Me thinks the refs will be keeping a very close eye on all plays in an effort to save face from the media scrutiny that has become as a result of last week.
What do you all think? Are we in store for a few ticky-tacky calls?
I'm sure Roger has put the bug in some zebra ears.
You should be...you should be...but what, in the end can you actually do about it? *wink
Dallas will win if:
D-line can ante up, including RoMac in the lineup at LB.
Team rushing 150 yards plus.
Turnover battle is won.
Cowboys can beat man coverage consistently.
Oline keeps Romo clean.
Do those five things with consistency and the Cowboys will move to 9-0 on the road.
Dallas will lose if:
Slow start like Detroit game.
Can't at least move a less mobile Rodgers off his spot.
Lose the turnover battle.
Can't run the Packers out of nickel.
Oline breaks down.
Can't beat man coverage.
The first 30 minutes will be the most important, since Marinelli's d-line usually gets stronger toward the end due to an excellent rotation, where players are kept fresh. The Dallas defense has usually played better over the final 30 minutes in most games where they have come from behind. If Dallas can enter half-time, tied, ahead or just 3 points down, then they will have better chances. I think Bryant had a good day in last year's game (11 for 153yds). Burnett and Shields had a long day after a 26-3 start by Dallas. The defense just could not hold up. The key matchup might be Nelson vs. Scandrick...hopefully he can do better than last year. I do think that if Dallas opens up again with a 26-3 lead, then Green Bay probably can't win. Moreover, if Dallas can get 150 from both Murray
and Bryant, then it could turn into a real barn-burner like the Denver "affair" last year.
One of the biggest plays from last year's contest was the 2nd and 6 with 2:38 to go in the 4th, where Romo checks out of the run because he sees Green Bay crowding the box, with no safety deeper than 7 yards from the LOS. I don't know if it was Murray not picking up Matthews but ... Tyron and the line blocks right, with Matthews untouched and in Romo's face immediately...pirouette to shed Matthews, strike to Austin but picked by Sam Shields...if not, Austin is behind both safeties and the game is over...even so, run on 2nd 6 with 2:38 was probably a better move, especially how Murray had been running up to that point (18-134 @ 7.44 YPC). Probably a really bad move on Romo's part to check out of the run without accounting for Matthews, unless Murray just missed it.
The biggest thing was blowing a 26-3 first half advantage...with plenty of chances to salt away the game. Selvie and Scandrick got one sack each, but the defensive secondary simply collapsed in the final thirty minutes. Dallas must hope that the d-line can get pressure, even if not sacks, because the GB line is better than last year. Spencer and Lawrence are two key players that could make a difference in the second half.
