I'm thinking a shocker.

I think Jerry might really suprise us with this decision for a few different reasons.

First of all, I like Singletary and think he will be a good Coach for a long time, but I do get scared by the fact that he is not even being given an interview by his current team, for the team's open D-Coordinator job. Instead, guys like Campo are being brough in for interviews, even though Singletary has let it be known he is interested. That tends to make me shy away and I do believe his interview was more to satisfy the rule.

Here is the one that gets me. If Norv Turner is concerned with control, it might be the one thing that makes Jerry shy away from him. I'm all for Turner, but certainly I am not married to any idea, and will support whoever is hired, unlike many others.

What does that leave. It leaves the one guy that everyone has kind of dismissed in the last week. The one guy that certainly will not be in the mix for any player personnel control issues. That's right, Jason Garrett. It all adds up, especially if you add in the fact that Lacewell is coming back, probably to help with some of the personnel issues vacated by Parcells.

The kicker is this. If we hire Phillips or Turner, there is a good chance that Garrett will be hired away from us as early as next season, by someone like the Giants. There would be nothing we could do about it, and who could blame Garrett if he left. The only way we assure that Garrettt is here for the long term, is to make him our HC right now, and skip the Turner/Phillips step.

In a nutshell, the only way Garrett becomes the HC of this team in the near future, is if he is hired as the HC right now. If we wait, he will be gone by this time next year, especially after all the press he is getting about it.

That's why, in the end, I think he names Garrett HC on Monday or Tuesday.

I think its Garrett or Singletary

I think Norv is out. Jerry is not going to let him control personnel nor should he with someone like Norv. He isnt Bill Parcells

We are not exactly rebuilding, so a young and inexperienced coach like Garnett will be a big gamble.

If you want to keep JG at that point you just fire Norv,Wade, etc.

How do you do that if they get to the playoffs? Think Jerry just wants to fire his long time friend after one season of playoff football?

It's simple, Garrett is gone after next year if he is no our HC. The Giants will be calling. Cowher will be in Carolina or Cleveland.

I think you are on to something here. This move would be fine with me. If we think either of these guys can be a head coach bite the bullet and do it. I would rather do this than hire either one of the retreads.

Well just because another team might want him after a year doesnt mean he'd automatically take the job. Not like he'd have to. He might think it's the wrong situation or he might just dream of being the HC here and be willing to wait the extra year or two

But in general, yeah I wouldnt rule out him just getting the job right now. I mentioned that the other day.. the whole point of bringing in all these other guys might be nothing more than to pick their brains as to what they would do as HC. What they think the strengths and weaknesses of our team are and whatnot.

Meanwhile Jerry has been taping all this. Once finished he tells JG to take the tape home and study it. At that point.. "grooming" complete. ;)

But if we return to the playoffs, or even win a playoff game, there will be no end in sight for whoever our HC is (Turner/Phillips). Garrett will not take that chance. He would have no choice but to move on to a HC job.

Either way, a chance Jerry cannot take.

It's up to Garrett to leave or not. It is his choice. He doesn't have to take another job if he feels that he would eventually get the Cowboys HC job.

bingo.

remember payton refused the raiders when he was here.

those are the types of offers garrett would get anytime soon (ones to avoid).

I think all this talk about Norv wanting control of personnel, etc. is just spin that can be used for Norv to save face in the event he doesn't get the job.

Mortenson started it again last night saying things like it might be tough for Norv to move from the West Coast; Norv may not automatically want the job, etc.

That is just saving face talk, imo.

I'm wondering if that was Jerry's plan all along. Have Garrett in his hip pocket while interviewing Wade and Norv. If neither of those truly impress, go with Garrett.

But, during Norv's interview Singletary gets mentioned and then the murmur in Miami about the Rooney deal, Singletary comes in and, as has been reported, really impresses Jerry and now he's stuck. His Coach of the Future has been beaten by Singletary and now Jerry would rather go with Singletary, but that jerks the rug out from under Jason and any commitment Jerry may have made to him.

Again, pure speculation, but not impossible.

this is starting to remind me of 1998 when we hired Chan Gailey. Terry Donahue was CLEARLY the guy, then then was disappointed in the money and limited amount of input he'd have on personnel issues and coaching staff. He said no, then we got stuck with a bottom feeder like Chan Gailey...Gailey was a terrible hire, and though we had some limted success for two seasons (very limted) he ultimately set us back and it led to the dreadful Dave Campo hiring

fast forward to 2007...its appeared since probably the day after Parcells resigned that Norv Turner was really the guy....now we're hearing some chatter of disagreement over control and personnel issues, much like 1998.

I hope we dont regret not pulling the trigger on Norv Turner the way we regretted not getting Terry Donahue (who I think would have been a solid hire in 1998)...I'm not saying no matter who we hire other than Norv will be bad, but we'd be taking MAJOR chances with someone like Garrett or Singletary...and this team isnt in a rebuilding mode...we should be ready to make a real run next yr if the team stays healthy

We definitely just find ourselves facing the lesser of 2 evils.

To bring in Norv or Wade mostly just cause of their "leadership" compared to Garrett or Singletary, when nobody else would give those "old timers" a look as HC cant be terribly comforting. Nor can it be terribly comforting to give the young guns the nod when you dont have the "old timers" backing them up in coordinator roles doing what they do best in the first place.
