Congratulations, Rusty! Have a great time, and go see the CyberJapan Dancers! They have a YouTube channel, if you want to check them out...Then again, that may not be your thing...but they're still a lot of fun.

I went a couple of years ago. It’s an awesome place, but overwhelming. Take a battery bank, as your phone is your lifeline. Use Google Maps to navigate the subways and buses. If you have an iPhone, get a Suica card on it. Suica is used for the public transportation and most stores accept it for payment.

Good call, I'll get a battery bank.

Also, get some cash from an ATM. Much cheaper than those currency exchange scam places at the airport. They don’t use electronic payments as much as we do, so get at least $50 usd worth in case you need it. You can always get more.

Don’t sleep on Japanese 7/11 stores. The food in there is actually really good. Get some A5 wagyu while you’re there. Super cheap compared to the states.

Did 3 weeks in Japan, 1 week in Tokyo and 2 weeks in Osaka.
Great trip. Amazing food. Language can be challenging at times when you get away from the cities.

Suggestions
Tokyo- get up early and go to the Tsukiji Fish Market. You’ll see things you didn’t know existed. Eat in one of the local places that caters to the market workers. Also a Greta place to buy a sushi knife. Lot’s of blade makers in the area, you don’t need to do a tour you can just walk around, The tuna auction is interesting to watch
Shibuya Crossing just a mass of neon and humanity but fun to walk around

Obviously hit the major temples as well.

Food- you can’t go wrong. If you like sushi maybe do one formal dinner other than that I’d suggest ramen houses and izikayas. These are tiny little hole in the wall places but the food is amazing.
Yakiniku- grill your own meats
Also worth trying okonomiyaki - type of savory pancake, very good
Tako balls- you’ll see street carts selling these. Little deep fried balls of dough with a small piece of octopus in the middle. Sounds odd but very good.

I assume you’re taking the bullet train to Osaka. That’s a cool ride.

While in Osaka take a day trip to Nara, cool town with deer walking all over. Navigating the trains can be challenging outside the cities because everything is in kanji but someone will help you if you get stuck.

A buddy married a Japanese girl and their close friend owns a restaurant in Osaka. I’ll try and get the name. If you are an adventurous eater that is the place, They serve whale, horse etc along with more standard stuff, They have a miso, pork, mushroom dish that’s one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.

Other things worth doing
Onsen- Japanese bathhouse. If you have tattoos you will not be able to go to the mainstream ones you’ll have to do the ones that allow Yakusa,

In Japan you see a guy with tattoos 95% chance they are Yakusa
If you see a license plate with repeating #’s or all the same #. Guy is probably Yakusa.

Another odd thing you’ll see is salarymen getting absolutely annihilated drunk with their coworkers, Some will get so wasted they pass out on the street. Saw one guy passed out with his wallet and keys on his chest and people just let him be.

Any Q’s let me know.

Yeah, I plan to use ATMs while I'm there. I plan to check their 7/11s out. I'm looking forward to the wagyu.

Nara would be amazing!! It'd be fun to see the deer there. I like the food ideas.

That's awesome, man. I've been wanting to go to Japan for ages and still haven't gotten there. I you have a great time. I want to visit one of their maid cafes where women in cutsie outfits serve you and they'll draw pictures with ketchup onto your scrambled eggs. My description may make it sound corny, but you can see videos on Youtube if you're not familiar with this. It's cool.
...
But whatever you decide to do there, have a great time! I'm jealous.

I'm excited. It should be a great time and that sounds like a great place with the scrambled eggs.

Restaurant in Osaka I was going to give you is no longer around.

Odd food I ate
Horse- served raw. Tasted like a horse smells. Not great. Horse meat is pretty common in lots of countries including France.
Whale- raw, blubber and cooked. Blubber was the best, raw was like steak with a fish flavor, cooked it got fishier.
Soft Bone- Japanese are into textures that we are not. Soft bone is cooked chicken cartilage. Not bad.
Had kobe beef that was the best piece of meat I’ve ever had.

Food overall is incredible, Everything is presented really well and they take a huge amount of pride in every piece of a meal. Sushi chefs intern for several years before they can even make the rice let alone cut fish and it shows.
