Especially with 26 minutes left and playing a team averaging over 30 points per game.

True there was still a lot of game to be played to be thinking about running the clock out. Often when teams do that they only manage to run the clock out on themselfs.

That's exactly right. It has happened over and over where teams have become ultra conservative and lost the edge that got them the lead to begin with, then next thing you know the game is close and all the momentum is with the opponent. A team just can't play scared for 26 minutes.

There was nothing wrong with throwing at the time. The problem was the decision making by the QB. I am all for them still going for the kill at the beginning of the 3rd qtr. Mass Football left.

I remember in the Parcell days, with the other bus driver QB at the helm, and losing games because Dallas would stop attacking after a lead and just try to kill the clock so early in games. They would get stopped, the other team gets momentum and boom, they win.

Good post. A lot of fans tend to forget everything but what happened at a particular moment, throw common sense out the window, and claim after the fact they knew best all along.

The reality is you can't run the ball to wind down almost an entire half of football, and you have to expect your QB to make some decisions because otherwise the team has no hope anyway.

You can if your quarterback has shown a propensity to turn the ball over down the stretch.

A part of coaching is knowing your personnel and your players' strengthens and weaknesses.

I understand what you're saying. You can't play scared. But playing brave doesn't mean passing on 1st and 10 every series.

So with 43% of the game you make the decision that you can't trust the QB and you just hand off the ball over and over? I would agree with you if it were later in the game, but this was not a 4th quarter situation. We had most of the 2nd half to play. You can't just sit on your hands and hope the defense bails you out for 43% of the game.

By the way, we didn't pass every 1st and 10. I counted 6 first downs where we ran in the 2nd half. Even so, if you know that you can't keep the ball on the ground to run out 26 minutes, then the plan has to be to play for an extended drive, which means to mix in the run and pass in whatever way it is deemed best accomplishes that. You don't run out any more clock by running the ball on 1st down than you do by running it on second down.
