wanted to wait a few days and think about this hire, read all the articles I could from all the "experts" and "prognosticators" and "mediots" and, more importantly, from the people here...
After all the emotion has worn off, I think this is a very good hire...
Our defense gave up over 150 points in December...
How in the hell can we gain any momentum when there are long, demoralizing drives occurring during each game?...
The old adage is that you win with defense and a running game...
All indications early on are that Phillips wants to fix the o-line and reestablish an already pretty good running game...
As for the defense, I think his record speaks for itself...
The stars on defense that we've spend so much money and picks on, will only flourish under this system...
Hell, look at what the Chargers players had to say and NOT just about his system and what they're going to miss...
From Gates to the roid-head, they all said he's a players coach, great to be around and they really enjoyed playing for him...
NOW, I'm NOT saying that he's like Dungy and Lovie, but the days of screaming and demoralizing players in public may be over...
Phillips is a "players coach" which MAY be a great fit here...
As for the offense, I like the fact that we're going with Sparano and Garrett...
We need new thinking and possibly different schemes than what we've used...
So, we've addressed a glaring need that is a critical component of winning games and championships and at the same time we're injecting younger and more progressive offensive thinking at the same time...
Finally, even Landry tried to bring Phillips into the fold in the late 80's to insert his 4-6 defense but couldn't guarantee a DC position so he went to Denver...
THAT speaks volumes if Landry was willing to move away from the flex and let Phillips bring in a new scheme...
Looking forward to a new direction and thinking...
