Remember that year in game four for us, the Eagles killed us 31-10.

Imagine if this board had existed back then. These would have been some of the comments made by various posters;

1) Fire Johnson and bring back Landry. What has Johnson gotten us in three and a quarter seasons? One measly playoff appearance. We were sold a bill of goods in the preseason, we suck.

2) Talk about an overrated defence. The Eagles exposed us big time.

3) Get rid of Aikman. He has thrown more INTs than TDs in his career to date, we made the playoffs last year AFTER he was injured.

4) We are so far behind the 49ers, Eagles and Bills it is pitiful, 9-7 here we come.

No, we improved every year after JJ took over. We didn't waste time floundering around with geriatric QB's. We started a young guy and let him take his lumps until it paid big dividends in 92. JJ put youth on both offense annd defense. When they grew up we were the best. BP has done a good job of building a good young defense, I give him an A-. However on offense he has done a terrible job of rebuilding I give him a D+. I would have to give JJ an A+ on both sides of the ball.

sorry, but there is no comparison between that team (even at the time of the Philyl loss) and this team

none of the 4 things you posted even warrant much of a response

The score was 31-7 Eagles. Your points are extremely valid. Great post.

I honestly thought it was totally off

Aikman and Bledsoe? Please

Jimmy and Parcells? "what had Johnson got us in 3+ seasons"...well he got us from abysmal at 1-15, to near playoffs in 1990 at 7-9, to playoffs AND a road playoff win in 1991 to dominant, overwhelming team in 1992...whats parcells dont other than prove he can be mediocre?

that loss and the one we just had?

also was no comparison between the results of that defense and this years, so far

You are missing the point completely. It has nothing to do with comparing the teams (although your view of the 1992 team is based on what it did the rest of the season, not what it did up to that point), but on the likely reaction of posters here.

You are assuming they would have been rational in 1992, I say they would have been no different.

Nope you are completely wrong on this one my friend. Even though this board wasn't around back then I never felt then the way I do now about this team.

We hadn't done anything up to that point in the last several years but it was obvious that we were improving. It was also obvious that we had a ton of talent and that we would be better. We had a young QB who made some mistakes but he would get better. We also had a coaching staff that was excellent on game day.

This year we also have a ton of talent but that same feeling of hope isn't there for a number of reasons. Our coaching staff is terrible on game day. We have an older QB making dumb rookie mistakes who won't ever get better. The expectations for this team are much higher than they were back in 1992. Back then we were just excited not to be losing more than we were winning.

I knew dozens of Cowboys fans back then and none of us were clamouring for Jimmy to be fired, Troy to be benched, or any of the other stuff we hear and say today.

Your comparison just doesn't hold in this case.

Good points Thumper.

Fans can live with young QB mistakes or blame the OL. Perfect example is David Carr, or even Vick.

When your veteran QB who has done this and that over the years, comes in and makes rookie mistakes there is a problem. When Oakland got Jerry Rice the offense didnt miss a beat. BTW - Oakland didnt play the WCO.

CCF,
I see what you are saying about a message board reaction and how many would be. Certainly you would likely be correct in that assumption (IMO).

If I take your post and Thumpers and come to a conclusion...

There are now and always have been Chicken Littles and apologists.

This is a great thread. And I can't believe some of the revisionist history going on here.

These teams and this situation absolutely compares/applies.

Let me first say that I was very confident following that loss. I thought we moved the ball well against them for the first time. Just to many turnovers.

But it was a 31-7 loss. That team had been humiliated the previous year in the playoffs by Detroit. There was still plenty of questions about this college coach with his tiny speedy college defense. And his QB who never seemed to produce in the clutch and had never beaten the Eagles. In fact he'd never made it through a whole season. He was just too immobile and too injury prone, sound familar?

I hoped against hope that we would find a way to avoid the turnovers against them and win the rematch.
I wasn't nearly as confident then as I am now that we will win this rematch in Dec and the NFC East.

You guys are nuts. Of course it's easy to like that team better than this one with the benefit of hindsight. Let's all hope that with the benefit of hindsight in Feb 2007 we love this team just as much!

Hindsight is 20/20. I recall that the 1992 team did have high hopes entering the season, and were viewed as a legit contender well before preseason started that year.

I also recall that the media and fans were skeptical of that 1992 team after the huge loss to the Eagles. Some even clamored for Beurlein to replace Aikman, as he had a big hand in the prior year's success.

My how quickly we forget that the 1992 team had lots of question marks on defense, and got exposed on MNF while playing the Eagles. After all, the 1991 defense was horrible.

The Eagles played their Super Bowl that night in 1992. They did make the playoffs that year, but clearly did not rise to the occasion when they played other teams.

My point is that we had lots of doubt after that loss early in 1992. In some ways, we are at the same crossroads.

I do believe that this team will bounce back, just like the 1992 team, but we may not hoist the Lombardi trophy this year.

Since when did the Raiders not run a WCO? That's what Gruden runs.

Although I was all of nine years old in 1992 I do recollect that Dallas was favored to finish third in the division and maybe even miss the playoffs behind the defending champion Commanders and the division favored eagles. After Dallas embarassed Washington on opening night the stage was set for two 3-0 teams, Cowboys and Eagles to square off on a Monday night. One of the big story lines was the re-birth of the Eagles running game and how Herschel Walker would seek revenge against the team that had traded him away. Dallas blew it in front of a national audience. Philly started 4-0, Dallas fell to 3-1 but by midseason Dallas sported the best record in football at 7-1 while Philly dropp 3 of their next 4 to finish 11-5 by seasons end and second place behind the upstart Cowboys who displayed a 13-3 division crown. Interesting tidbit, that season dallas finished with the most potent ground attack in the league and Philly with Walker had the number two attack in the NFL, in the playoffs Dallas avenged the early season defeat desicively and heald the vaunted Eagle runner to 59 yards on the ground, Emmitt Smith tore gapping holes in the number one rush defense in football and all was forgiven for the early season stomach ulcer.

we also whipped there butt in the regular season at home that year.

That playoff game that year was the year andre watters was talking all kinds of trash and saying that he was going to hurt emmit etc....I remember my aunt telling me that they had taken all the philly cream cheese off the shelves of the grocery stores leading up to that week!!

Watters was injured and never played and he was running around with a psalm 70 sticker on his head. We absolutely took them apart that game. they couldnt even move the ball on us.

You guys kill me. You want to talk about REVISIONIST history?

1. Troy Aikman made the PRO BOWL IN 1991, that is the YEAR BEFORE.

2. As others have pointed out, this team had already turned the corner the year before and was constantly improving. I was actually WATCHING 1992, were you? If you were, then if you were like me, there was nothing at work in me except looking forward to the next game and knowing we were gonna eventually get over that Philly bump in the road. Having reread your post, I guess you were doubtful we ever would. But that's you.

3. Aikman (I don't know how many times this has to be said) was NOT immobile in 1992. Man, just watch the Super Bowl video if you want evidence of that because he pulls off 2 or 3 good runs. (3 carries 28 yards, 19 was his longest, and he had one nice run after a fumbled snap.) In 1989 he ran for 302 yards, in 1990 he ran for 172 yards on 40 carries. AIKMAN STOPPED RUNNING WHEN HE LEARNED TO READ DEFENSES AND HAD SOME DECENT PROTECTION.

Aikman lost his mobility when his back problems worsened, but it wasn't as early as 1992.

No matter how hard anyone tries, you can't make Aikman Bledsoe, and you can't make 2006, 1992.
