I'm Not Entirely Ready to Write Off Deuce Vaughn

I flip flop on Deuce Vaughn. When I think about it, he really doesn't have a big enough sample size of carries. I look at some of his runs and I'm like hey, that's an NFL back. On others, it looks like he doesn't belong in the league.

I realize he's small, or short rather. But he is shifty and elusive when he has the blocking and I think we'll have better blocking this year.

He also has his former offensive line coach from Kansas, so he knows how to scheme Deuce.

We also have Booker, Beebe, and Smith in the middle.

Deuce is a good runner. And he's had two years in the league to get stronger and better.

This game against the Raiders I think it was, they were still playing their starters and we had our backup OL in the game.

He averaged over 6 YPC in this game on 6 carries.

Could he duplicate that in the regular season? I think possibly.

In my view, his biggest hurdle is pass blocking, which we can only hope he's working on.

I'm not saying he doesn't have an uphill battle. But I do think it's possible he surprises us all. I'm not saying anything is guaranteed for him. But he has some things going in his favor.

If he makes the 53, he's a 8-10 carry per game player. We all talk about his poor average YPC. But this game against the Raiders was different.

I expect a lot of flack for trying to see the positive here. But that's really all I'm doing. I'm not completely ready to write him off. Remember, it took Sproles a long time to develop into the player he became.

I wrote him off after the first year. he is not elusive. he is not shifty. he is undersized, with not enough skills to overcome his size. he was a good college player but in the Pros he is way too underskilled to be effective.

lets just move on from this experiment.

I am. Hes a great kid, great story. But he has been here for 2 years and done nothing. We had a huge issue last season at RB and he still couldnt play. His time here is over. I would be my house he does not make this team out of camp.

I’ve pointed out in other threads that with Turpin possibly facing a suspension he could be used to replace him as a returner. When Turpin was dinged a few times he replaced him. He’s had four punt returns.

Considering what we've done (or haven't done) at the RB position, I'm not counting out anyone.

Williams is a 3.7-YPC starter until he proves otherwise.

Sanders is a 3.7-YPC starter until he proves otherwise.

Blue is a fifth-round value. Mafah is a seventh-round value. And Vaughn is a sixth-round value.

I can't see a reason to dismiss Vaughn with that competition except for what he's done up to now, which is not much.

That’s not really the right perspective to look at this.

Every team cuts NFL caliber talent in early September. There are guys sitting on the couch at Halloween who could play decent minutes for most teams. So even if Deuce flashes sometimes, why should they settle for that? Think of it from this perspective: you have 4 RBs other than Deuce who are much more highly touted. Would you consider cutting Jaydon Blue for Deuce? Mafah? One of the vets? He’s pretty clearly the odd man out, even if he has something he could give the team.

Deuce has been good enough to make Dallas’ 53 man because they didn’t even have 3 guys better. Now they have 4. I don’t think Blue is getting cut for him.
